Mariner Minors
Game Recaps (7/16/05)
Portland 3 (SD – 1), Tacoma 8LHP Bobby Livingston (5.40) got through five innings and gave up three runs on five hits, a hit batter, and four walks against one strikeout. RHP Jeff Heaverlo (5.11, W) went the next two and picked up the win, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out two, and RHP Sean Green (3.22) struck out two while going the rest of the way. The run production for the Rainiers can be mostly attributed to the seven run outburst in the seventh, so I’m blockquoting that instead of writing it all out…

· Jamal Strong grounds out, second baseman Josh Barfield to first baseman Greg Sain.
Springfield 5 (STL 0), San Antonio 4RHP Juan Sandoval (3.62, PO, L) went six+ innings and gave up all five runs after eleven hits and three walks against two strikeouts. LHP Tim Rall (2.68) went the next two, scoring one of Sandoval’s runs and giving up a hit, walking three, and punching out one overall. RHP Emiliano Fruto (2.87) walked one and struck out one in the ninth. CF Gary Harris (RBI, .280) and 2B Ismael Castro (2B, R, CS, PO, .256) both had two hits, and 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, .273) and C Rene Rivera (2B, R, RBI, .286) had doubles.
Inland Empire 5, Modesto 9 (COL + 10)RHP Chad Fillinger (12.12) struggled in another start, going three and a third innings and giving up four runs on six hits, a hit batter, and two walks against four strikeouts. RHP Aaron Trolia (4.28, L) got the loss after he gave up a couple of runs on three hits (HR), a walk, and a strikeout in the next two and two-thirds innings. LHP Troy Cate (1.72) went the final two, and gave up three more runs (two earned) after two hits, a hit batter, and two walks against four Ks. 3B-2B Matt Rogelstad (2B, 3 R, RBI, .309) had three hits, CF Sebastien Boucher (2 R, .340) and RF B.J. Garbe (CS, .268) had two, and 1B Bryan Lahair (2B, RBI, .285) and DH Wladimir Balentien (2B, .272) added doubles.
Wisconsin 10, Kane County 4 (OAK + 3)LHP Julio Santiago (5.55, W) had probably his best start yet at the level, going seven innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits (HR), a wild pitch, and a walk against three Ks. RHP Cibney Bello (4.59) went the next inning and struck out two, then LHP Adam Brandt (0.00), in his Midwest League debut, walked one and struck out one. Brandt could probably be starting right now, but I’m just happy he’s pitching above Everett. There were two hits each from LF Brent Johnson (2 R, .260), 2B Yung-Chi Chen (.288), C Rob Johnson (3 R, RBI, .281), 1B Luis Soto (2 R, RBI, .179), DH Matt Tuiasosopo (3B, R, 4 RBI, .290), and SS Oswaldo Navarro (2B, 2 RBI, .267). 3B Brandon Green (2B, R, RBI, E, .228) had a double. The T-Rats sent nine men to the plate in the fourth and fifth innings, when they score nine of their runs.
Spokane 2 (CHC - 5), Everett 4Someone’s gone and messed with the rotation… RHP Eric Carter (6.38) went four and two-thirds innings, giving up a couple of runs on three hits, four wild pitches, and five walks against two Ks. Effectively wild, I think would be the term for it. RHP Jeff Gilmore (1.16, W) gave up just one hit over the next three and one-third innings and struck out six, and then LHP David Asher (0.00, S) got the save, striking out one in the ninth. SS Robert Hudson (2 RBI, .257) had a couple of hits, and LF Casey Craig (HR, .350), DH Danny Santin (2B, R, .294), and CF Trevor Heid (2B, 2 R, 2 SB, .256) had extra-base knocks.

Breaking News: Kahn Signs (?)
I was doing a run through the minor league rosters to see if there was anything significant, starting with the
Peoria roster when I noticed the name Stephen Kahn listed near the bottom.
Kahn was supposed to be a tough signing, considering he believed he should've been drafted higher than the fifth round, and I hadn't heard much else for quite a while on the matter.
I haven't seen any news sources jumping out with the story yet (it's a sad situation when you're relying on rosters for news), but it could just be a matter of time.
Stay tuned.

Game Recaps (7/15/05)
Transactions are done; I’m rolling with the recaps.
Portland 8 (SD 0), Tacoma 4RHP Cha Seung Beak (5.71, L) only made it through two and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on six hits, a hit batter, and a walk against a strikeout. RHP Michael Bumstead (4.98), back from temporary leave related to Hurricane Dennis, went two and a third innings after that, and gave up a run on three hits (HR). RHP Clint Nageotte (0.87) pitched two innings after that, giving up one hit and striking out three, and then LHP Cesar Jimenez (10.80) pitched the final two, giving up a couple of runs on two solo shots and striking out two. Jimenez might not have been quite ready for the promotion, and could be back in double-A when the various pitchers on the Rainiers’ DL start to come off. The middle infield duo of 2B Ramon Santiago (2B, RBI, .245) and SS Yuniesky Betancourt (.293) had two hits each, and CF Jamal Strong (2B, R, .310), DH Hunter Brown (2B, R, .287), and 1B Aaron Rifkin (2B, 2 R, .251) had a double each.
Springfield 3 (STL - 1), San Antonio 13RHP Renee Cortez (4.17) got the spot start and pitched about as well as anyone not named Jeff Harris could given the circumstances, going four innings and keeping it scoreless, giving up five hits, a wild pitch, and a walk while striking out four. RHP R.D. Spiehs (3.38) gave up three runs on five hits (HR) over the next two innings and struck out one, and LHP Chris Key (1.42) went two innings after that, with one each of hits, walks, and strikeouts. LHP Jared Thomas (0.00) DID make an appearance in the game, pitching the ninth without event. SS Adam Jones (2B, HR, 2 R, SB, .329) had four hits in the game, but hey, whoa, don’t get any ideas about promoting prospects now (kidding, really). CF Jaime Bubela (R, RBI, SB, .292) added three hits, and the crowd of 3B Jesus Guzman (R, .274), RF T.J. Bohn (2 HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, 2 SB, .319), DH Gary Harris (2B, 2 R, RBI, .277), LF Jon Nelson (R, 2 RBI, .224), and C Rene Rivera (2B, R, 4 RBI, .287) had two each. Those are the seventh and eighth home runs by Bohn, and as much as I like the guy, I’d like him a lot better if the power was more consistent instead of the week or two every few months where he’s absolutely terrorizing the pitchers. 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (2 R, SB, .263) will also get the recap nod for walking four times in a single game.
Inland Empire 3, Modesto 6 (COL + 9)RHP Brandon Moorhead (5.05) went three and one-third innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks against six Ks. The strikeouts are nice, but he’s still not quite back yet. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (4.97) went the next three and two thirds and gave up a run on four hits against four strikeouts, and LHP Derrick Ellison (9.45) gave up two runs on three hits and a strikeout in the eighth inning. SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2 2B, R, RBI, .338), pulling the same stunts as Jones (for shame), had two doubles and a walk in the game, and CF Michael Nesbit (3B, RBI, .273) and 2B Michael Garciaparra (3B, R, .261) both had triples. DH Wladimir Balentien (RBI, .272) drove in one with his single and walked twice. Still keeping an eye on him…
Quad Cities 3 (STL +8), Wisconsin 2RHP Aaron Jensen (5.33, L) pitched decently, going six innings and giving up all three runs to the Swing on ten hits, a wild pitch, and two walks against three Ks. LHP Eric O’Flaherty (4.94) was perfect through two innings split evenly between groundouts and fly outs, and then RHP Jon Lockwood (0.00) debuted in the ninth with a hit and a strikeout to his line. DH Robert Johnson (2B, .278) had a double, but the offense only had four hits on the night.
Everett 2, Vancouver 4 (OAK, + 12)LHP Justin Thomas (2.92, E) went six and two-thirds innings and gave up a couple of unearned runs after six hits and a hit batter against four strikeouts. RHP Edgar Guaramato (6.75, L) got the loss in the final inning and a third after giving up two runs (one earned) on a hit, a wild pitch, and two walks against a strikeout. No idea what’s going on with him. RF Mike Saunders (RBI, .234) reappeared on the radar screen with two hits on the night (same comment applies), and CF David Hall (2B, .326) and LF Alex Gary (2B, R, RBI, .234) had a double each.
Phoenix Brewers 7 (- 7), Peoria Marines 3The only thing this game was lacking was a Dorman appearance. RHP Jorge Campillo (6.00, L) pitched the first two and gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk against a strikeout. RHP Scott Atchison (5.40) pitched an inning after that, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk against a strikeout, and LHP George Sherrill (0.00) followed him, striking out a batter along the way. LHP Steve Uhlmansiek (6.75) faced only one batter, walking him, before RHP Toma Bonilla (6.75) came in for the next three innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk against a couple of Ks. RHP John Sullivan (4.91) had a hit, a walk, and three strikeouts over the final two innings. 2B Juan Guzman (2 R, .288) and SS Jeff Dominguez (R, E, .302) both had three hits, and 1B Andy Hargrove (2B, .367) had a double and a walk.
The box scores for the Aguirre games were never posted, so there’s a chance the doubleheader was rained out. Hate it when that happens.

Game Recaps (7/13/05 and 7/14/05)
More double recap craziness. Working on a transaction update the should be turned in tonight, and posted at a later date.
Portland 3 (SD, - 1), Tacoma 4LHP Damian Moss (4.48) went six frames and gave up three runs on four hits (HR) and two walks against four Ks. RHP Felix Hernandez (2.23, W) picked up the win in two innings of perfect relief where he struck out four. RHP Masao Kida (3.84, S) had a hit and a strikeout in the ninth. CF Jamal Strong (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .312) and LF Shin-soo Choo (2B, 3B, R, RBI, .259) both had two hits, and SS Yuniesky Betancourt (R, SB, .287) was 1-for-2 with a walk. I don’t usually note lines like that, but with Betancourt, any walk is noteworthy.
Arkanas 4 (ANA, – 4), San Antonio 8Soriano wasn’t up to the task (soreness), so LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (4.77) got his start in, going four innings and giving up three runs on six hits (HR) and six walks against five strikeouts. LHP Chris Key (1.54, W) got the win, giving up a run on three hits (HR) and a strikeout over the next four. RHP R.D. Spiehs (2.30) stuck out one in the ninth. SS Adam Jones (R, E, .314) had another three-hit performance, but made another error (and another the next day). RF T.J. Bohn (2B, HR, 2 RBI, .320) and 2B Ismael Castro (2 RBI, .257) had two hits, and CF Gary Harris (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .275) had a home run and a walk. C Brian Moon (R, RBI, .252) was back in action after a brief DL stint.
Arkansas 6 (- 3), San Antonio 1RHP Jon Huber (5.13, L) went six innings and gave up five runs, all of them in the second, on six hits and three walks and a strikeout. RHP Phil Wilson (5.56) went the next two and gave up a run on two hits (HR) against a K. LHP Tim Rall (2.83) had a walk and a strikeout in the ninth. 3B Jesus Guzman (R, .271) and 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (RBI, .264) both had two hits, but the offense was otherwise quiet.
Inland Empire 4, San Jose 5 (SF, + 2)LHP Ryan Feierabend (4.28, PO) went five innings and gave up a run on eight hits( HR) while striking out seven. Not a bad line, on the whole. RHP Jeff Mault (18.00) had a rough debut, going an inning+ and giving up a couple of runs on three walks, as a couple of those came at the top of the seventh, and RHP Greg Wear (4.72, L) scored both and got the loss after two runs on two hits, two hit batters, and two walks against a strikeout in an inning and a third. RHP Aaron Trolia (4.19) pitched the final two-thirds, coming in with the bases loaded and working his way out of it, but it was too late by then. SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, R, .324) and DH Wladmir Balentien (RBI, .270) both had two hits, and 3B Erick Monzon (HR, 2 R, .265). C Luis Oliveros (PB, .136) is back in the Cal League as the backup.
Quad Cities 7 (STL, +8), Wisconsin 1RHP Mark Lowe (4.76) had a solid three-inning stint, giving up a hit and striking out three. RHP Roman Martinez (3.66) went four innings after that and gave up a single run on four hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk against two Ks. LHP Donny Langdon (10.50, L) lost after giving up six runs (five earned) on three hits (HR), a hit batter, and three walks against a K over the next inning and a third, but RHP Justin Jordan (1.69) scored one of those. LF-CF Brent Johnson (2B, SB, .255) had two hits and RF Mike Wilson (2B, R, .268) had a double, but the offense was rather weak on the whole.
Quad Cities 3 (+ 7), Wisconsin 4RHP Randy Frye (5.97) went five and two-thirds innings and gave up all three runs on four hits (HR) and five walks against a strikeout. RHP Stephen Grasley (3.29) went the rest of the way, giving up a hit, a hit batter, and three walks while striking out six. Grasley has won seven games now… DH Brandon Green (2B, RBI, .231) and 2B Oswaldo Navarro (2B, RBI, .262) both had two hits, with Oz driving in the winning run in the sixth. 1B Marshall Hubbard (2 R, .297) walked and scored twice.
If you haven’t caught word already, Casey Abrams is out and Jon Lockwood was moved up to replace him. A move that could’ve been made months ago, but that’s the way the game is sometimes.
Everett 6, Vancouver 7 (OAK, +12) (thirteen innings)LHP Paul Fagan (4.29) went four and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on five hits, a wild pitch, a balk, and two walks. RHP Jeff Gilmore (1.93) went the next two and two-thirds and gave up a run on a hit, a wild pitch, and two walks against two Ks. RHP Joe Woerman (6.75) opened the eighth giving up two walks, one of which scored after LHP David Asher (0.00) came in, though Asher only had a wild pitch to his line and struck out three in two innings. LHP Lance Beus (4.00) pitched two innings after that, giving up a couple of hits and a walk, and then the loss went to LHP Rollie Gibson (3.00, L), who gave up two runs on four hits (HR) and three walks against a strikeout in the final inning and two-thirds. 3B-SS Ron Prettyman (R, RBI, SB, CS, .417) and LF Bryan Sabatella (3B, R, CS, .286) both had three hits, and CF-LF Casey Craig (2B, .357) and 1B Jeff Flaig (2B, 2 R, RBI, SB, .292) had two hits.
Everett 7, Vancouver 5 (+ 11)RHP Nick Allen (3.19, W) went six innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and a hit batter against four strikeouts. Allen is a perfect 4-0 to start his pro career. RHP Oliver Arias (4.91) went the next inning and two-thirds and gave up two runs on three hits (HR) against a pair of strikeouts. RHP Cory Koliscak (1.08, S) walked one and struck out one in the last inning and a third to pick up the save. LF Casey Craig (3B, RBI SB, .360), 2B Reed Eastley (2 R, E, .333), 1B Jeff Flaig (2B, 2 R, .300), DH Bryan Sabatella (R, RBI, .294), and RF Alex Gary (2B, R, 3 RBI, .227) each had two hits. SS Robert Hudson (2B, R, .233) had a double. Suffice to say, it helps to have a lot of college-level hitting when you’re going up against Vancouver, which might be the most experienced team in the league, as usual.
Peoria Mariners 3, Mesa Angels 4 (+ 2)RHP Scott Atchison (2.25) got an inning in, giving up a run on two hits and striking out two. LHP Harold Williams (2.25, PO) went five after that and gave up a run on six hits and a walk against five Ks. I think it’s only a matter of time before he ends up in Everett. LHP Estelin Soto (5.52, L) had another blown save and loss in the next two innings, with two runs given up on four hits and a walk against a couple of Ks. C Kevin Gergel (2B, RBI, .277) had two hits, and LF Greg Halman (3B, R, .273) and 2B Ronald Garth (3B, R, RBI, .314) both tripled.
Peoria Mariners 9, Surprise Rangers 7 (-5)RHP Chia-an Huang (7.30) only pitched two innings this time, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits, a walk and a strikeout. RHP Juan Zapata (5.50, W) went the next four, giving up six hits, a wild pitch, and two walks while striking out two. LHP Jose Suriel (5.54) went two frames after that, giving up two unearned runs on four hits, and RHP Juan Colon (9.00), just demoted from Everett, went two innings after that and gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, a walk, and a strikeout. 1B Andy Hargrove (2B, R, RBI, .368) led the charge with three hits, and 2B Juan Guzman (R, .262), RF Eddy Hernandez (2B, R, RBI, .360), SS Dean Zorn (3B, 2 R, RBI, 2 E, .280), and C Kent Dixon (HR, 2 R, SB, E, .409) each had two hits. PH-3B Leury Bonilla (3B, 4 RBI, .260) added a triple. By the way, if anyone at MILB.com is reading, I’d like to put a request out to add an initial to the Hernandez in the box score, as they do with Bonilla, because otherwise I have to click to find out if it’s Jairo or Eddy…
The Aguirre game on Wednesday was rained out.
Aguirre 5, Venoco #1 2 (HOU, +2)LHP Kervin Montbrum (2.08) went three and two-thirds and gave up a couple of runs on three hits, a wild pitch, and four walks against two strikeouts. RHP Alfredo Venagas (2.63, W) went the last five and a third, giving up just four hits, a wild pitch, and a hit batter against a lone strikeout. No one had multiple hits in this one, but I’ll note 3B Deybis Benitez (2B, R, 2 RBI, .198) yet again for going 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Game Recaps (7/12/05)
As per reader request, I’ve added a new little bit to the lines for each team, a +/- thing that will usually accompany the affiliate that indicates the opponent’s team in relation to .500 at the end of the game. This should give a slightly better read on how the M’s teams are faring against tougher/weaker competition, but note that, for most of the teams, it’s the record with respect to .500 in the second half.
Arkansas 1 (ANA, -3), San Antonio 2 (ten innings)RHP Rafael Soriano (0.00) hit a batter in an inning’s worth of rehab stint. LHP Thom Oldham (3.50) went the next seven innings and gave up a run on five hits and a walk against three strikeouts. Oldham seems to be getting back on track in the second half after a rough start. RHP Renee Cortez (4.57, W) pitched the last two, giving up a walk and striking out one. RF T.J. Bohn (2 2B, R, .317) had another three hits in the game, CF Jaime Bubela (HR, .291) had two hits, and 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (2B, RBI, .262) had a double.
Inland Empire 5, San Jose 3 (SF, +1)Well, it is an improvement. RHP Mumba Rivera (8.34, W) got his second Cal League win, going five and two-thirds innings and giving up three runs on eight hits (3 HR!!) and four walks against three strikeouts. LHP Troy Cate (0.66) went the next two and one-third innings and had a hit, a hit batter, a walk, and two strikeouts to show for it. RHP Craig James (3.00, S) had two strikeouts in the ninth. CF Sebastien Boucher (2B, 2 R, .348), 1B Bryan Lahair (R, 2 RBI, .289), and LF Carlos Arroyo (RBI, SB, .351) each had two hits in the game.
Peoria Padres 8 (+5), Peoria Mariners 9 (thirteen innings)RHP Jorge Campillo (0.00) made an appearance in rehab, striking out one in the first inning. The scheduled starter, RHP Miguel Marquez (9.60), showed some flashes of the potential that sent him to the Arizona League as a seventeen-year-old, going five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while punching out eight. RHP John Sullivan (6.00) went the next two innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits (HR) and a walk against three strikeouts, and then RHP Tyrone Lamont (4.20) went three innings after that, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out three. LHP Worth Lumry (7.20, W) gave up three runs on four hits and a hit batter in the thirteenth, but ended up getting the win as the Mariners rallied back with four. RF Jose Graterol (2B, 2 R, RBI, CS, .500), DH Curtis Ledbetter (HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, .364), and 1B Kevin Gergel (2B, R, RBI, .256) had three hits apiece, with Ledbetter hitting the walk-off grand slam in the thirteenth inning (with Graterol on base, I might add). LF Marquise Liverpool (CS, .259) and SS Jeff Dominguez (2 SB, RBI, .257) both had two hits. Dominguez and CF Tim Auty (R, .393) are both back in Peoria now.
Aguirre 5, Venoco #2 5 (BAL, +2)RHP Ronald Uviedo (2.70, E) went five and one-third innings and gave up three runs on two hits, a hit batter, and a walk while striking out five, and RHP Jorge Acosta (3.30) finished up the sixth giving up an unearned run on two hits. RHP Karlin Taylor (3.38) gave up a run on two hits and two walks in the inning and two-thirds that followed, and RHP Diomny Gaetano (0.42) took it to extra innings, allowing one hit and striking out two over the next three and a third. CF-LF Manuel Pinto (2B, R, .311) and SS-3B Deybis Benitez (3 RBI, .194) both had two hits.
It’s been a rough stretch for the DSL M’s, and they’ve gone 5-6 since last note, though they remain tied for first in the Santo Domingo Norte division. OF Wellington Dotel (.382, 1st in RBI (23), 1st in hits (39), 1st in triples (4), 1st in HR (5)) and IF Ogui Diaz (.343, 2nd in runs (19)) remain the top two hitters in the division, but the rest of the offensive contributors seem to have dropped off. LHP Eddy Hernandez (0.85, 3-1, 39 Ks) is still second in the ERA race and strikeouts, but with his first loss he’s now tied for eighth in overall record with teammate RHP Richard Ortiz (2.08, 3-1, 19 K).

Game recaps (7/11/05)
Arkansas 0 (ANA), San Antonio 3RHP Juan Sandoval (3.40, W) started and had one of his great games, going seven innings and giving up three hits, two hit batters, a wild pitch, and two walks against five strikeouts. RHP Emiliano Fruto (2.91, S) pitched the final two, giving up three hits and striking out one. SS Adam Jones (RBI, SB, .306) had three hits and is posting an OPS just north of .800 as a teenager in double-A. Good for him, now about those errors… LF Jaime Bubela (2 R, .289) had two hits and 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, R, .268) and C Rene Rivera (2B, .288) both doubled.
Inland Empire 2, San Jose 1 (SF)If I had to count on one pitcher in the Sixers staff at this point, I’d probably go with LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.91, W), who went the full nine innings and gave up a run on five hits (HR) and a walk against four strikeouts. 1B Bryan Lahair (2B, R, .286) and 2B Michael Garciaparra (2B, .267) both doubled, and CF Sebastien Boucher (CS, .341) had a single and two walks.
Wisconsin 12, Peoria 11 (CHC)RHP Ivan Blanco (6.12) went just three and a third innings and gave up nine runs on eight hits (HR), a wild pitch, a balk, and three walks against two strikeouts. Since I’ve been in Blanco’s corner a lot lately, I’ll note that before an error was overturned, there were only five earned runs. If that doesn’t satisfy you, then chalk it up to him being jerked around a lot between various forms of relief and then shoved into the rotation in an emergency. RHP Cibney Bello (4.69) went the next two and two-thirds and gave up two unearned runs on three hits and a strikeout. LHP Eric O’Flaherty (5.16, W) pitched the final four and got the win, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out four. The real story here was the comeback from the 2-11 deficit, which required twelve of the thirteen position players on the roster to pull off, all of whom had hits. DH-SS Matt Tuiasosopo (2 R, .293) had three hits in the game, LF-3B-LF Brent Johnson (R, 2 RBI, SB, .249), 2B-SS-2B Yung-Chi Chen (2B, R, .292), C Omar Falcon (2B, R, 2 RBI, .280), and CF Jack Arroyo (2 R, RBI, .239) had two each, and RF Chris Colton (HR, .368) and SS Oswaldo Navarro (2B, R, .262) had some extra-base hits. PH Mike Wilson (.267), PR-CF Josh Womack (R, .262), and PH-LF Robert Johnson (2B, 2 RBI, .277) all had hits in limited playing time.
Salem-Keizer 0 (SF), Everett 7LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (2.63, W) had a great start, going five innings and giving up five hits and a wild pitch while striking out six. RHP Jon Lockwood (0.00) strung together three innings where the only batter to reach was hit. Otherwise, he struck out five and in the small sixteen-inning sample this season, his WHIP is 0.25 and he’s striking out over ten and a half per nine innings, which is crazy any way you look at it. LHP Rollie Gibson (1.23) struck out one in the ninth. 2B Luis Valbuena (2B, R, 2 RBI, SB, .293), CF David Hall (R, SB, .364), and SS Robert Hudson (2B, 2 R, RBI, .227) had two hits each, but this game was all about the pitching.
San Joaquin 1 (PIT), Aguirre 2LHP Jose Jimenez (4.12) went four and two-thirds innings and gave up a run on eight hits, a couple of hit batters, a balk, and a walk against six strikeouts. LHP Hugo Castro (4.29) went two innings after that, giving up one hit, walking four, and striking out three, and RHP Kelvin Alarcon (1.79, W) got the win, going two and one-third innings, giving up one hit and striking out three. RF Manuel Pinto (2B, RBI, .288) had the walk-off hit for Aguirre, which was, oddly enough, their only hit of the game.

Game Recaps (7/9/05 and 7/10/05)
Double recaps again
Tacoma 3, Tucson 10 (ARI)LHP Andrew Lorraine (4.35, L) went five innings and gave up six runs on eleven hits (HR) and two walks against three strikeouts. LHP Cesar Jimenez (12.00), still adjusting to the level, gave up four runs on five hits and punched out three over the next two frames. LHP Jared Thomas (4.87) gave up a hit and struck out one in the eighth. The offense was a little weak with YuBet and Choo going to the all-star game (LF Sam Bradford, DH Tim Auty, and PH Jeff Dominguez were called up as replacements, and all were hitless, though Bradford drove in two and Auty walked), though the 5-6-7 hitters of 1B Greg Dobbs (2 R, .345), 3B Hunter Brown (R, .286), and 2B Ramon Santiago (2B, RBI, .248) had two hits each.
Tacoma 4, Tucson 10RHP Jeff Harris (3.68, L) gave up seven runs over four and two-thirds innings on eight hits (2 HR!) and a walk against three Ks. RHP Sean Green (3.54) went an inning and a third after that, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits. RHP Felix Hernandez (2.29), pitching out of the ‘pen until further notice, had a hit and a strikeout in his inning, and RHP Clint Nageotte (1.08) had a hit and a walk after that. SS Justin Leone (R, .281) was 3-for-3 with a walk and CF Jamal Strong (R, .309) and 3B Hunter Brown (HR, 4 RBI, .291) had two each. Yes, that was a grand slam by Brown. Among the emergency call-ups, LF Sam Bradford (.167) went 1-for-4.
San Antonio 9, Midland 5 (OAK)RHP Jon Huber (4.97, W) got through five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and a walk against seven strikeouts. LHP Tim Rall (2.91) went an inning and two-thirds after that, with two hits, two wild pitches, and three strikeouts to show for it. RHP Renee Cortez (4.81) pitched an inning and a third, giving up a walk and striking out two after that, and LHP Chris Key (1.40) struck out two in the ninth. RF T.J. Bohn (2 2B, R, 3 RBI, CS, PO, .305) had three hits in the game, 3B Jesus Guzman (R, 3 RBI, .273), 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (2B, HR, .267), and 2B Eddie Menchaca (3 R, .226) had two, and LF Jaime Bubela (2B, R, .285) had a double.
San Antonio 4, Midland 5 (OAK)LHP Bobby Livingston (.286) went six and a third innings and gave up three runs on eight hits and a walk against five strikeouts. RHP R.D. Spiehs (2.45) got his first loss with the Missions, giving up two runs on two hits (HR), a wild pitch, and a walk, but RHP Emiliano Fruto (3.02) gave up a hit to score one of those runs before recording the final out of the eighth. RF T.J. Bohn (2B, 3B, R, 2 RBI, .315) tore it up again, going a perfect 5-for-5 in the game. CF Jaime Bubela (R, RBI, .287) and C Rene Rivera (R, .289) both had two hits, and 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (2B, RBI, .266) had another double.
Modesto 10 (COL), Inland Empire 9Another game with a patchwork pitching performance; if you need a reason for why I’ve been listing mostly TBAs for the Sixers starting pitcher lately, look no further. RHP Rafael Soriano (0.00) gave up a hit in the first, and was followed by RHP Brandon Moorhead (5.03) went the next two+ giving up five runs on six hits and two hit batters. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (5.13) scored two of those and one more after two hits, two walks, and a strikeout in two+ innings of work. LHP Troy Cate (0.79) let two unearned runs score in the next three innings on two hits and two walks against four strikeouts. LHP Derrick Ellison (7.20) got the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks, but RHP Greg Wear (4.62) scored the final run after a wild pitch and a strikeout. Had the Sixers pulled this one out, I would have considered subbing DH Bryan Lahair (2 HR, 7 RBI, .284) into the line above instead of Inland Empire, as he did most of the damage with his four hits. CF Sebastien Boucher (3B, 2 R, E, .314), RF B.J. Garbe (.267), and C Justin Ruchti (R, .215) had two hits each.
Modesto 11, Inland Empire 9Another close game, and further evidence that the pitching setup is insane. RHP Chad Fillinger (12.46, L) went two and one third innings and gave up nine runs on twelve hits (HR), a walk, and a strikeout. RHP Aaron Trolia (4.23) went the next four and one-third and gave up a run on three hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk with two more strikeouts. LHP Derrick Ellison (7.94) went two-thirds of an inning after that and gave up a run on a single walk, and if you’re wondering how that happened, it was RHP Greg Wear (4.42) again, giving up a hit, hitting a batter, and striking out four over the final inning and two-thirds. DH Wladimir Baleniten (RBI, .272) had three hits in the game, and CF Sebastien Boucher (3B, R, RBI, .333), SS Asdrubal Cabrera (3B, 3 R, SB, E, .345), 1B Bryan Lahair (HR, 3 R, .287), and RF B.J. Garbe (R, RBI, .269) had two each.
Wisconsin 10, Peoria 5 (CHC)RHP Mark Lowe (5.03) got an inning in, striking out two, before being pulled for RHP Aaron Jensen (5.38, W), who went the next six, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits, a hit batter, and four walks against four Ks. LHP Donny Langdon (3.86) had two hits, two walks, and a strikeout over the final two frames. DH Brent Johnson (2B, 2 R, .240) had three hits in this one, LF Josh Womack (R, E, .261) and 2B Oswaldo Navarro (2 RBI, .267) had two, and 1B Marshall Hubbard (HR, 3 RBI, .310) and C Omar Falcon (HR, .269) showed off some power.
Wisconsin 12, Peoria 10LHP Julio Santiago (5.85, PO) only got through two and two-thirds innings, giving up seven runs (all in the third) on seven hits, a wild pitch, a balk, and two walks against one strikeout. RHP Stephen Grasley (3.46, W) let one of those cross the plate, but no more than that, and had five hits, two walks, and three strikeouts in four and one-third innings. RHP Justin Jordan (1.93, S) picked up a save in the last two innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on a hit and two walks. SS Matt Tuiasosopo (2 2B, R, RBI, .288) and CF-LF Jack Arroyo (R, 2 RBI, .231) had three hits each, while LF-RF Brent Johnson (2 R, SB, .245), 3B Brandon Green (R, 2 RBI, 3 E, .224), and RF Mike Wilson (2 2B, 2 R, 4 RBI, SB, .265) had two and DH Chris Colton (HR, 3 R, 2 SB, .382) hit one out of the park and walked twice.
It pleases me to note that they’ve finally freed Ivan Blanco, at least temporarily.
Salem-Keizer 11 (SF), Everett 12Despite some shaky pitching, particularly late in the game, the Aquasox came out on top in this one. RHP Nick Allen (3.60, W) went six innings and gave up five runs on eight hits (HR) and a walk against a couple of Ks. LHP Adam Brandt (54.00, E), making his first appearance with the team, only recorded one out and gave up two runs on two hits and a walk. RHP Edgar Guaramato (6.75, E) gave up one of those and two of his own on two hits, a hit batter, a walk, and three strikeouts over the next couple of innings, but RHP Cory Koliscak (1.29, S) let one of those runs score and one of his own (the first on the season) after a hit and a pair of plunked batters. CF-LF Casey Craig (2 HR, 3 R, 5 RBI, .368), 1B Reed Eastley (R, RBI, .400), and SS Robert Hudson (R, RBI, .167) each had two hits, and 2B Luis Valbuena (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .301) and C J.B. Tucker (HR, 2 R, .292) showed some flashes of power.
Salem-Keizer 3, Everett 2LHP Justin Thomas (4.00) pitched for five innings and gave up three runs on six hits, a wild pitch, and two walks against a K. One of these days I’m going to mess up and list Jared Thomas instead of Justin Thomas, so be prepared. RHP Jeff Gilmore (0.00) recently signed out of Stanford, made his debut after that, going two scoreless innings and allowing two hits while punching out three. RHP Juan Colon (5.00) had three walks and two strikeouts over the last two innings. 1B Jeff Flaig (2B, RBI, .315) and CF Trevor Heid (2B, 2 R, .250) both had three hits, and C J.B. Tucker (2B, .288) had a double and a walk.
Peoria Mariners 8, Surprise Royals 7RHP Juan Zapata (7.07) got his first official start of the season, but didn’t do much with it, going three innings and allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks against three strikeouts. LHP Worth Lumry (5.62) followed for two frames, giving up a hit and a walk, and then LHP Jose Suriel (6.55, PO, W) went the next three for the win, allowing a run to score on five hits and two walks against two strikeouts. RHP John Sullivan (6.43, PO, S) picked up the save in the ninth after giving up a hit. DH Curtis Ledbetter (2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB, .391) had four hits in this game, LF Jose Graterol (.486) and C Nick Prosise (R, RBI, .303) had three each, and SS Dean Zorn (R, RBI, .286) and CF Greg Halman (3 RBI, .160) both had two.
Scottsdale Giants 11, Peoria Mariners 7 (twelve innings)Two blown saves and a loss for the pitchers. That has to hurt. RHP Scott Atchison (0.00) went another two innings and had a hit, a hit batter, a walk, and four strikeouts in that span. LHP Steve Uhlmansiek (6.75, E) went the next three frames and gave up a couple on a walk followed by a home run and a strikeout. RHP Toma Bonilla (6.92) blew the first opportunity, giving up a run on two hits (HR) and a strikeout in two innings, and LHP Estelin Soto (6.39, E) blew the second op, giving up a run on a hit, a wild pitch, and a walk in three frames of work. LHP Daniel Schwab (6.30, L) would be tagged with the extra-innings loss after giving up seven runs (four earned) on six hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and three walks against a strikeout in two innings. LF Greg Halman (HR, CS, 2 PO, .267) had another four hits for the offense, 3B Leury Bonilla (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .282) had three, and CF Donato Ruiz (R, RBI, .286) and RF Eddy Hernandez (2B, R, RBI, CS, PO, .333) had two each. SS Dean Zorn (3B, R, RBI, .250) had a triple.
Aguirre 0, Tronconero #2 3 (NYM) (seven+ innings)RHP Gerardo Esparza (2.33, L) went five innings, giving up three runs on six hits, a hit batter, and two walks against two Ks. P Edlando Seco (0.00) maintained his scoreless streak, walking two and striking out two in a couple of frames of work. With seventeen innings under his belt, he remains the only pitcher on the team that hasn’t been scored on yet. RF Nicomedes Gomez (.240) had a hit and two walks, but the offense wasn’t doing much in this one.
