Transaction Update (3/16/04):

Baseball America's latest transaction log says that the M's have recently signed C Stephen Morales to a minor league contract. It's not much, but it has been a while since we've seen any transaction listing over there.

Morales, 26, has had a rather unspectacular career, the high point coming in 2003 when he was invited to the White Sox camp during spring training. Either he's never hit enough to warrant a starting spot (his career minor league line of .235/.282/.355 suggests that's possible) or he's never stayed healthy enough to, seeing as how, even excluding his time in short-season leagues, he's only been in about 46 games per year for his career. He's probably the backup, or even the third catcher somewhere in the high minors this year. Nothing to write home about.

Transaction Update (3/14/05):

According to to tomorrow's Seattle PI notebook, among other sources, the Mariners have signed LHP Damien Moss to a minor league contract. In fact, they signed him over a month ago and just decided not to report it until someone on the ITP staff noticed.

Moss, 28, is perhaps best known for his involvement in Atlanta's deal for Russ Ortiz in the winter of 2002, then San Francisco's deal for Sidney Ponson seven and a half months later. If that's all you remember from his career, you're probably not alone, as he had a rather unfortunate fall from the face of the earth sometime after being traded to the Orioles, though he could be seen as a shadow of his former self in stops at Louisville (CIN), Durham (TB), and Tampa Bay. But back in 2002, he was a pretty good pitcher for the Braves, with a 12-6 record and a 3.46 ERA. Though he has had serious issues with consistency since being traded for the first time, he has decent potential. With the right coaching, he could have been an interesting addition to the mix for the rotation, if nothing else. As it stands, he's probably the backup plan in Tacoma and one of the guys most likely to be called up if the situation calls for it.
