  News Around the Minors (10/19/06)

An Ohio paper has an article on Grafton product Ryan Feierabend and his encounter with his childhood idol, Jim Thome, late in the Mariners' season.

The Victoria Times Colonist has a feature on the recent successes of Canadian baseball that no one seems to be paying attention to, with the national team qualifying for the Beijing Olympics, earning a Bronze back in the '04 games, and recently earning the same distinction with its youth team in the junior baseball championships. There's a little comment on Mike Saunders at the end there. I think the M's have done a decent job keeping Canada on their radar (even if it may be one-sided), and it's too early to talk much about DFEs, but I am a little interested in OF Tyson Gillies.

Not really "news", but I recently noticed on the Aquasox site that the same group owns the Lancaster Jethawks, which makes the M's move to High Desert all the more surprising. Perhaps the Jethawks just decided they liked the Red Sox affiliation better.

Finally, fans of winter baseball (of which there are, hey, four or five of you out there?) can rejoice, as there's going to be one more league joining the fold soon, to which I say: it's about time. The Australian Baseball League looks like it will be open for business in November of next year, fielding six teams initially. Major league teams will be able to affiliate with the new teams and send prospects and players as they see fit. With the world of Australian baseball scouting growing by the year, it only makes sense.

  M's Announce Minor League Awards

Usually, we'd have to wait about a month for these to come out, but while doing my news search, I came across the article right here. Not sure exactly how they got it, as this is my first experience with the site, but it seems to have a variety of sources already and the information appears to be about what I'd consider right.

To get to the content itself, the M's have named 1B Bryan Lahair their minor league player of the year and RHP Mark Lowe as their pitcher of the year. The rest of the list goes as follows:
Level Team Player Pitcher
AAA Tacoma OF Adam Jones RH Cha Seung Baek
AA San Antonio OF Wladimir Balentien LH Ryan Feierabend
A Inland Empire INF Tyler Eastley RH Jose De La Cruz
A Wisconsin INF Ron Garth RH Nick Allen
Short-A Everett INF Manelik Pimentel RH Doug Fister
Rookie Peoria INF Gerardo Avila RH Douglas Salinas
Dominican INF Luis Nunez LH Eddy Fernandez
Venezuelan INF Edilio Colina RH Juan Carlos Ramirez
Yeah, Reed is just his middle name while Tyler is his first name.

There's nothing much out of the ordinary in these listings. I would've made a case for Halman or Joe White in Everett, but Pimentel was a regular producer for the Sox and was noted for his contributions to the community (bonus points). I'd also like to throw some kudos Tony Butler's way, but Salinas and Fister aren't bad choices by any means.

Congratulations to all!

Mike Wilson: AFL Player of the Week

Saw that coming.

Sure, it's only the first week of play, and a short one at that, but grand slams in consecutive games is a pretty big deal.

In the AFL today, the league's best offense in the Javelinas met up with the league's best pitching staff in the Mesa Solar Sox, and being the AFL, the former came up on top by seven.

It's worth noting for two reasons: Tui had a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in two, and KAAAAAHN made his first appearance in the sixth, striking out one.

  Winter League Stats (10/15/06)

I have to admit, after that Hawks game I'm still trying to get my bearings straight. I only tuned in for the fourth quarter, but I think that one had enough action to make up for what I missed...

(and Fox is using The Rat by The Walkmen for their playoff commercials...)

Anyway, this is the first update of the winter league stats. As such, some of these stats are even less meaningful than usual.
Edit: 7:03 pm PDT, more goodies below...

Arizona Fall League
2B Michael Garciaparra: 3 G, 13 ABs, 4 R, 4 H, 3 RBI, 4/0 K/BB, .308/.357/.308
RHP Craig James: 1 G, 0-0, 27.00 ERA in 0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R (2 ER), 0/2 K/BB
LHP Bobby Livingston: 1 G (1 GS), 0-0, 27.00 ERA in 2.1 IP, 8 H, 7 R (7 ER), 1/0 K/BB, HB
LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith: 2 G, 0-0, 2.25 ERA in 4.0 IP, H, R (ER), 5/1 K/BB
3B Matt Tuiasosopo: 4 G, 17 ABs, 4 R, 2 H, 3B, 2 RBI, 3/2 K/BB, .118/.211/.235
OF Mike Wilson: 4 G, 17 ABs, 5 R, 5 H, 2B, 2 HR (grand slams in consecutive games), 11 RBI (leads league), 5/2 K/BB, .294/.350/.706

Hawaiian Winter League
(which started before the Fall League, you know...)
LHP David Asher: 3 G (3 GS), 0-1, 8.38 ERA in 9.2 IP, 15 H (HR), 10 R (9 ER), 7/7 K/BB, HB
OF Sebastien Boucher: 6 G, 19 ABs, 2 R, 2 H, RBI, 5/2 K/BB, CS, .105/.190/.105
C Jeff Clement: 4 G, 10 ABs, 2 H, R, 2/0 K/BB, HBP, .200/.273/.200
1B Reed Eastley: 6 G, 19 ABs, R, 3 H, RBI, 6/2 K/BB, HBP, .158/.273/.158
RHP Joe Woerman: 4 G, 0-0, 1.42 ERA in 6.1 IP, 7 H, R (ER), 7/2 K/BB, WP

I'll add the VWL next week. There's only two games in the statbooks on the Cardenales site right now and the LVBP main site has nothing at the moment.

What we do have now, is Rich Dorman's journal as posted via the Tacoma Rainiers site, which includes an e-mail you can use to ask him questions.
