Colorado Springs 2 (COL) Tacoma 5
RHP Rafael Soriano (3.00) went the first two innings, giving up a solo shot and striking out two. How’s this for crazy, LHP Craig Anderson (6.19, W) has now won consecutive appearances? Anderson went four and two-thirds innings, giving up a run on four hits and five walks against four strikeouts. LHP Randy Williams (3.28, S) would pick up the save in two and a third innings after giving up a hit, a wild pitch, and three walks while striking out three. CF Jeremy Reed (2B, 3B, 2 R, SB, .288) notched three hits, while SS Jose Lopez (HR, 3 RBI, .295) and DH Greg Jacobs (HR, .291) had some welcome power shots. In a scary note, 3B Greg Dobbs (SB, .286) took another walk, but it was intentional, so eh. Anderson winning… Dobbs taking a walk… what’s next? The M’s getting something great out of a deadline deal? RHP Gustavo Martinez tomorrow.

San Antonio 6, Round Rock 9 (HOU)
RHP Chris Buglovsky (3.52) got through three and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on five hits, a wild pitch, and six walks. LHP Jared Thomas (3.65) went the next three innings, and gave up three runs on three hits and four walks against a couple of strikeouts. One of those runs scored under the watch of LHP Tim Rall (4.62), who gave up another run of his own on two hits (HR), though he struck out three. RF Shin-Soo Choo (HR, 2 R, RBI, .306), SS Michael Morse (2B, 2 RBI, .287), and C Luis Oliveros (R, .238) seemed to get some good mileage out of their two hits apiece, but LF Jaime Bubela (2B, RBI, SB, .231) also doubled and DH T.J. Bohn (.295) singled and walked twice. RHP Juan Done tomorrow.

Stockton 3 (TEX), Inland Empire 2
LHP Bobby Livingston (3.61) was near his vintage levels, going eight innings and giving up two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out eight. LHP Melvin Pizarro (2.77, L) would allow an unearned run over the final two on two hits and a walk with a strikeout. RF Josh Ellison (2B, R, E, .424) and 1B Matt Rogelstad (R, RBI, .241) both had three hits each, and CF Gary Harris (SB, .265) had two, but that was pretty much it. RHP Greg Wear tomorrow.

Wisconsin 3, Battle Creek 1 (NYY)
RHP Brandon Moorhead (3.49, W) was pretty stellar in his six and a third innings, giving up just one unearned run on five hits, a hit batter, a balk, and two walks against four strikeouts. RHP Bryan Stitt (4.65) went the next inning and two-thirds, giving up three hits and striking out two, then RHP Mike Hrynio (4.27, S) went the ninth, giving up a hit and striking out the side. 1B Bryan Lahair (RBI, .325) had two hits, and 2B Michael Cox (2B, R, .237) had the only extra-base hit for the Rattlers, but perhaps most impressive was DH Josh Womack (SB, .263), who went 1-2 with three walks. LHP Thom Oldham tomorrow.

Everett 8, Boise 9 (CHC)
LHP Kendall Bergdall (5.80) was shaky yet again, giving up four earned runs on six hits, a balk, and three walks with three strikeouts in five innings. The loss, however, went to the usually solid RHP Mumba Rivera (3.12, L), who gave up three earned runs on four hits (HR) with a strikeout in his three and two-thirds innings. From the offense’s end of things, SS Oswaldo Navarro (2 2B, R, RBI, SB, .264), 2B Yung-Chi Chen (R, SB, E, .307), RF Mike Wilson (2B, R, RBI, SB, .276), and C Brian Schweiger (2B, 2 RBI, .314) had two hits each. 1B Brandon Green (2B, R, RBI, E, .282) and 3B Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, R, RBI, E, .282) had near identical performances on the field and in the box. RHP Jason Snyder tomorrow.

Peoria Mariners 3, Arizona Royals 9
Yesterday’s game first. LHP Robert Fagan (3.82, L) started and went four innings, giving up four earned runs on nine hits, a wild pitch, and a walk while punching out four. RHP Stephen Grasley (5.28) went the next three, giving up a run on four hits while striking out three. LHP Adam Brandt (4.91) gave up an unearned run on a hit in the ninth, but there was nothing else of note in his inning. C Chao Kuan Wu (2B, 2 RBI, .316) had a couple of hits, with 3B Pedro Ozoria (2B, .250) and SS Matt Tuiasosopo (3B, R, .431) doing their thing so far as the extra-basers went.

Scottsdale Giants 7, Peoria Mariners 4
RHP Eric Carter (4.05, L) went the first six innings and gave up two earned runs on three hits, a wild pitch, and three walks against a couple of strikeouts. RHP Roman Martinez (7.56) went the next two, giving up an earned run on six hits with three batters rung up. RHP Craig James (0.00) walked a batter in the ninth. No extra-base hits on the night, but DH Francisco Gerez (.363) and SS Matt Tuiasosopo (SB, .439) both had two hits, which should come as a surprise to no one.

Tacoma Rainiers: 57-47, .548, 1st in PCL North
San Antonio Missions: 51-57, (20-16, 2nd half) .472 (.556), 1st in TL West

Colorado Springs 5 (COL), Tacoma 4
One can’t really expect to win a game in which your team commits five errors. RHP Cha Seung Baek (3.93, E, L) started this one and went six and a third innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits, a hit batter, a walk and six strikeouts. LHP Tim Christman (44.3) went for the next five outs, and then RHP Jared Hoerman (6.00) pitched the ninth and rung up a batter. The only thing really worth noting was 1B A.J. Zapp (HR, 2 E, .294) hitting his twentieth bomb, becoming the third Rainier to hit twenty or more, though LF Jamal Strong (R, RBI, .324) was 1-2 with three walks. LHP Craig Anderson tomorrow.

San Antonio 4, Round Rock 0 (HOU)
RHP Rich Dorman (3.91, W) had a stellar start, going five innings and giving up four hits and a wild pitch, walking two, and striking out seven. LHP Chris Key (4.40, E) followed that act with three innings of one-hit ball where he struck out three. RHP Aaron Taylor (3.10) had an uneventful ninth, but it would be nice to see if he can help out in Seattle soon. 3B Hunter Brown (2B, 2 RBI, E, .293) had a couple of hits, and SS Michael Morse (2B, R, .278) contributed yet another double. RHP Chris Buglovsky tomorrow.

High Desert 3 (MIL), Inland Empire 4
RHP T.A. Fulmer (4.95) gave the Sixers a good start, going seven innings and allowing one earned run on nine hits and a wild pitch as he struck out four. LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.59) would pick up the win over the final two innings where he punched out three. 2B Juan Gonzalez (R, RBI, .302) contributed another two hits, while CF Gary Harris (3B, 2 R, CS, .264) and SS Michael Garciaparra (2B, R, 2 E, .210) had some flashes of power. LHP Bobby Livingston tomorrow.

Wisconsin 3, Battle Creek 8 (NYY)
LHP Ryan Feierabend (4.10, L) was just bad, giving up seven runs on eleven hits (4 HR!!!), two wild pitches, and a walk against just two strikeouts over five and a third innings. RHP Austin Bilke (7.71) would give up another run on four hits in his inning and a third before giving the ball to LHP Casey Abrams (9.68), who struck out two batters of his four outs. RF Chris Colton (RBI, .254) had three hits, 3B Eric Blakeley (.304) and SS Adam Jones (3B, R, RBI, .265) had two, and 1B Bryan Lahair (2B, R, RBI, .319) doubled. All of this, however, was overshadowed by former M’s prospect LF Jason Van Meetren thrashing one of his former teams with four hits, including a home run. RHP Brandon Moorhead tomorrow.

Everettoise 8 (CHC) (seventeen innings)
Yuck… RHP Aaron Jensen (4.70) started this one and went five innings, giving up four runs on nine hits (HR) against four strikeouts. RHP Terry Forbes (3.60) went next and gave up a run on a hit, a wild pitch, and two walks with three strikeouts in his three innings. LHP Brandon Perry (6.87) somehow went the next three innings and got through them unscathed, giving up two hits, three walks, and striking out three, while RHP Cibney Bello (5.91) was even more impressive in his three, giving up two hits and striking out six. Who would have thought then, that it would be RHP Aaron Trolia (6.94, L) who would give up three runs on three hits (HR), two walks, and strikeout over the next inning and a third to get the loss? Well, he has been a bit off lately. 1B Brandon Green (3B, 2 RBI, CS, .283) had three hits and a couple of walks on the night, while CF Brent Johnson (2 R, RBI, .325), DH Mike Wilson (2 RBI, SB, .265), 2B Oswaldo Navarro (R, .254), and RF Trevor Heid (2B, 2 R, .241) all had two hits. LHP Kendall Bergdall hopes to go deep into the game tomorrow.

There’s no Peoria box tonight. Apparently, the game wasn’t reported to either of my usual sources, but if I track it down tomorrow, I’ll update.

As for the VSL, Tuesday was rained out, and they didn’t play on Wednesday, so that’s why there haven’t been any updates.

Tacoma Rainiers: 56-47, .544, 1st in PCL North
San Antonio Missions: 51-56, (20-15, 2nd half) .477 (.571), 1st in TL West
Inland Empire 66ers: 56-46 (18-16), .549 (.529), 3.5 GB CAL South

Colorado Springs 4 (COL), Tacoma 9
This game saw the brief reappearance of RHP Rafael Soriano (0.00), who pitched one inning and struck out two. After that, the regular starter, LHP Matt Thornton (5.42, W), took over and went seven good innings allowing three earned runs on six hits, a wild pitch, and three walks against nine strikeouts. RHP Scott Atchison (4.15) pitched the ninth and struck out a batter. The offense went on a power trip tonight with 2B Luis Ugueto (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, SB, .254), CF Jeremy Reed (HR, 2 SB, CS, E, .284), 3B Greg Dobbs (HR, 2 RBI, .287), DH Greg Jacobs (HR, .289), and C Brian Moon (HR, .232) all hitting bombs of some sort, those last three coming consecutively, which is odd to see Mariners' team do. LF Jamal Strong (2B, 2 RBI, 2 SB, CS, .322) also picked up three hits. RHP Cha Seung Baek tomorrow.

San Antonio 8, Round Rock 3 (HOU)
RHP Felix Hernandez (4.05, W) started this one out and fared much better than last time, going six innings and allowing a run on four hits, a balk, and two walks with five strikeouts. Speaking of Felix, there’s a PI article out on him right now that’s just excellent, though the comments at the end about his work ethic do have me raising a few questions, most of which are just countered by his competitive nature. RHP Renee Cortez (4.89, E) went the next two innings and gave up an earned run on three hits (HR) against three strikeouts. RHP Rick Guttormson (3.88) went the ninth, giving up a hit and a walk. More bombs from the Missions’ offense as 3B Hunter Brown (3B, 2 HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, .290) had a couple and CF T.J. Bohn (HR, .293) had one. RF Shin-Soo Choo (R, RBI, SB, .308) and 1B John Lindsey (R, .299) also had a couple of hits, while SS Michael Morse (2B, R, 2 RBI, .277) had his seventh double since joining the Missions. RHP Rich Dorman tomorrow.

High Desert 6 (MIL), Inland Empire 5
RHP Juan Sandoval (4.01, L) didn’t pitch as bad as the raw numbers indicate, going seven innings and giving up two earned runs on eight hits and two walks against seven strikeouts. LHP Michael Ciccotelli (9.00) didn’t exactly receive a warm welcome to the league, as he allowed two earned runs to score on four hits over the final two innings while striking out one. With the bats, DH Josh Ellison (2B, RBI, .400) had three hits and 3B Jesus Guzman (RBI, E, .305), RF Carlos Arroyo (2 R, .319), and 1B Matt Hagen (R, .217) notched two each. RHP T.A. Fulmer tomorrow.

I goofed, no Midwest League action tonight.

Tri City 3 (COL), Everett 9
LHP Shawn Nottingham (1.63, W) continues to be absolutely brutal on the Northwest League, going seven innings and allowing just one run on seven hits (HR), a hit batter, and two walks with six strikeouts. RHP Cibney Bello (5.68) got through the eighth with just a hit and a walk, but RHP Aaron Trolia (5.23) didn’t have the same luck in the ninth, giving up two runs on three hits (HR) with a strikeout. LF Casey Craig (HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, CS, .306/.461/.449) and CF Mike Wilson (HR, 2 RBI, .264) continued the home run trend, while 3B Brent Johnson (2B, 2 RBI, .327) had three hits and SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, .298) had a double. As long as I have your attention on this one, I’ll take this time to note that the Aquasox have nine Northwest League All-Stars, LHP Shawn Nottingham, RHP Aaron Jensen, RHP Mumba Rivera, C Omar Falcon, CF/3B Brent Johnson, IF Oswaldo Navarro, IF Asdrubal Cabrera, IF Brandon Green, and IF Yung-Chi Chen, in other words, the entire infield minus Hubbard. Nottingham won’t pitch due to a scheduled start coming up, Cabrera won’t play due to the fact that he’s recovering from back issues, and Chen could be in Athens by then, but every other guy will be there. Speaking of Jensen, he pitches tomorrow.

Mesa Cubs 10, Peoria Mariners 3
The box score says “Loerman”, but I’m just going to do the logical thing and say that it was RHP Joe Woerman (6.00, L) who started this one. Loerman might better reflect his performance though, as he gave up two earned runs on six hits, two wild pitches, and two walks against three strikeouts over three innings. RHP Oliver Arias (7.71) went next in his first relief appearance and went two and a third innings and gave up five runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts. RHP Donald Clement (4.70) may be responsible for some of those, as he allowed two hits, a walk, and a strikeout to score one of his own over the next two outs. RHP Tim Dorn (7.88) had his best performance yet, going two innings, walking one, and striking out two, but then RHP Ryan Leaist (9.00) gave up a solo home run while ringing up a batter in the final inning. LF John-Austin Emmons (2B, RBI, SB, .355) continues to hit with another three today and looks like a hell of a signing to get out of a tryout camp. The same could be said so far as draft-and-follows go for C Danny Santin (2B, 2 R, .360), who had another two hits. DH Matt Tuiasosopo (2B, .423) also had his fifth double, but he’ll need to keep on hitting if he wants to keep his average above .400. I’m assuming that with Arias going today, that LHP Robert Fagan should start tomorrow.

I’ve fixed some things on the sidebar, adding the link to the Peoria stats and a new link, Mariners Intel, which serves the same basic purpose as Dead Reckoning used to, except this guy’s moniker is a wee bit more disturbing. There’s also some additional contact info, instant messenger, in the highly unlikely event that I’m online, as Joe Kaiser can attest to.

Tacoma Rainiers: 56-46, .549, 1st in PCL North
San Antonio Missions: 50-56, (19-15, 2nd half) .472 (.559), 1st in TL West

News Around The Minors...

Not a lot of content this time around, but there are a few things that seem to be worth noting...

The Seattle Times has put together an article on the Tacoma Rainiers and their relationship with the M's. Of course, beneath all this is the underlying possibility that the Rainiers may be moving to Portland, due to better facilities in general, among other things.

Ask BA has comments on how Tuiasosopo's $2.1 million bonus was the largest for a third-round pick in history, plus a few comments on the Olympic rosters for The Netherlands and Italy. I notified Callis about Balentien being on the roster, but Callis picked up that former M's prospect Harvey Monte has also been selected to the team. I had been wondering what happened to him.

Meanwhile, I have a new VSL rundown up at ITP. I think it might help if I made it more of a regular feature next year, because there are a number of players I wanted to comment on, but don't think I will be able to due to the approaching end of their season.

Colorado Springs 1 (COL), Tacoma 8
Here’s your headline: RHP Clint Nageotte (4.46, W) dueled LHP Jeff Francis and won. Nags one-hit the Sky Sox over seven innings with three walks and two strikeouts and in his past three starts, he’s had an ERA of 2.21. LHP Randy Williams (3.42) went the next inning, giving up a hit, walking two, and ringing up one, then RHP Jeff Harris (5.95) allowed the only run in the ninth on two hits (HR). LF Luis Ugueto (SB, .251), SS Jose Lopez (2 R, RBI, SB, .291), and RF Greg Jacobs (2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .290) all had two hits, with 2B Mickey Lopez (2B, .278) and 1B A.J. Zapp (2B, 3 RBI, .294) showing a little power. LHP Matt Thornton tomorrow.

San Antonio 0, Round Rock 6 (HOU)
Quite the opposite of Tacoma’s game. LHP Phil Devey (3.91, E, L) had a pretty awful start, giving up five runs on seven hits (2 HR!), two hit batters, a wild pitch, and two walks against five strikeouts over three and two-thirds innings. RHP Emiliano Fruto (6.20), again horribly inconsistent, went the two and a third innings and allowed a run on three hits, a wild pitch, and two walks with two punchouts. The last two innings were split between RHP Aaron Taylor (3.26) and LHP Tim Rall (4.56). Taylor gave up a hit and a walk, while Rall walked two and struck out the side. Pretty much the only offense from the Missions’ end was 1B John Lindsey (2B, .296) going two-for. RHP Felix Hernandez tomorrow!

High Desert 2 (MIL), Inland Empire 7
LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (3.65) started this one, but only went two innings before being pulled, giving up an unearned run on four hits. Rowland-Smith was pulled due to an injured knee, no word on how, and may join LHP Troy Cate on the DL, which may end his opportunity to help out Australia in the Olympics. The recent savior of the bullpen (aside from Jimenez), RHP Darwin Soto (4.00, W) went the next five innings, holding the Mavericks to two hits, a hit batter, and a walk while striking out six. RHP Mike Steele (9.31) gave up the only earned run of the game for the Sixers on two hits, and then LHP Melvin Pizarro (2.88) went the ninth, giving up two hits and punching out two. LF Jon Nelson (2 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, .309) led the offense with four hits, while SS Juan Gonzalez (R, SB, .303), C Brian Lentz (.263), and SS Michael Garciaparra (2B, R, RBI, .205) logged two apiece, Garciaparra finally crossing the Mendoza line. CF Gary Harris (HR, 2 R, .264), 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, .302), and DH Erick Monzon (2B, SB, .279) showed some additional power. RHP Juan Sandoval tomorrow.

Beloit 4 (MIL), Wisconsin 5
RHP Nibaldo Acosta (3.98) went the first seven innings and allowed three earned on six hits and a hit batter with four strikeouts. In his Wisconsin debut, RHP Chad Fillinger (0.00, W) struck out two over the last two innings to earn the win. LF Wladimir Balentien (2B, R, CS, .281) had the only two-hit night for the offense, but SS Adam Jones (2B, R, 2 RBI, .263) also did his part. LHP Ryan Feierabend tomorrow.

Tri City 5 (COL), Everett 3
RHP Ruben Flores (4.71, L) went five innings and gave up four runs on four hits (2 HR) and three walks against two strikeouts. The next two innings went to RHP Phil Cullen (2.45), who gave up a run on three hits (HR), three walks, and three strikeouts. LHP Vance Hall (7.11) had an uneventful final two innings. CF Brent Johnson (HR, .315) had his first homer of the season and two other hits, and DH Mike Wilson (HR, .264) had another home run as well. LHP Shawn Nottingham tomorrow.

Phoenix Athletics 4, Peoria Mariners 5
RHP Jon Lockwood (9.00) went five innings in his start, giving up two runs on one hit, a wild pitch, and five walks against six strikeouts. RHP Tyrone Lamont (4.19) had a similar performance in his three innings, with two runs on one hit (HR) and three walks against six strikeouts. RHP Craig James (0.00, W) had a strikeout in the ninth to get the win. On offense, LF John-Austin Emmons (3B, R, RBI, SB, .328) led the team with three hits while RF David Hall (2B, R, .316) and 3B Francisco Gerez (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 SB, .369) had some additional power shots.

Tacoma Rainiers: 55-46, .545, 1st in PCL North
San Antonio Missions: 49-56, (18-15, 2nd half) .467 (.545), 1st in TL West
Inland Empire 66ers: 55-45 (17-15), .550 (.531), 3.5 GB CAL South
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers: 46-57 (14-18), .447 (.438), 9 GB in MWL Western
Everett Aquasox: 23-16, .590, 1st in NWL West
Peoria Mariners: 17-12, .586, 1.5 GB in AZL
Seattle Mariners (VSL Aguirre): 29-26-1, .527 3 GB in VSL Valencia

Tacoma 2, Edmonton 1 (MON)
In his best outing since being called up, RHP Gustavo Martinez (4.23, W) went seven innings and gave up one run on five hits, a hit batter, a wild pitch, and two walks against five strikeouts. RHP Jared Hoerman (6.17) recorded the next out after that, but walked two and hit one before RHP Scott Atchison (4.21, S) dug him, and the rest of the game out by allowing one hit and one walks in the last inning and two-thirds. 3B Greg Dobbs (3B, R, .289) had three hits, and CF Jeremy Reed (2B, R, .276) had two, but that was the extent of the offense. RHP Clint Nageotte tomorrow!

High Desert 15 (MIL), Inland Empire 8
RHP Greg Wear (7.06) started this disaster by going three and two-thirds innings and giving up six earned runs on twelve hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against three strikeouts. RHP Tanner Watson (5.09)went the next two and a third innings, giving up one of Wear's runs and one earned of his own on five hits, a hit batter, a wild pitch, and two walks against a strikeout. LHP Miguel Martinez (5.75) faltered again in the last three innings, giving up three runs on four hits (HR) and three walks against two strikeouts. DH Josh Ellison (R, SB, .373) led the team with four hits, though none of them did much, so I'll note the two hits apiece by CF Gary Harris (2 2B, 2 R, .264), 2B Juan Gonzalez (3B, 2 R, RBI, SB, .302), LF Jon Nelson (HR, 2 RBI, SB, .304), RF Carlos Arroyo (2 2B, .319), and SS Erick Monzon (2 HR, 3 RBI, .275). LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith tomorrow.

Beloit 2 (MIL), Wisconsin 3
LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.24) had one of his good outings, going eight innings and allowing two runs on eight hits (2 HR!) and two walks with five strikeouts. RHP Mike Hrynio (4.37, W) got the win with an uneventful ninth. On offense, SS Adam Jones (2B, .262) and RF Chris Colton (R, RBI, .248) had two hits, but LF Wladimir Balentien (HR, 2 RBI, .278/.318/.527) hit out his fifteenth, which has him tied for fifth in the league. RHP Nibaldo Acosta tomorrow.

Tri City 4, Everett 1
The M’s threw us a good kind of fastball, releasing RHP Kenny Falconer and calling up RHP Jason Snyder (4.50, L) to make the start. Despite getting the loss, Snyder had a pretty good debut, going four innings and allowing a couple of runs on four hits, two wild pitches, and three walks against seven strikeouts. The Snyder moves comes from general dissatisfaction with the performance of RHP Mark Lowe (6.31) in the rotation, and Lowe did nothing to alleviate this feeling as he gave up two more runs on seven hits (HR) and a walk in his three innings. LHP Brandon Perry (8.22) went the last two frames, walking one and striking out three, hopefully a sign that he’ll be getting back on track shortly. 2B Asdrubal Cabrera (.301) and CF Brent Johnson (R, SB, .298) both had two hits, and 1B Brandon Green (2B, CS, .286) had a double. RHP Ruben Flores tomorrow.

Venoco #1 3, Aguirre 0
RHP Marwin Vega (3.24, L) had a decent start, good even, going five innings and allowing a run on four hits, a wild pitch, and a walk with a strikeout. RHP Carlos Figueroa (7.65) went the next two innings, allowing a run on a hit, a hit batter, and two walks against two strikeouts. That run allowed by RHP Daniel Yerovi (4.29), who would walk two and record an out, then LHP Jose Jimenez (2.81) stepped in and let one of Yerovi’s runs to score, allowing one hit, one walk, and one strikeout over the last five outs. On offense, SS Deybis Benitez’ (.266) two hits were the only thing of note.

Tacoma Rainiers: 54-46, .540, 1st in PCL North

If you've checked the article recently, Rosenthal has changed his stance from "torn elbow ligament" to "elbow injury" that "will not require ligament-transplant surgery". A curious development, but for those of us who were originally alarmed at the possibility of losing Pineiro for 1-2 years, we can all take a breath now.

Mike Thompson at the seattlepi.com blog is reporting the specific injury is a strained flexor bundle, proof that by following the M's you learn more about the human arm than many students researching human biology. Two MRIs have no ruled out ligament damage, but it seems as if he will be rehabbing with the M's starting on Thursday.

I think I'll stand by my original prediction that this pulls Villone off the market, at least temporarily. It's not as if I'm opposed to trading him though, after all, if you can't shoot for the playoffs it would be nice to shoot for the #1 overall pick. I still also think that pitching may be sought as insurance in the offseason, though I'm not inclined to believe that the M's will seek much more than a placeholder or two.

Joel Piniero: torn elbow ligament. This certainly throws one hell of a wrench in the works.

It's a little early to tell, but some things are abundantly clear now. For one, we'll probably be seeing a bit more of the rookie pitchers, and for another, pitching has just become a priority in the offseason, potentially hurting our attempts to grab bigger names in offense. This may also serve to permanently put the kibosh on any rumors of Villone leaving soon.

Transaction Update:

RHP Chad Fillinger has been moved up from Everett to Wisconsin. RHP Terry Forbes has moved up from Peoria to Everett to replace him.

Fillinger, 21, wasn't that impressive in Everett. The 16th round pick this year had a 5.94 ERA with opponents batting .306 off of him, but hey, I'm not the one making the decisions here.

Forbes, 20, was a 9th round pick back in 2002. While his career minor league ERA of 4.87 coming into this year was less than impressive, not to mention his 77 hits in 61.0 innings, he certainly did his part to earn a promotion this year by not allowing an earned run in 11.2 innings and holding opponents to a paltry .163 average.

Tacoma 5, Edmonton 6 (MON)
RHP Gil Meche (5.05) had another fine start, going seven innings and allowing just two unearned runs over six hits and a walk with two strikeouts. If he can string a few starts like that together, I’ll say he’s ready to come back. RHP Jeff Harris (5.87) came in, got an out, and gave up a hit which would later score when LHP Tim Christman (4.82) took the ball and gave up a hit while notching a strikeout. Sort of defeats the purpose situational relievers, doesn’t it? In turn, LHP Randy Williams (3.48, L) came in and gave up a hit to score Christman’s run, then two more with a couple of walks mixed in to give the Trappers two runs and the victory. For the offense, 2B Mickey Lopez (R, SB, .277) had three hits, while SS Jose Lopez (2B, R, .296), DH Ryan Christianson (HR, 2 RBI, .217), and RF Greg Jacobs (2B, HR, .288) all had two. LF Elpidio Guzman (2B, RBI, .288) was 1-3 after replacing LF Jamal Strong (.315), for reasons unknown. RHP Gustavo Martinez tonight.

Inland Empire 10, High Desert 8 (MIL) (thirteen innings)
LHP Bobby Livingston (3.68, E) started this rather long game, going seven and a third innings and giving up four earned runs on eight hits (HR) and a walk against five strikeouts. RHP Mike Steele (9.35) would allow two of his own runs over the next third of an inning three hits (HR) and a strikeout for the only out. Of course, more often than not, the bullpen that’s going to win in any given game is going to be the one with LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.67, W), who went four and a third innings and allowed just one hit while striking out four. LHP Melvin Pizarro (2.94, S) picked up the save with two strikeouts in the thirteenth. For the offense in this rather drawn-out game, LF Jon Nelson (2B, R, RBI, .300) had three hits, while CF Gary Harris (2B, 3B, 2 R, .263), 2B Michael Garciaparra (HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, SB, .195), RF Carlos Arroyo (R, RBI, .316), DH Josh Ellison (R, SB, .326), and SS Erick Monzon (HR, .243) had two hits apiece. RHP Greg Wear tonight.

Beloit 5 (MIL), Wisconsin 2
LHP Tom Oldham (2.93, L) went eight innings and gave up four runs on eight hits (HR) and a walk against seven strikeouts. RHP Bryan Stitt (4.81) went the final inning and gave up an unearned run on a hit and a balk. On offense, RF Chris Colton (SB, .244) was 3-3 with a walk, while CF Michael Nesbit (R, .340) and SS Adam Jones (HR, 2 RBI, E, .259) had two hits. LHP Jason Mackintosh already started today, but he didn’t factor into the decision.

Tri City 6 (MIL), Everett 4
LHP Kendall Bergdall (5.60, L) was not very good at all, giving up four runs on four hits (HR) and five walks against two strikeouts in just an inning and a third. RHP Mumba Rivera (2.42) went the next four and a third innings and gave up a run on two hits, a wild pitch, and two walks with six punchouts. RHP Terry Forbes (4.50) finally got his call-up and went two innings giving up a run on four hits with a strikeout (transaction update soon). RHP Joe Woerman (6.57) went the last inning and gave up a hit. The only thing really of note for the offense was C Brian Schweiger (HR, 2 R, .290) going 1-2 with a couple of walks. RHP Ruben Flores moves up in the rotation tonight.

Peoria Mariners 11, Peoria Padres 12
Intra-facility rivalry! RHP Eric Carter (4.35) went three innings and gave up six runs on five hits, a hit batter, and three walks. RHP Donald Clement (4.30, L) went the next three and gave up three earned runs on eight hits, a wild pitch, and a balk with two strikeouts. RHP Craig James (0.00) resurfaced and gave up a hit in the seventh, and then RHP Stephen Grasley (5.84) struck out the side in the ninth. LF John-Austin Emmons (R, RBI, 2 SB, .296) and SS Jeff Dominguez (R, 2 RBI, 2 SB, E, .250) had three hits on the game, while the crowd of 2B Jack Arroyo (2B, 2 R, SB, .400), 1B Luis Soto (3B, 2 R, RBI, .362), and C Danny Santin (2B, 2 R, .373) had two. DH Matt Tuiasosopo (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .467) was at it again with yet another home run. Peoria has the day off today.

Aguirre 9, Cagua 4 (CIN)
RHP Edgar Guaramato (2.14, W) was absolutely brilliant in his start, going five innings and giving up just a hit and two walks while striking out eight. RHP Ronald Uviedo (5.81), not so much, as he went three innings and gave up three earned on five hits with three strikeouts. RHP Kelvin Alarcon (2.86) had a strikeout in the ninth. On offense, it was 2B Luis Valbuena (3 R, .388), RF Jose Graterol (2B, 3B, R, RBI, .328), and 3B Deybis Benitez (RBI, .262) had two hits, and C Jair Fernandez (2B, 2 RBI, .309) had a double.

I’m working on some new stuff for ITP right now, so content outside of the recaps and the upcoming transaction will be coming later.

Tacoma 6, Edmonton 4 (MON)
It’s good to see some of the guys recently sent down succeeding a bit, and the start by LHP Matt Thornton (5.57) was no real exception as he went five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out seven. RHP Jeff Harris (5.68) went the next two innings, walking two and ringing up one, then the ball went to RHP Scott Atchison (4.39, W), who picked up the win after going an inning and allowing a run on two hits and a walk. LHP Randy Williams (3.21, S) struck out one in the ninth. 1B A.J. Zapp (RBI, .297) had three hits and SS Jose Lopez (R, .289) had two hits, but CF Jeremy Reed (HR, 2 RBI, .257) seemed to do more damage in one swing of the bat.

Tacoma 5, Edmonton 2 (MON) (seven innings)
RHP Cha Seung Baek (3.89, W) got hit up pretty hard, giving up ten hits over six and two-thirds, along with a wild pitch, but those only turned into one earned run and he struck out four. I recognize that Baek had been out of action for a while, but I think he could still factor into the M’s plans fairly soon. LHP Tim Christman (4.42, S) got the final out for Baek. In the two-hit crowd were RF Elpidio Guzman (2B, R, .288), 2B Ramon Santiago (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .170), SS Jose Lopez (HR, 2 RBI, .292), and 3B Mickey Lopez (.269). LF Greg Jacobs (2B, .272) also did a little bit of damage.

Tacoma 9, Edmonton 8 (MON) (seven innings)
LHP Craig Anderson (6.45, W) finally won a game, but since it wasn’t a nine-inning one, I think I can delay reports on the sky falling. He went five innings and gave up four earned runs on seven hits, a hit batter, and two walks against two strikeouts. RHP Jared Hoerman (6.23) took over after that and was less than effective, giving up three runs on three hits and two walks before RHP Scott Atchison (4.32, S) shut it down with a strikeout in the ninth. There were hits all around, but most notable were two by LF Greg Jacobs (2B, R, RBI, .283) and CF Jeremy Reed (2B, R, 3 RBI, .269) and doubles by 2B Ramon Santiago (2B, R, RBI, .174) and C Brian Moon (2B, R, RBI, .250).

San Antonio 1, Arkansas 7 (ANA)
RHP Chris Buglovsky (3.13, L) lost another one that he didn’t deserve to, going six innings and only allowing four unearned runs on six hits and two walks against two strikeouts. RHP Aaron Taylor (3.44) struggled in the next inning and two-thirds, giving up three runs on four hits, a wild pitch, and a walk, before LHP Tim Rall (4.66) got the final out. CF Dustin Delucchi (2B, .292) had a couple of hits, and RF T.J. Bohn (3B, RBI, .302) had his fourth triple.

San Antonio 8, Arkansas 5 (ANA) (eight innings)
RHP Juan Done (5.42, E) is still inconsistent, five innings, five runs, six hits (2 HR!), a hit batter, two wild pitches, three walks, and three strikeouts. RHP Renee Cortez (4.91, W) went the next two innings, walking one and striking out two, then RHP Rick Guttormson (3.97, S) got his eighteenth save with a couple of strikeouts. There was a lot more offense in this game, with RF Shin-Soo Choo (HR, .307) getting three hits and LF Dustin Delucchi (2 R, CS, .294), CF T.J. Bohn (R, .311), DH Jaime Bubela (R, .242), and C Luis Oliveros (2B, R, PB, E, .243) all getting two. Additional power came via the bats of 3B Hunter Brown (2B, 3 RBI, .283) and SS Michael Morse (HR, .296).

San Antonio 4, Arkansas 1 (ANA) (seven innings)
LHP Chris Key (4.58, W) got the spot start and went five innings, giving up a run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts. LHP Jared Thomas (3.18, S) went the last two innings, giving up two hits, hitting a batter, walking another, and punching out two. RF Shin-Soo Choo (2B, RBI, CS, .310) and DH Jaime Bubela (RBI, .278) had a couple of hits, and SS Michael Morse (2B, R, E, .294) and 1B Eddie Menchaca (2B, R, .224) took a couple of bases with their hits. San Antonio has the next few days off.

Inland Empire 6, High Desert 2 (MIL)
RHP Juan Sandoval (4.09, W) was on again, going seven innings and allowing two runs on eight hits (HR) and a walk with eight strikeouts. LHP Melvin Pizarro (3.00, S) picked up the save after two innings of work where he allowed two hits and struck out two. 2B Juan Gonzalez (R, RBI, CS, .301) and LF Jon Nelson (2B, R, RBI, SB, .294) had three hits, while 3B Jesus Guzman (R, RBI, .310) and DH Matt Rogelstad (.243) had two. What the heck is up with RF Carlos Arroyo (HR, 2 RBI, .316), who hit yet another homer?

Inland Empire 4, High Desert 1 (MIL)
RHP T.A. Fulmer (5.25, W) sought to regain his early season form, going six innings and allowing a run on five hits, a hit batter, and a walk against six strikeouts. LHP Miguel Martinez (5.50) went the next two innings, allowing four hits and striking out a batter, and then RHP Darwin Soto (4.50, S) got his sixth save in the ninth. Soto’s becoming a pretty safe bet in the ninth inning, which is good because I had him pegged for closer to start the season. Hits and power were once again separate from each other, as 2B Juan Gonzalez (RBI, .304), LF Jon Nelson (R, .297), RF Carlos Arroyo (2B, 2 R, .316), and C Brian Lentz (2B, 2 RBI, .250) all ended up with the same number of total bases.

Burlington 9 (KC), Wisconsin 11
LHP Ryan Feierabend (3.75, W) wasn’t so hot, going six and a third innings and giving up six runs on seven hits, a wild pitch, and four walks with seven strikeouts. RHP Austin Bilke (7.88) allowed two of Feierabend’s runs and two of his own to score over the next five outs, giving up three hits and striking out two. RHP Mike Hrynio (4.47, S) would give up a run on three walks before picking up the save. SS Adam Jones (3 R, RBI, .259) had four hits, and while they didn’t go very far, he got a good amount out of them. 2B Eric Blakeley (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB, .310) had three hits, 1B Bryan Lahair (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .340), RF Chris Colton (2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .240), and C Chris Collins (2B, R, 2 RBI, .256) had two each.

Beloit 10 (MIL), Wisconsin 2
RHP Brandon Moorhead (3.74, L) gave up three runs on five hits, three wilds pitches, and four walks against four strikeouts in five innings to get the loss. The defense killed the pitching in this one, with four errors total, and RHP Brad Rose (13.94) was no exception, as only one of his six runs was earned, which he gave up over the course of two-thirds of an inning, three hits, a wild pitch, and a walk. RHP Kenly Chang (4.93) got through the next two and a third innings unscathed, allowing three hits and two wild pitches while striking out three, but LHP Casey Abrams (10.47) would give up a run on two hits and a walk in his inning. CF Michael Nesbit (R, CS, .338) had two hits out of the leadoff spot, and 1B/LF Bryan Lahair (2B, .337) and SS Eric Blakeley (HR, .312) showed some power.

Everett 5, Eugene 4 (SD)
LHP Shawn Nottingham (1.69) continued his tear through the NWL, going five innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits, a hit batter, and two walks against seven strikeouts. RHP Phil Cullen (2.20, W) went the next two and a third, allowing a run on a hit, a wild pitch, and a walk while striking out three, then RHP Chad Fillinger (5.94) allowed a hit and a walk while striking out two to finish up the inning. RHP Aaron Trolia (3.86) had a couple of strikeouts to pick up the save. 1B Brandon Green (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .276) really led the offense, going 2-2 with a couple of walks, but SS Asdrubal Cabrera (3B, R, .311) and RF Marshall Hubbard (2B, .244) did their parts too.

Tri City 6 (COL), Everett 10
A pretty good way to start out a homestand. Except for the starting pitching, as RHP Aaron Jensen (4.39) went four and two-thirds innings and gave up all six of the runs on eleven hits (2 HR!) and three walks with a couple of punchouts. LHP Vance Hall (7.94) gave up a hit and struck out three over the next two and third innings, then RHP Cibney Bello (7.27, W) picked up the win after striking out one in his two innings. Almost every starter had at least one hit, with the grand slam by RF Mike Wilson (HR, 4 RBI, .279) doing the most damage. Other things of note were the two hits by 2B Oswaldo Navarro (2B, R, 3 RBI, .265), 1B Brandon Green (R, RBI, .283), and C Omar Falcon (2 R, .241), with power from DH Marshall Hubbard (2B, .245) and LF Casey Craig (2B, 2 R, .292).

Peoria Mariners 13, Scottsdale Giants 8
RHP Oliver Arias (6.75, W) started this one out with five innings that saw four earned runs on eight hits (HR) and a walk against four strikeouts before RHP Terry Forbes (0.00) came in for another two scoreless innings, with one hit and one walk. RHP Tim Dorn (10.50) continued to struggle, giving up a run on a hit, a wild pitch, and two walks against two strikeouts in his inning, then RHP Ryan Leaist (9.00) gave up two runs in the final inning on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Everyone in the lineup was hitting in this game, SS Matt Tuiasosopo (2B, R, 2 RBI, .500), DH Jeff Flaig (2B, R, 2 RBI, .265), and LF John-Austin Emmons (3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB, .265) with three, and CF David Hall (2B, R, 2 RBI, .333), 3B Francisco Gerez (2B, 2 R, RBI, E, .377), 1B Luis Soto (R, RBI, .360), C Danny Santin (R, RBI, .365), and RF Reynaldo Cruz (2B, 2 R, .350) with two apiece.

Arizona Rangers 4, Peoria Mariners 5
LHP Robert Fagan (3.16) went six innings, giving up three runs on five hits (HR) and a wild pitch against six strikeouts. RHP Roman Martinez (7.98, W) went the next two, holding the Rangers to a hit, a walk, and a strikeout, then LHP Adam Brandt (5.68) picked up the save. On offense, C Chao Kuan Wu (.302) and LF Joseph Jacobitz (3B, 2 R, .275) had two hits, while SS Matt Tuiasosopo (3B, .488) had his first triple and 1B Luis Soto (HR, 3 RBI, .352) added his first home run of the season.
