Game recaps (8/26/06)

Tacoma 0, Tucson 6 (ARI + 33)
LHP Bobby Livingston (4.59, L) got called in for the start and gave up two runs on four hits, a balk, and two walks against four Ks in six innings. RHP Aaron Looper (6.20) let four more score on four hits and two walks against one K in the seventh. I wonder what the odds are on him being gone in the offseason, oh wait… RHP Mike Flannery (5.66) had an uneventful eighth inning.
Losing to Jarvis is bad enough, but having him strike your team out nine times and get through the seventh inning is pretty sad. 3B Greg Dobbs (2B, .296) had a double, and C Jeff Clement (.248) and SS Oswaldo Navarro (SB, .250) both had a hit and a walk.

San Antonio 8, Frisco 6 (TEX + 4) (ten innings)
LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (4.12) let four runs score on seven hits and three walks against seven Ks in six innings. RHP Chad Fillinger (3.18, BS, W) let two more score on two hits, a walk, and two Ks in three innings, allowing the game to tie, but got the win as the Missions rallied in the top of the tenth and RHP Byron Embry (2.70, S) picked up a save, giving up a hit and striking out two.

1B Marshall Hubbard (2B, HR, 3 RBI, .286) and C Brian Schweiger (R, .224) both contributed four hits, 2B Yung-chi Chen (2B, R, RBI, .303) had three, and LF Jason Bourgeois (2 R, RBI, .279) and DH Jesus Guzman (2.54) both had two hits. SS Scotty Baseball (R, .316) and CF Wladimir Balentien (3B, R, RBI, .232) both had a hit and a walk. Three more walks in seven games to go… I think he can do it.

Bakersfield 6 (TEX - 6), Inland Empire 7
RHP Cibney Bello (4.00, E) regressed to his old form, giving up five runs (two earned) on four hits, two wild pitches, and six walks while striking out five in five and two-thirds innings. I don’t think six errors in the game helped anyone though. RHP Mumba Rivera (4.28) walked one in the next inning and a third, and then RHP Joe Woerman (2.88) struck out two in the eighth. RHP Aaron Trolia (5.14) gave up an unearned run on a hit and a walk in the ninth.
Even though the Sixers made more errors, the Blaze pretty much lost theirs on the one error…

3B-1B Ron Prettyman (3B, R, 3 RBI, .284), LF Casey Craig (HR, 2 RBI, .293), and 1B Andy Hargrove (2B, R, 2 E, .212) had extra-base hits. Prettyman and Hargrove both walked once, and 2B-3B Luis Valbuena (R, E, .287), DH Alex Meneses (R, .267), and C J.B. Tucker (PO, E, .207) all had two walks.

Clinton 1 (TEX – 20), Wisconsin 5
LHP Jose Escalona (4.06) pitched four innings, giving up one hit and one walk while hitting one and striking out five. They may be keeping him on a pitch count at this point in the year, as he’s well over twice the number of innings he threw last year. RHP Roman Martinez (3.56) pitched the next three innings perfectly, ringing up two in the process, and then RHP Cory Koliscak (5.79) gave up a run on three hits in the next inning. RHP Brain Kappel (1.64) had an uneventful ninth too. It could be just that he’s older and capable of dominating this kind of competition, but it’s kind of surprising that he went undrafted in this light.
SS Chris Minaker (2B, R, RBI, .304) got moved down to the three spot and responded by going 1-for-2 with a double and two walks. Former AZL standouts 1B Gerardo Avila (2B, R, .175), 3B Alex Liddi (2B, R, .167), and CF Eddy Hernandez (2B, RBI, .242) all had doubles.

Everett 4, Eugene 8 (SD + 6)
RHP Natividad Dilone (3.72, L) gave up three runs in three innings on three hits, a hit batter, and three walks with two Ks. The experiment of LHP Jose Suriel (3.90) didn’t go any better, as he let five (four earned) score after four hits, two hit batters, seven walks, and five Ks in the final five innings.
1B Manelik Pimentel (R, .273) had two hits, RF Bryan Sabatella (2B, R, RBI, .243) doubled, and 2B Dean Zorn (RBI, .235) walked twice.

Peoria Mariners 10, Mesa Cubs (- 4)
RHP Doulgas Salinas (2.84) pitched four innings, giving up a run on two hits, a hit batter, and three walks as he struck out five. RHP Bryan Ball (0.00, W) had a hit, a walk, and a K to show for the next two innings of work, and LHP Will Brown (6.23) gave up two hits in the seventh. RHP Jared Eichelberger (4.44) gave up three hits, hit one, walked one, and struck out two in the final couple of frames, but no runs crossed against him.
3B Deybis Benitez (2 R, 2 RBI, .275), CF Wellington Dotel (2B, 3B, 2 R, 3 RBI, .254), RF Jairo Hernandez (3B, R, 2 RBI, .175), C Julian Henson (R, SB, .215), and 2B Juan Guzman (R, .278) all had two hits. I thought Benitez might be overmatched coming into the AZL, but he’s improved every month and was hitting .314/.416/.348 in August coming into the game, though he could still use some power. He and Guzman both had a walk, as did LF Marquise Liverpool (3 R, CS, .267), who also had a hit and was hit himself. This was another game in which 2B Juan Beltran (.259) showed up in the middle of the infield instead of behind the plate.

Game Recaps (8/25/06)

Tacoma 2, Tucson 11 (ARI + 31) (seven innings)
RHP Francsico Cruceta (4.55, L) pitched only three+ innings, letting seven runs score on seven hits (3 HR!) and a walk against three Ks. That’s nine home runs allowed on the month now for Cruceta. RHP Emiliano Fruto (2.86) let two of those score, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out three in two innings, and then RHP Justin Husiman (8.83) gave up four runs on six hits (HR) and a walk in the sixth.
CF Adam Jones (HR, .275) and DH Rob Johnson (3B, RBI, .231) both had two hits and RF Jon Nelson (2B, .293) and 2B Michael Garciaparra (2B, R, .316) both doubled.

Tacoma 3, Tucson 4 (+ 31) (seven innings)
LHP Cesar Jimenez (4.49) pitched three innings, giving up three hits and striking out two. RHP Jeff Harris (3.52) gave up a hit in the fourth, and RHP Mike Flannery (5.95) gave up a run on three hits in the fifth. In the sixth, RHP Jon Huber (2.20, L) lost it when three runs (one earned) scored on two hits and two walks in the sixth.
3B Greg Dobbs (2 RBI, .297) had three hits, CF Adam Jones (2B, R, .278) had two, and 2B Ismael Castro (HR, .294) doubled.

Midland 3 (OAK + 8), San Antonio 2 (thirteen innings)
Back to where we started… RHP Travis Chick (3.19) let two runs score on five hits, a hit batter, and three walks against six Ks in six and two-thirds innings. Finally struck out a few guys, but I think LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (3.19) had him beat there, as he gave up one hit and struck out seven through four innings. RHP Byron Embry (3.00) gave up a hit, threw a wild pitch, and struck out two in the next inning and a third, and then LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.61) gave up the final unearned run on a hit and a walk in the thirteenth.
LF Jason Bourgeois (SB, .278) led the team with four hits, and DH Scotty Baseball (R, .319), 2B Yung-chi Chen (R, .293), 1B Marshall Hubbard (.276) had two hits each. 3B Matt Tuiasosopo (2B, .190) doubled, which is only his second or third extra-base hit in double-A.

Bakersfield 7 (TEX - 5), Inland Empire 6
RHP Justin Jordan (4.95, L) gave up two runs (one earned) through four innings on five hits, a wild pitch, a walk, and a K. I guess it figures that they’d plug him in there, but with ten games left, it’s not like it matters all that much. RHP Juan Done (7.66) let two more (one earned) cross after two hits, three walks, and two Ks in two innings. RHP Ivan Blanco (3.36, E) had three unearned runs score against him on a hit batter and two walks against two Ks in the final three innings.
2B Luis Valbuena (R, RBI, SB, .294), 1B Ron Prettyman (2B, R, RBI, .283), LF Casey Craig (R, .294), and CF Brent Johnson (RBI, CS, .292) all had two hits, and RF Chris Colton (2B, R, .235) and SS Jeff Dominguez (3B, R, RBI, .238) both had extra-base hits.

Clinton 7 (TEX – 19), Wisconsin 4
RHP Marwin Vega (6.09, L) pitched three and a third innings before the rain cut it off, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits, a wild pitch, and two Ks. RHP Ruben Flores (5.22) picked it up for two and two-thirds innings after that, giving up a run on two hits (HR) while striking out five. RHP Edgar Guaramato (5.74) let three unearned score after a hit and four walks in two-thirds of an inning, and RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (2.30) walked one and struck out one in an inning and a third following that. LHP Lance Beus (4.23) gave up a run on two hits, a hit batter, and a walk in the ninth.
SS Chris Minaker (HR, 2 RBI, .308) had three hits, RF Johan Limonta (2B, R, .238) and DH Robby Hudson (.277) had two apiece, and CF Eddy Hernandez (2B, R, .243) doubled. 1B Gerardo Avila (RBI, .173) had a hit and a walk.

Clinton 0 (- 20), Wisconsin 1 (eight innings)
LHP David Asher (4.03) pitched the required seven innings, giving up five hits, hitting a batter, throwing a wild pitch, walking one, and ringing up six, but with no one scoring, RHP Brian Kappel (1.71, W) came in for he eighth and gave up two hits and a walk while striking out one.
Right now, it sucks to be the Clinton starter, because instead of having his name go down in the record books as being part of the recent string of no-hitters, he gave up a home run to C Curtis Ledbetter (HR, .230) in the eighth, the only hit he allowed, or the T-Rats needed. 3B Alex Liddi (.000) has been bumped up from the AZL and went 0-for-2 in his first Midwest League game.

Everett 3, Eugene 2 (SD + 5)
LHP Tony Butler (3.07) pitched four innings, giving up five hits, hitting a batter, and walking one while striking out three. RHP Stephen Richard (3.24) got the next two and two-thirds, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks with one strikeout, though RHP Joe Kantakevitch (2.73, BS, W) let one of those score on three hits and a walk against three Ks in the final two and a third innings.
C Jair Fernandez (2 RBI, PB, .238) had a couple of hits and RF Carlos Peguero (2B, .206) doubled. A couple of guys reached twice via other means, with SS Ogui Diaz (.231) getting a hit and a walk and 1B Joe White (R, .250) managing to get plunked twice.

Game Recaps (8/24/06)

If you haven't seen them already, there are new player pages linked up to the stats at MiLB.com that provide splits and groundball ratios all sorts of neat things you can easily spend hours going through... or I can spend hours going through, I should say. Either way.

Tacoma 0, Tucson 6 (ARI + 29) (seven innings)
RHP Rich Dorman (4.68, L) pitched all six innings, giving up six runs on seven hits (2 HR!), three walks, and six Ks.
3B Hunter Brown (2B, .271) had a double. This may be the shortest recap ever.

Tacoma 1, Tucson 5 (+ 30) (seven innings)
LHP Travis Blackley (9.00, PO, L) wasn’t exactly welcomed back to the PCL, giving up five runs on nine hits (2 HR) and three walks against two Ks in five innings. RHP Scott Atchison (2.32) gave up a hit and hit a batter in the sixth.
DH Jeff Clement (.252) and SS Oswaldo Navarro (.257) both had two hits and 2B Jose Morban (R, SB, .246) had a hit and a walk.

Midland 5 (OAK + 7), San Antonio 3
Can’t win ‘em all, but it was nice to pick up the games in the standings when they could. LHP Ryan Feierabend (4.41, L) gave up five runs on six hits (HR) and four walks with five Ks in six and a third innings. I get the impression that he hasn’t done that well against Midland this year, but I could be wrong on that one. RHP Craig James (2.73) walked two and struck out four in the next inning and two-thirds, and then RHP Stephen Kahn (6.14) handed out two free passes to go along with two Ks in the ninth.
SS Scotty Baseball (R, RBI, .318), 2B Yung-chi Chen (R, RBI, .283), 1B Marshall Hubbard (2 2B, RBI, .273), and C Luis Oliveros (.203) all had two hits.

Lancaster 1 (ARI + 2), Inland Empire 7
LHP Justin Thomas (3.98, W) pitched seven innings and gave up a run on five hits and two walks while striking out six. August has been good to him, as he’s run a 2.23 ERA, though the walks could’ve made it much higher. RHP Aaron Trolia (5.25) walked one and struck out two in the eighth, and then RHP Jose de la Cruz (2.68) had two hits, a walk and a K coming out of the ninth.
C Omar Falcon (3 RBI, .246) had three hits, 2B Luis Valbuena (2B, R, .287) had two, RF Chris Colton (2 R, RBI, .235) had a hit and a walk, and LF Casey Craig (RBI, .291) walked twice.

If you didn’t catch it already, Rotoworld has LHP Shawn Nottingham as the player to be named in the Broussard deal, so I don’t know who will be starting tomorrow. I liked him, but there are better lefties around in the system.

Wisconsin’s game was rained out partway through. It’ll pick up at 3:00 pm PDT and be followed by a seven-inning game.

Everett 3, Salem-Keizer 4 (SF + 28)
Bah. RHP Ricky Orta (4.89, E) gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits, a hit batter, four walks against seven Ks. At least he’s been improving his K rate lately. RHP Justin Souza (6.20) struck out three in the next two and a third innings, and RHP Doug Fister (2.04) gave up two runs on four hits and a walk while going the rest of the distance. Unfortunately, that meant that the two runs the Sox picked up in the eighth and the ninth were erased along with their lead.
2B Marcos Villezcas (HR, .225) had a couple of hits and 1B Manelik Pimentel (2B, .278) had a double and a walk.

Phoenix Brewers 10 (- 15), Peoria Mariners 5
RHP Brandon Morrow (2.45) pitched one inning and struck out a batter. Better than nothing. RHP Carlos Javier (6.34) let a run score on two hits and a walk in the next two innings, but that wasn’t much compared to the implosion RHP Marquis Pettis (6.15, E, L) suffered, as he let nine runs (seven earned) score on six hits, a wild pitch, and three walks with one strikeout in two innings. RHP Will Fenton (4.76) rung up one and hit one in the next two innings, and then RHP Haley Winter (6.66) and RHP Rocky Collis (3.55) split the last two, with Winter striking out one and Collis walking one and striking out two.
Though C Juan Beltran (RBI, .262) had two hits and RF Alex Gary (3B, R, .243) and 2B Juan Guzman (2B, RBI, .242) clubbed some extra-base hits, walks were the name of the M’s game for the most part, as LF Marquise Liverpool (R, .268), 3B Deybis Benitez (R, .278), and DH Jairo Hernandez (R, .143) all walked twice.

Game Recaps (8/23/06)

Tacoma’s game in Tucson was rained out.

Midland 3 (OAK + 6), San Antonio 4
RHP Jorge Campillo (3.18, W) jumped to the Texas League and gave up two runs on eight hits, a walk, and two Ks in five and two-thirds innings. His tenure in the Cal League was short-lived, and rightly so. RHP Chad Fillinger (3.05) gave up a run on three hits, a walk, and two Ks in the next two innings, and then RHP Byron Embry (3.52, E, S) gave up a hit and struck out three in the final inning and a third.
LF Jason Bourgeois (2B, 2 R, .275) and C Brian Schweiger (R, RBI, .177) both had two hits and DH Scotty Baseball (CS, .310), CF Wladimir Balentien (.238), and 1B Marshall Hubbard (.268) all had two walks. Four to go for Wlad.

Inland Empire 5, High Desert 9 (KC – 3)
RHP Aaron Jensen (7.34) let eight runs score through four and a third innings on eight hits (HR), a wild pitch, four walks, and four punchouts. RHP Mumba Rivera (4.35) let two of those score, plus one of his own, after three hits, a walk, and three strikeouts in an inning and two-thirds. RHP John Sullivan (0.00) made the jump from the AZL and had a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a walk in his inning of work before RHP Justin Jordan (5.10) came in and walked one in the eighth.
LF Casey Craig (HR, .296) and C J.B. Tucker (RBI, .208) both had a pair of hits. DH Luis Valbuena (2B, .282), CF Brent Johnson (2B, 2 R, PO, .291), and 1B Andy Hargrove (HR, 2 RBI, .204) all had extra-base hits. Craig, Johnson, and Hargrove walked too.

Everett 1, Salem-Keizer 3 (SF + 27)
LHP Steve Uhlmansiek (3.55) pitched six and a third innings and gave up two runs on four hits (HR) and a wild pitch while striking out seven. Walks aside, which I would expect with the layoff he’s had, Uhlmansiek’s turned in a good season. RHP Kameron Mickolio (3.14) pitched the last inning and two-thirds and let an unearned run score on two hits and a hit batter while he struck out one.
Not much in the way of offense tonight, though LF Bryan Sabatella (.248) had two hits.

Peoria Mariners 2, Scottsdale Rangers 3 (- 9)
RHP Nathan Adcock (2.90) turned in a good start, giving up five hits and striking out four through four innings. RHP Jason Snyder (0.00) gave up a couple of unearned runs on two hits and a K in the next three innings, and RHP Kyle Parker (4.23, L) let another run score on two hits and a strikeout in the eighth.
LF Marquise Liverpool (R, .272), DH Wellington Dotel (.254), and C Erwin Jacobo (.211) each had two hits, and 2B Matt Vogel (2B, RBI, .261) doubled.

With Tacoma being rained out and Wisconsin already off, I figured now would be as good a time as any to do the irregular DSL updates. The M’s are still leading their division with a 41-22 record, 11-6 since last note, and IF Luis Nunez is still leading in average at .333, though he’s slowed down a little in recent weeks. One interesting note is that OF Maximo Mendez, another toolsy left-handed bat, has supplanted Nunez for the team lead in OPS. The latest complete stats have him at .830, .023 higher than Nunez, but he’s also striking out in over a third of his at-bats. The .416 OBP and .414 SLG wouldn’t ordinarily be too much to get excited about, but since he’s hitting .231, it’s noteworthy and, at the same time, a little scary. LHP Richard Ortiz (62) and RHP Gregorio Rosario (60) have both joined LHP Eddy Fernandez (73) on the league’s top five in Ks, and both are interesting arms, but exhibit some of the same problems a lot of pitchers do down there, namely, a lot of walks.

More goods on the DSL should be on their way soon…

Game Recaps (8/22/06)

Las Vegas 7 (LA – 11), Tacoma 1
RHP Clint Nageotte (5.74) gave up six runs on nine hits, five walks, and two strikeouts in five innings. RHP Aaron Looper (4.70) let one more unearned run score on two hits, a hit batter, and two Ks in the final four innings.
RF Jon Nelson (HR, .299) and 2B Ismael Castro (2B, .290) both had two hits.

Midland 2 (OAK + 7), San Antonio 3
RHP Yorman Bazardo (3.07, W) had a start that was a bit odd. Through six and a third innings, he gave up ten hits, a wild pitch, and three walks while striking out two, but those only translated into two runs. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (3.58) pitched the next inning and two-thirds, walking two and striking out two, and then RHP Byron Embry (4.26, S) struck out two in the ninth.
DH Scotty Baseball (2B, HR, .309) and SS Erick Monzon (PO, .258) both had a couple of hits, and CF Wladimir Balentien (HR, .239) and 1B Marshall Hubbard (2B, .271) knocked some ones that went for extra-bases. LF Jason Bourgeois (R, SB, E, .273) had a couple of walks, and Hubb had one, but no for Balentien. If a home run here and there is the tradeoff, I’m okay with that, but some balance would be great.

High Desert 1 (KC – 4), Inland Empire 3
RHP Andy Baldwin (0.00, W) had a nice entry into the system, pitching seven innings and giving up one hit and one walk, hitting a batter, and striking out four. RHP Joe Woerman (3.00) let a run score on two hits and a hit batter while he rung up one in the eighth, and then RHP Ivan Blanco (3.52, S) returned to the league, handing out a free pass, striking out two, and earning the save.
CF Brent Johnson (R, RBI, .291), 3B Alex Meneses (R, .304), and LF Josh Womack (2 RBI, 2 SB, .290) all had a couple of hits and 1B Ron Prettyman (R, SB, .283) walked twice.

Everett 4, Salem-Keizer 8 (SF + 26)
The Volcanoes strong offense took down RHP Chris Tillman (7.59, L) after two+ innings, with him giving up four runs on eight hits, four walks, and a K. RHP Andrew Fiorenza (4.61) let four more cross on four hits, a walk, and two Ks in the next four innings, and RHP Ari Kafka (4.12, E) gave up an unearned run on a hit and two Ks in the final two frames.
The offense had 2B Dean Zorn (2 2B, R, RBI, .241) with two hits, DH Joe White (2B, R, .253) and 1B Manelik Pimentel (2B, RBI, .267) with doubles, and LF Bryan Sabatella (R, CS, .242) with a hit and a walk.

Peoria Mariners 0, Mesa Angels 6 (+ 9)
RHP Anthony Varvaro (2.25, E, L) took the loss as he gave up two runs on three hits and three walks against two Ks in three innings, but so long as he’s pitching without pain… RHP Jared Eichelberger (5.38, E) got the next two innings, letting three score on two hit batters, two wild pitches, and five walks, with three Ks to go along with all that. RHP Bnryan Ball (0.00, E) let an unearned run score on a hit as he struck out two in the sixth, and then RHP Robert Harmon (8.59) threw a wild pitch and struck out the side in the seventh. LHP Will Brown (6.53) gave up a hit in the final inning.
Not much in the way of offense, but I’ll go with LF Marquise Liverpool (SB, PO, A, .267) for reaching twice by a hit and being hit.

AFL Rosters Announced

Baseball America has a list of the Arizona Fall League Rosters posted online, a little earlier than usual, it seems.

The M's representatives on the Peoria Javelinas roster are as follows...

Not much out of the ordinary here, all of them are guys who could use a little more experience from where they are now. I was a little surprised by how the pitching picks were all guys who have been relievers for the whole year, but that's how it goes sometimes and the competition for innings is usually pretty stiff.

James is one of those lower profile guys who has been putting up strong numbers, but isn't quite as heralded as some of the high draft picks. He's had two bad months (April, August) and three good ones (everything between) where he's held opposing batted below the Mendoza line, walks aside. Those free passes are a bit anomalous given his minor league track record, but there are just enough things that are off to make you wonder. He'd be a borderline 40-man addition in the offseason, but the M's are loaded with quality, young relievers lately and I don't know that he's a better option than the other guys.

One of those "other guys" is Kahn, who tore through the California League only to struggle in Texas and get leapfrogged by both Lowe and O'Flaherty. Various theories have gone around concerning his struggles, among them, his fastball being too straight, but his status as a prospect hasn't suffered too much as a result. He's pitched abotu thirty innings at double-A now, but his numbers haven't really fluctuated that much from one month to the next (except for the wakls in July). He could use more innings before the year is over, and this is a nice way to do it.

Out of the three, O'Flaherty seems most likely to get a good chunk of the innings, but that's really just speculation on my part given that he was a starter back in '04 and could (emphasis there) conceivably move back at some point. The debilitating back issues that plagued him his first few seasons are a distant memory now and he's use his plus fastball/sinker/slider combo to move up the ladder and strike out batters in the bunches this year (K/IP of over one), but he's also been giving up a number of hits throughout, unlike his counterparts. The other thing is that right-handed batters have hit him pretty well throughout and anything he can do to fend off the LOOGY label (if he is a reliever) will benefit him.

Garciaparra... well, I'm not sure what to say. He's finally come around and turned his athletic ability into baseball ability, and that's one thing. In Tacoma, he's been able to pull his walks and his strikeouts to near even levels and has an OBP that's currently over a hundred points higher than his average, and that is certainly something the M's offense can use. The downside is that his power is almost a non-factor, he's not a stolen base threat, and we haven't see him play anywhere but short and a second. At this point, I think all of us are excited to be getting anything out of the '01 draft, and he's hitting better than Willie Dynamite did in his Tacoma tour, but some questions still need to be answered.

Of the prospects involved in the new guard's aggressive promotion scheme, Tui has been the concensus pick for too much, too soon. He had thirty extra-base hits in Wisconsin last year and, considering Jones' line at the same age in the same place, some of us had him pegged for a breakout season in the California League, myself included. Despite playing in friendlier hitting climes, he's going to be lucky if he cracks twenty-five extra-base hits this year and may struggle to get to twenty. With the Sixers, he was an average-driven player and he's carried that to the Missions, except he's batting around .200. He's starting to see the ball a bit better, and has a better eye ratio in Texas now, but it's still off considerably from where he was last season and he isn't hitting the ball any harder. Part of his AFL experience will be to get him accustomed to third a bit more, but he really needs to start hitting if he's going to earn his keep there.

The difference between Garciaparra and Wilson making good on their athleticism is that, while Wilson is built like a football player, Little G is built like Ichiro. He technically broke out last season, but after three years of mediocrity, we needed a better sample size and he provided. A good 43% of his hits have gone for extra-bases this season, even better than last year, and like Tui, he's improved his eye ratio slightly since moving up to double-A. August has seen him reverse direction a bit after an impressive, though unsustainable performance in July. This too is a bit of an outlier and he should stablize somewhere between them in the future. He's got some power, and of all our near-ready minor league bats, he might be the most proficient at putting it to use.

As an added bonus, the Peoria Javelinas staff will have SA pitching coach Brad Holman on the roster, which will give the pitchers a good opportunity to continue their routines uninterupted.

Game Recaps (8/21/06)

Edit (Noonish): It's been going around since late last night that Blackley's getting the call to fill Baek's spot in Tacoma. That much we knew and hence the TBA on the pitching probables, but a reader has informed me that Jorge Campillo is also moving on up to San Antonio. I checked around, and it seems like RHP Andy Baldwin's taking the mound tonight for the Sixers.

Las Vegas 3 (LA – 12), Tacoma 7
LHP Bobby Livingston (4.67, W) managed to give up just one run on ten hits (HR) while striking out two in six innings. RHP Mike Flannery (5.79) gave up a run on three hits, two walks, and a K in the next inning and a third, and RHP Jon Huber (2.02, S) gave up a run on two hits and a walk against three strikeouts going the rest of the distance.
DH Jeff Clement (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .249), RF Jon Nelson (HR, 2 RBI, .294), and 2B Ismael Castro (2B, 2 R, .283) each had a couple of hits, and LF Mike Morse (2B, R, .249) and C Rob Johnson (3B, RBI, .229) both had extra-base hits. CF T.J. Bohn (RBI, SB, .275) had a hit and two walks.

San Antonio 10, Tulsa 0 (COL – 2)
LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (3.96, W) gave up three hits and a walk while throwing two wild pitches and striking out six in seven innings of work. RHP Stephen Kahn (6.31) gave up a hit, walked a pair, and punched out five in the final two innings, which is good to see considering some of his other outings recently.
LF Jason Bourgeois (HR, 3 R, .275) had three hits out of the leadoff spot, 2B Yung-chi Chen (2B, 3B, 5 RBI, .282) had two, and DH Scotty Baseball (3B, R, 2 RBI, .299), RF Mike Wilson (HR, .281), and C Luis Oliveros (3B, 3 R, RBI, .192) had extra-base hits. CF Wladimir Balentien (.239) and SS Erick Monzon (2 R, 2 E, .254) both had two walks. Six to go for Balentien…

High Desert 2 (KC – 3), Inland Empire 0
RHP Cibney Bello (4.03) gave up a run on four hits, two wild pitches, and two walks against six Ks in eight innings, and that run came on a solo shot, of course. RHP Juan Done (7.94) let another score on two hits and a walk in the ninth.
The Sixers were the latest victims in the recent rash of no-hitters going on in the minors, and drew four walks through the end of the game. I think I’m just going to skip over this part, but if you’re that curious, Valbuena, Prettyman, Johnson, and Womack drew the walks.

Wisconsin 5, Dayton 4 (CIN - 1)
LHP Paul Fagan (5.12, W) pitched seven and two-thirds innings and let four runs score on eight hits, two walks, and eight Ks. RHP Brian Kappel (1.80, S) struck out one in the final inning and a third.
2B Ron Garth (2B, R, .283) and LF-RF Johan Limonta (HR, 3 RBI, A, .234) both had two hits and C Adam Moore (HR, .293) and RF-CF Eddy Hernandez (2B, .243) contributed some extra-base knocks.

Yakima 4 (ARI – 19), Everett 1
RHP Natividad Dilone (3.44, L) let four runs (three earned) score on eight hits, two walks, and a K in five and a third innings. LHP Rollie Gibson (3.16) gave up two hits and struck out three in the next two and a third innings, letting one of Dilone’s runs score, and RHP Joe Kantakevich (2.96) gave up two hits and walked one while striking out three in the final inning and a third.
Being held to three hits and a walk, this game wasn’t really notable for offense either. Santin, Sabatella, and Fernandez had the hits, and Villezcas had the walk, but…

The game against the hated Padres in Peoria was rained out.

Game Recaps (8/20/06)

Las Vegas 4 (LA – 11), Tacoma 3
RHP Jeff Harris (3.68) pitched five innings, giving up a couple of runs on five hits and a K. RHP Scott Atchison (2.38) went the next two, giving up a hit and striking out two, but RHP Emiliano Fruto (3.00, BS, L) lost it, letting two unearned runs score on two hits against three Ks in the final two innings.
3B Greg Dobbs (2B, SB, .303) had a couple of hits, and 2B Hunter Brown (2B, R, .277), CF T.J. Bohn (2B, 2 R, E, .275), and RF Jon Nelson (2B, E, .290) all had doubles.

I kept forgetting to mention this, but the Tacoma News Tribune noted a few days ago that 1B Roberto Petagine had been released and LHP Thom Oldham retired. Some would argue that Petagine would’ve provided more spark to the offense if only they’d played him, but Broussard was a better match for the team going forward anyway. “Texas” Oldham was a favorite of the old ITP crew and generously donated his time to answering random questions and sharing his stories from around minor league baseball. We’re going to miss that.

San Antonio 0, Tulsa 7 (COL – 1)
RHP Travis Chick (3.25, L) gave up seven runs on twelve hits (HR), two wild pitches, and a K in four and a third innings, so it wasn’t so much his WHIP catching up with him as it was an all-around bad start. LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.65) let one of those score on a hit, a walk, and a K in the next two and two-thirds innings, and then LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (3.77) gave up a walk and struck out one in the eighth.
2B Jesus Guzman (.258) had a couple of hits and a walk, but he was the only notable on the offense. CF Wladimir Balentien (.241) drew a walk too, so one down, eight to go.

Inland Empire 5, Rancho Cucamonga 0 (ANA – 8)
LHP Shawn Nottingham (4.17, E, W) pitched seven innings this time around, giving up six hits and three walks while striking out seven. RHP Aaron Trolia (5.63) and RHP Jose de la Cruz (2.73) split the last two innings, with Trolia striking out the side and de al Cruz punching out two in addition to giving up a hit and a walk.
LF Josh Womack (3B, 2 R, RBI, .290) had a triple and a walk, 1B Andy Hargrove (2 RBI, .207) had a couple of hits, and C Omar Falcon (RBI, .233) had a single and a walk.

Wisconsin 7, Dayton 8 (CIN 0)
RHP Nick Allen (3.86) got pulled after two+ innings, giving up a run on a hit along with a K. RHP Roman Martinez (3.80, L) let that run score, along with five more (four earned) after two hits, a wild pitch, two hit batters, a walk, and a K in an inning and a third. RHP Edgar Guaramato (5.81) let three of those score, and one of his own, following three hits, two hit batters, a walk, and two Ks in an inning and two-thirds. RHP Juan Colon (7.08) let one more run score after three hits (HR) and three Ks in two and a third innings, and RHP Ruben Flores (5.29) finished up the game, striking out one.
3B Jeff Flaig (3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .218), 2B Ron Garth (2 R, .281), and 1B Johan Limonta (3B, R, 2 RBI, .228)

Yakima 8 (ARI – 20), Everett 1
LHP Tony Butler (3.55, L) got through only three and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on two hits and six walks against seven Ks. RHP Stephen Richard (3.22) pitched the next three and a third, giving up a couple of hits and striking out five. RHP Aaron Solomon (2.65) pitched an inning+ after that, giving up four runs on four hits, a hit batter, and two walks, but LHP Jose Suriel (3.24) let three of those score on a grand slam home run and a K in the ninth inning.
1B Joe White (.260) had a hit and two walks out of the leadoff spot, and with a league-leading OBP, that may be where he belongs. RF Carlos Peguero (2B, R, .250) doubled, and 2B Dean Zorn (.233) had a pair of hits.

Game Recaps (8/19/06)

Sweep!

Las Vegas 1 (LA – 12), Tacoma 7
RHP Francisco Cruceta (4.21) pitched seven and a third innings and allowed just one run to score on four hits (HR) and two walks while he rung up eight. RHP Aaron Looper (6.11) gave up one hit and struck out three in the final inning and two-thirds.
Almost everyone in the lineup had at least one hit. 3B Hunter Brown (SB, E, .277) and CF T.J. Bohn (2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .274) had two, 1B Mike Morse (HR, .247) and DH Rob Johnson (.231) had their hits leave the park, and LF Greg Dobbs (.300) drew a walk in addition to his hit.

San Antonio 7, Tulsa 3 (COL – 2)
LHP Ryan Feierabend (4.28, 3 PO) allowed three runs to score on four hits, a pair of wild pitches, a hit batter, four walks, and five Ks in six and two-thirds innings. RHP Craig James (2.81, BS, W) let two of those score in a third of an inning, giving up a hit and striking out one, but ended up with the win when the Missions rallied. RHP Byron Embry (5.06) struck out four of the final six batters he faced.
DH Jesus Guzman (2B, HR, 2 R, 5 RBI, .255) powered the offense with two hits and a walk, including a grand slam home run in the eighth. LF Jason Bourgeois (2B, R, .272) and RF Mike Wilson (HR, .289) both had extra-base hits, and CF Wladimir Balentien (R, .242) walked twice. I know, with only a couple of weeks of games to go, it’s not entirely realistic, but with the way he’s going, it’s possible… so I’d like to note that if Balentien draws nine more walks between now and the end of the season, he would have as many walks this year as he did in his previous three years of minor league baseball, spanning just under 1000 at-bats.

Inland Empire 2, Rancho Cucamonga 0 (ANA – 7)
LHP Justin Thomas (4.20, PO, W) pitched the full nine innings, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out seven. It’s not the first complete game shutout a Sixers pitcher has thrown, as Rohrbaugh did the same earlier in the year, but it’s still pretty cool.
2B Luis Valbuena (2B, R, .297) and 3B Ron Prettyman (RBI, CS, .291) both had two hits and CF Brent Johnson (R, SB, .293) had a single and a walk. I can kind of understand Valbuena as a leadoff man, but Johnson, who has 18% of hits going for extra-bases, batting fifth? Not so much. I guess they don’t have a whole lot of options at this point.

Wisconsin 1, Dayton 6 (CIN – 1)
LHP Jose Escalona (4.19, L) pitched five innings, letting five runs score on five hits (HR), a wild pitch, and four walks against a couple of Ks. RHP Cory Koliscak (5.40) gave up a couple of hits and couple of walks while striking out one in the next two frames, and LHP Lance Beus (4.10) let two runs score (one earned) after two hits, a wild pitch, two walks, and one strikeout in the eighth.
DH Adam Moore (2B, R, .302) and 1B Johan Limonta (2B, R, .222) both had doubles. Through 126 at-bats, Moore is now hitting .302/.371/.444. CF Kuo-hui Lo (SB, CS, A, .255), SS Robby Hudson (CS, .274), and C Travis Scott (RBI, CS, .239) each had a hit and a walk.

Yakima 6 (ARI – 21), Everett 10
RHP Ricky Orta (5.26, W) got through five innings, giving up a couple of runs, one of ‘em earned, on three hits and three walks while he struck out five. RHP Kameron Mickolio (3.33) let an unearned run score on a pair of hits and a walk in three innings, and then RHP Doug Fister (1.60) let three score in the final inning after three hits (HR) and a K. First time that’s happened in a while.
DH Danny Santin (2 2B, HR, 3 RBI, .286) and C Jair Fernandez (2B, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, .231) both had three hits in the game, supplying quite a bit of power for the offense. I’m not too sure about Santin or what position they’ll find for him, but he’s hitting again and that’ll help get him back on track, provided he can remain healthy. SS Marcos Villezcas (2B, R,.231), 3B Manelik Pimentel (2B, .280), and LF Leury Bonilla (R, .213) all had a hit and a walk.

Scottsdale Giants 2 (+ 6), Peoria Mariners 7
RHP Carlos Javier (6.46) pitched a couple of innings and had some success this time around, giving up a walk and striking out one. RHP Leonardo Torres (4.98) pitched the next three innings, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out two, and RHP Jared Eichelberger (4.43) came in for two innings after that, walking two, throwing a wild pitch, and striking out three. RHP Marquis Pettis (4.07) pitched the final two innings, giving up the only runs the Giants scored on three hits, a walk, and two Ks.
