  Game Recaps (7/2/05)

Colorado Springs 5 (COL), Tacoma 4
RHP Chris Buglovsky (4.91) gave up four runs on five hits and two hit batters with four strikeouts in six innings. RHP Sean Green (3.338) went the next two innings, walking one and a striking out two, but RHP Masao Kida (3.97) gave up the winning run after two hits and strikeout in the ninth. For the offense, 3B Justin Leone (2B, R, .274), C Ryan Christianson (HR, 3 RBI, .277), and DH Hunter Brown (2 2B, .284) had two hits apiece, while SS Yuniesky Betancourt (3B, R, .295) added a triple.

Frisco 6 (TEX), San Antonio 3
LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (4.64, L) gave up five runs (three earned) over six innings on seven hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against six Ks. Good to see those strikeouts coming back, even if he didn’t win. LHP Tim Rall (3.16) went the next two+ innings and allowed a run on one hit, as RHP Renee Cortez (4.37) let that runner cross the plate in the ninth after a ground out and a run-scoring wild pitch, followed later by a K. RF T.J. Bohn (HR, .294) had two hits, one of them leaving the park, and DH Jon Nelson (HR, .247) had the other home run for the Missions. LF Jaime Bubela (.289) continued his hitting streak, going 1-for-4 today.

Inland Empire 4, Bakersfield 13 (TEX)
RHP Mumba Rivera (8.76) had another ugly start, going two and two-thirds innings and giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits (HR) and two walks. RHP Chad Fillinger (12.15) gave up one of those and three of his own over the next inning and a third on four hits (2 HR!) and a walk against a K. LHP Derrick Ellison (9.00) made his debut and gave up three runs (two earned) in two innings on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (5.59) gave up a run on two hits and a K in the seventh, and then RHP Aaron Trolia (4.20) gave up a hit in the eighth, but was otherwise the only Sixers pitcher to come out of this without a jump in his ERA. RF Michael Nesbit (2B, .295) had two hits for the team, and CF Sebastien Boucher (2B, R, .143), LF Carlos Arroyo (2B, .363), and C Justin Ruchti (HR, 3 RBI, PB, E, .214) added extra-base hits. 3B Matt Rogelstad (R, .307) was 1-for-2 with two walks.

Wisconsin 6, Fort Wayne 2 (SD)
Well, I guess even LHP Casey Abrams (5.77, W) can have a good start, but the problem with that is that he’ll probably get more starts from here on out. Abrams went six and two-thirds innings and gave up two runs on seven hits, a wild pitch, and four walks with two Ks. RHP Ivan Blanco (3.91) threw a wild pitch, but got the final out in the seventh, and then RHP Craig James (0.88) pitched the final two, giving up one hit and striking out one. James still being in the Midwest League would be the other mystery of this game. C Robert Johnson (2B, R, RBI, .286) busted out with three hits tonight, something he hasn’t seemed to do for a while now. 3B Brandon Green (.212) and LF Brent Johnson (2B, R, RBI, .224) both had two hits, and RF Mike Wilson (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .254) had a home run and a walk.

Vancouver 7 (OAK), Everett 6
LHP Paul Fagan (4.26, E) took the hill tonight and gave up four runs on six hits (HR) and three walks against three Ks. RHP Joe Woerman (2.08) followed and pitched through the end of the eighth, giving up a run on a hit, a wild pitch, and a walk, while he punched out four. RHP Jeff Mault (6.75, L) would get the loss as he gave up two runs on two hits and two walks with one K in the ninth. DH Danny Santin (2B, RBI, .314) had two hits and seems to be coming around. 1B Jeff Flaig (2B, R, RBI, .353), C J.B. Tucker (2B, 2 RBI, .296), and RF Alex Gary (HR, .160) each had an extra-base hit.

Peoria Mariners 9, Mesa Cubs 10
Not really a good day for pitching, but in Arizona, few days are. RHP Miguel Marquez (6.43) went four innings and gave up five runs on three hits (HR) and three walks against three strikeouts. RHP Tyrone Lamont (4.00) went the next three innings and allowed two runs on three hits and a balk with three Ks, and then LHP Estelin Soto (5.40, L) lost it by giving up three runs on three hits and two walks against two Ks over the final inning and two-thirds. Yeah, that’s right the Cubs walked off with this one, and what’s worse is that the M’s rallied with three runs in the top of the same inning. 2B Juan Guzman (R, RBI, .312) and 1B Andy Hargrove (2B, R, .440) both had two hits, and RF Jose Graterol (3B, 2 R, .529) was 1-for-2 with three walks. Debuting in this game were SS Robert Hubson (2 R, 2 E, .000), a non-drafted FA who went 0-for-5, and DH Curtis Ledbetter (2B, .200), an 18th round pick in the recent draft.

Venoco #2 1 (BAL), Aguirre 5
LHP Kervin Montbrum (1.33) went five innings and allowed a run on four hits, a wild pitch, and three walks against six Ks. RHP Karlin Taylor (3.20) went the next three frames and gave up two hits and a walk while striking out two, and P Edlando Seco (0.00), on his fifteen inning without giving up a run, struck out one in the ninth. 2B Humberto Espinoza (HR, .320), 1B Gerardo Avila (2 R, .264), 3B/LF Rayon Lampe (2B, 2 R, .232) each had two hits for the offense.

  Game Recaps (7/01/05)

Colorado Springs 0 (COL), Tacoma 9
LHP Damian Moss (4.48, W) pitched six innings, allowing three hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and four walks while he struck out seven. RHP Clint Nageotte (0.00, S) had a hit and two walks and struck out four over the final three. Not taking his demotion lightly, 2B Jose Lopez (2 HR, 6 RBI, .302) clubbed not one, but two three-run home runs and walked once as well. SS Yuniesky Betancourt (2B, RBI, .296) had three hits from the leadoff spot, and C Wiki Gonzalez (R, PB, .330) and DH Greg Dobbs (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .455) both had two. 3B Justin Leone (2 R, .264) went 0-for-2, but walked twice.

Frisco 1 (TEX), San Antonio 2
LHP Thom Oldham (3.69, W) pitched well, going seven and a third innings and allowing the one run (unearned) by the Roughriders on seven hits, a hit batter, and two walks against two strikeouts. RHP R.D. Spiehs (0.75) was perfect through the last inning and two-thirds and struck out one. SS Adam Jones (3B, 2 R, SB, PO, .273) and 2B Ismael Castro (RBI, .252), the eight and nine hitters, had three hits apiece. 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (.256) had two hits. LF Jon Nelson (.247) was back in the lineup, but he went 0-for-3 with a walk. CF Jaime Bubela (.290) bumped his hitting streak up to twenty-one games.

Inland Empire 3, Bakersfield 1 (TEX)
LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.81, W), fresh off his all-star appearance, went six and two-thirds innings and allowed a run on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. RHP Mike Steele (3.50, S) came in for the rest of the way, giving up one hit and striking out two. 1B Bryan Lahair (HR, .271) and RF Michael Nesbit (2 RBI, 2 SB, .289) both had two hits, and C Justin Ruchti (2B, R, .212) had a double. That was Lahair’s eleventh home run on the season. CF Sebastien Boucher (.000) was hitless in his Cal League debut, but walked once.

Wisconsin 10, Fort Wayne 6 (SD)
RHP Jason Snyder (4.28) took it through five+ innings and allowed four runs on six hits (HR), a wild pitch, and a walk against three strikeouts. LHP Eric O’Flaherty (5.45) let one of those score, as he gave up a couple of hits in his two innings of work. RHP Cibney Bello (4.33) had a walk and a strikeout in his inning, but LHP Donny Langdon (13.50) got into trouble opening the ninth, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks while recording just one out. RHP Stephen Grasley (4.14, S) dug him out of that with only one of Langdon’s runners crossing the plate. Everyone in the Rattlers lineup had a hit tonight. Notably, 2B Yung-Chi Chen (2B, R, 2 RBI, SB, .292), DH Matt Tuiasosopo (2 R, RBI, SB, .289), and RF Chris Colton (3B, 2 R, RBI, .400), down from the Cal League, had two hits, and 1B Marshall Hubbard (HR, 2 RBI, .328) had his thirteenth home run.

Vancouver 5 (OAK), Everett 2
RHP Raphael Soriano (2.25) had another one-inning start, giving up two hits, balking, and striking out two. RHP Robert Rohrbaugh (1.59, L) followed for the next four and two-thirds innings and got the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and a wild pitch while striking out seven. I take it that Rohrbaugh is taking the rotation spot of RHP Marwin Vega (9.35), who allowed two runs on two hits, two wild pitches, a hit batter, and three walks against two Ks in an inning and two-thirds of work. LHP Rollie Gibson (3.00), who finished up that inning, threw two wild pitches to score one of the runs against Vega, but the fact is that the 18-year-old Columbian just hasn’t looked like the same pitcher since Jason and I saw him on opening night. RHP Edgar Guaramato (10.38) is also struggling to live up to early expectations of him, as he gave up a run on a couple of hits in the ninth, though I expect (hope) both will settle down soon. 1B Jeff Flaig (HR, 2 R, .367) had another strong performance, hitting his second home run and walking twice. RF Michael Saunders (2B, .200) added a double.

Aguirre’s box score wasn’t posted today.

Wisconsin: LHP Casey Abrams (cries), at Fort Wayne, @ 4:15 pm PT
Everett: LHP Paul Fagan, at Everett, @ 7:05 pm PT

  Game Recaps (6/29/05 and 6/30/05)

Colorado Springs 3 (COL), Tacoma 7
RHP Jeff Harris (2.43) went six innings and gave up a couple of runs on four hits (HR) and two walks with six Ks. RHP Jeff Heaverlo (5.95) gave up a run in the next inning on a pair of hits and a walk against a K, but on the whole it seems like he’s been pitching better of late. LHP Jared Thomas (4.24) walked two and struck out two in an inning and two-thirds, and then RHP Masao Kida (3.88, S) got the final out and the save. CF Jamal Strong (2B, R, .312) had three hits, DH Hunter Brown (2B, 2 RBI, .280) had two hits and two walks, and RF Chris Snelling (3 R, .367) had one hit and two walks. C Ryan Christianson (RBI, .269) walked three times, but didn’t have a hit.

Lookout Landing recently published an interview with Rainiers third baseman and all-around cool dude Justin Leone, so check it out.

San Antonio 2, Arkansas 3 (ANA)
LHP Bobby Livingston (2.87) went seven innings, allowing all three runs on seven hits, two wild pitches, two walks, and four strikeouts. It wasn’t really quite all that bad, as Jeremy mentions on the Sports and Bremertonians blog, a few of those hits should have been out, a couple of them to 3B Jesus Guzman (.278), whose defense hasn’t quite caught up to his bat. RHP R.D. Spiehs (0.87) had a hit and a strikeout in the ninth. 2B Eddie Menchaca (2B, .228) had a couple of hits, LF Jaime Bubela (2B, 2 R, CS, .293) had a double, and Guzman walked twice.

Frisco 7 (TEX), San Antonio 6 (eleven innings)
RHP Juan Sandoval (3.72) had the type of outing that one would commonly associate with him, going seven innings and allowing five runs on ten hits (HR) and a hit batter with six strikeouts. Walks have never been an issue, but those hits just keep on coming. RHP Emiliano Fruto (3.08) blew the save op in the next two innings, allowing a run on three hits with three Ks, but LHP Cesar Jimenez (3.15, L) blew the game after allowing a run on two hits and a walk against a K in the final two. 1B Nate Espy (2B, 3B, .286) and RF-1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (2B, 2 R, RBI, .251) both had three hits. That’s right, big ol’ Hoorelbeke playing in right and making a fine defensive play or two, from what I’ve heard. Bohn was scratched because he had his hand stepped on yesterday in Arkansas. No comment on that one. CF Gary Harris (R, .276), C Rene Rivera (RBI, .296), back in town, and DH Ismael Castro (SB, .242) had two hits apiece. LF Jaime Bubela (.290), meanwhile, extended his hitting streak to twenty games, tying him with Paul LoDuca and Adrian Myers for the longest hitting streak in the past seventeen years, when the current Missions owner bought the franchise.

Wisconsin 3, Quad Cities 9 (STL)
RHP Aaron Jensen (5.23, E, L) gave up all nine runs on seven hits (2 HR!) and two walks in just two and two-thirds. No inherited runners or anything, just a lot mistakes. RHP Roman Martinez (4.40) followed with two and a third innings where he had a hit, a walk, and a strikeout. LHP Donny Langdon (0.00) made his debut after that and had a hit and two strikeouts in the sixth, then RHP Stephen Grasley (4.19) struck out two over the final two frames. The offensive end of things saw RF Mike Wilson (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .258) with a two-run home run and SS Matt Tuiasosopo (RBI, .291) with two hits, but that was about it.

Wisconsin 4, Fort Wayne 3 (SD)
Throw a few more Ks in there and this would be the kind of performance I would expect out of LHP Julio Santiago (4.45, E, W), who went seven and two-thirds innings, scattering six hits and two walks while striking out three. RHP Ivan Blanco (3.97), eh, not so much (the wheels on my Free Ivan Blanco bandwagon have fallen off), as he gave up three runs on three hits (HR) in an innings of work before RHP Craig James (0.94) recorded the final out, albeit after giving up a hit and allowing one of Blanco’s runs to score. I had thought James was in Inland Empire with Sebastien Boucher, but I’ve had three sources confirming James with the save, so I guess it’s not a typo. DH Brandon Green (2B, R, 2 RBI, .206) led the offensive attack with three hits (that’s not a typo either), and 2B Oswaldo Navarro (2 RBI, CS, .276) had two while CF Jack Arroyo (2B, .230) doubled.

Everett 9, Spokane 5 (TEX)
RHP Nick Allen (4.09) went five innings this time and gave up four runs on a ten hits and a walk against two Ks. RHP Jon Lockwood (0.00) one-hit the Indians over the next three innings and punched out five, and then RHP Juan Colon (1.80) allowed a run on three hits and struck out two in the ninth. 1B Jeff Flaig (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .375) may be coming around this year, with three hits in this game, including his first home run. PH-CF Trevor Heid (2B, HR, .294) had two hits in three at-bats after coming in for CF Alex Gary (.222), who was pulled for unknown reasons. There were also notable performances from LF Casey Craig (3 R, 3 SB, .440), who was 1-for-3 with two walks and three stolen bases, C J.B. Tucker (HR, 3 R, .300), who had a home run and three walks, and C Danny Santin (2B, .286), who doubled and drove in a run.

Everett 3, Spokane 5 (TEX)
LHP Justin Thomas (5.62, PO, L) has moved into the rotation, no surprise there, though the results were a little disappointing at four runs on six hits, a wild pitch, a walk and four strikeouts in four innings of work. RHP Oliver Arias (3.60) went the next three innings, giving up three hits and striking out one, and LHP Lance Beus (4.50) pitched the final inning, giving up a solo home run and striking out one. There were no multi-hit games or extra-base hits by the Aquasox tonight (seems like the offense is a little streaky), so I’ll just throw out that SS Dean Zorn (R, .194), LF Casey Craig (R, RBI, .414), C J.B. Tucker (.304), and 1B Jeff Flaig (RBI, .357) all had a hit and a walk, and Tucker managed to walk twice. His initial signing didn’t particularly thrill me, but he’s done pretty well for himself.

Peoria Mariners 1, Phoenix Athletics 9
I guess I’m going to have to hold off on the “Promote Huang” campaign for a little while. RHP Chia-an Huang (4.91, L) went just four innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, a wild pitch, and three walks with just one strikeout. RHP Toma Bonilla (9.00) was solid through the next two, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out three, but LHP Jose Suriel (7.50) ran into some of the same trouble Huang did and gave up five runs on five hits and three walks over the final two frames. 2B Reed Eastley (2B, .625) and 1B Andy Hargrove (.429) both had a couple of hits, but there wasn’t much else going on for the offense.

Mesa Angels 3, Peoria Mariners 8
It took the M’s six pitchers and one huge inning to beat the Angels today. LHP Steve Uhlmansiek (16.20), still trying to build strength up, went one inning and had a walk and a strikeout. RHP Brett Bannister (2.25), RHP Juan Zapata (2.57), and RHP John Sullivan (9.00, W) split the next six innings, with Bannister giving up three unearned runs on three hits and striking out two, Zapata giving up two hits, and Sullivan allowing just one hit and striking out three. Two southpaws, LHP Worth Lumry (4.50) and LHP Daniel Schwab (4.50) took the last two, and Lumry had one K while Schwab gave up a hit and a walk. 2B Reed Eastley (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .667) had three more hits for the offense, CF Sam Bradford (3B, R, RBI, .214) and RF Donato Ruiz (R, .385) had two each, and LF Marquise Liverpool (2B, R, RBI, .167) and SS Leury Bonilla (3B, R, 2 RBI, .217) had extra-base hits.

Tronconero #2 5 (NYM), Aguirre 9
LHP Jose Escalona (1.06, W) was decent through five innings of work, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks against five strikeouts. RHP Carlos Sanchez (3.72) gave up two runs on two hits and a walk against two Ks over the next three innings, but things got a little tense from there. RHP Carlos Figueroa (108.00), who has struggled in extremely limited time this season, managed to record one out (K), but also allowed three walks and threw two wild pitches, which would lead to a run scoring against him after RHP Diomny Gaetano (0.00, S) came in and gave up a hit. Fortunately, Gaetano would record the final two outs without any further incident and the win was preserved. C Jair Fernandez (2 R, RBI, .329), once again, led the team with three hits. I’d suggest promoting him, but I’m not sure if there’s enough room in Peoria. I think that with Dixon, Fernandez, Robert Johnson, Santin, (Tucker?), and Clement on the horizon, catching has a chance to be a strength within the system in the next few years. LF William Ortiz (2B, 2 RBI, .296), SS Deybis Benitez (2B, 2 R, RBI, .153), and 3B Pablo Orfila (HR, 2 RBI, .213) each had an extra-base hit.

Aguirre 10, San Joaquin 7 (PIT)
RHP Gerardo Esparza (1.87, W) went six innings in this one, giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks with four Ks. LHP Hugo Castro (4.74) went the final three and allowed four runs to score on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts. For the offense, RF Greysom Berroterran (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .304) with four hits (and Aguirre’s only extra-base knock), C Franklin Tua (2 R, 2 RBI, .286) and 1B Gerardo Avila (3R, 255) had three, and 2B Humberto Espinoza (R, .313) and CF Edzul Robles (R, 2 RBI, SB, .227) had two.

I figure that we’re about due for another update for the DSL. The Santo Domingo M’s have gone 5-2 since last note and are currently tied for the division lead. OF Wellington Dotel (.414/.453/.917, 2nd in RBI (13), 1st in hits (29), T-1st in triples (2), T-1st in home runs (3)), IF Ogui Diaz (.375/.423/.521, T-2nd in runs (14)), and 1B Aramy Acevedo (.368/.469/.553) are still among the top four hitters in the division, though the top spot is no longer theirs. A new hitter has come on the scene lately in C Juan Beltran (.311/.360/.311), who is currently seventh in batting average. It’s a little surprising, considering he was one of the worst hitters on the team last season, but I’m not sure how long it will last because, as you can see, it’s not as if he’s hitting anything hard. LHP Eddy Fernandez (0.64) remains fourth in the ERA race, but has jumped up to second in strikeouts with thirty in 28.1 innings pitched. The rest of the pitching staff has been struggling a bit, with RHP Gregorio Rosario (3.21) seeming to take the brunt of that, but Rosario and Fernandez continue to have perfect records at 2-0, and RHP Richard Ortiz (1.69) is currently 3-0. Ortiz has been allowing more baserunners than the other two, however, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see his ERA jump a few points and his record to drop in the coming weeks.

  No recaps tonight

Well, at least not for a while, if at all.

I still have a transaction piece to finish, and my car breaking down this afternoon is leaving me hours behind on a lot of other things as well.

Refer to Lookout Landing instead. They'll probably have something up hours before I will.

Also, Jeremy of Sports and Bremertonians spent his afternoon watching the Missions vs Travelers game in Arkansas, and had his thoughts on that.

  Game Recaps (6/28/05)

Minor league sweep, and it’s not even particularly close. The M’s farm teams outscored their opponents 61 to 19.

Tacoma 14, Salt Lake City 3 (ANA)
LHP Andrew Lorraine (4.43, W) had another long start, going seven and two-thirds innings and allowing three runs on five hits (HR) and four walks against one K. RHP Michael Bumstead (4.95) had a hit and a strikeout over the last four outs. RF Chris Snelling (2 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, .368), back from his sore neck issue, 3B Justin Leone (2B, HR, .269), and 1B Aaron Rifkin (2B, 2 R, RBI, .250) had three hits apiece, and LF Scott Spiezio (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .333), C Wiki Gonzalez (R, 2 RBI, .326), and DH Hunter Brown (2B, 2 R, RBI, .273) had two each. SS Yuniesky Betancourt (2B, R, 2 RBI, .293) had a double.

San Antonio 7, Arkansas 6 (ANA) (eleven innings)
RHP Jon Huber (5.04) went the first five innings and was about average for him, giving up three runs on five hits (HR), a wild pitch, and a walk against four Ks. LHP Tim Rall (3.07) was less effective, going the next four innings and allowing three runs after four hits (2 HR!) and two walks against four Ks. Crazy note here, but Kendry Morales hit all three of those home runs, his first three in the league. LHP Cesar Jimenez (3.09) pitched the tenth inning, giving up two hits, and then RHP Renee Cortez (4.50, S) struck out one in the eleventh to get he save. This was kind of a team effort, in that a lot of the guys in the lineup were hitting, but they weren’t hitting often or very hard on the whole (no extra-base hits). LF Jaime Bubela (R, .292) and 3B Jesus Guzman (R, .279) both had two hits, but that’s been nothing out of the ordinary lately.

Wisconsin 11, Quad Cities 3 (STL)
The T-Rats finally won their first game of the second half! RHP Randy Frye (5.62, W) went six innings+ and gave up a couple of runs on five hits, a wild pitch, and four walks with two strikeouts. Of course, he opened the game with three runs already on the board, and four more by the third. RHP Stephen Grasley (4.35) came in with the bases loaded and only let one run score, and he was perfect through two innings and struck out a batter. RHP Craig James (0.95), of all people, allowed a run in the ninth on a solo home run. 1B Marshall Hubbard (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .332) had another three-hit game. Seriously, promote this guy now. James too. 3B Yung-Chi Chen (2B, 2 R, RBI, .296), RF Mike Wilson (2B, R, 2 RBI, SB, .258), and DH Brent Johnson (2B, 2 R, RBI, .225) had two hits apiece, and 2B Oswaldo Navarro (2B, R, RBI, .273) and LF Josh Womack (2B, RBI, .257) both doubled.

Everett 9, Spokane 3 (TEX)
RHP Rafael Soriano (0.00) had another rehab start and he went two innings, walking one and striking out four. RHP Eric Carter (3.00, W) followed him and was not quite so stellar this time, going four innings and allowing three runs on five hits (2 HR!), a wild pitch, and a walk with three Ks. LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (0.00) debuted with a perfect inning next, and then RHP Joe Woerman (0.00) walked two and struck out two in his first inning with Everett this season. RHP Cory Koliscak (0.00) had a hit, a walk, and a strikeout in the ninth. 2B Luis Valbuena (2B, R, .387), LF Casey Craig (3 R, 2 SB, .455), and DH Danny Santin (HR, 3 RBI, .304) each had three hits for the offense. 3B Bryan Sabatella (HR, 2 RBI, SB, .136) had two, but beyond those four, there was only one hit.

Peoria Mariners 15, Phoenix Brewers 2
LHP Harold Williams (3.00) gave up one run through five innings of work on three hits, two wild pitches, and two walks against six Ks. RHP Tyrone Lamont (3.00) followed and gave up an unearned on two hits, a walk, and two Ks in a couple of frames of work, and then LHP Estelin Soto (1.80) pitched the two after that, allowing a pair of hits and striking out three. 2B Reed Eastley (2R, RBI, .600), making his debut, and rehabbing LF Jon Nelson (3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .375) both had three hits, and RF Jose Graterol (R, 2 RBI, .533) had two. 1B Andy Hargrove (2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, .412) had a double and two more walks.

Aguirre 5, Universidad 2 (FLA-WAS)
RHP Ronald Uviedo (1.60) had a perfect game through six and a third innings, but then allowed a double and a home run, the sole mark against him for the day. He also struck out six in seven innings total. RHP Jorge Acosta (4.03, W) and RHP Diomny Gaetano (0.00, S) split the last two innings, with Acosta hitting one and striking out another and Gaetano walking one. 1B Gerardo Avila (HR, 2 R, 5 RBI, .245) and 2B Terry Serrano (R, .237) both had two hits, and reached safely once more, Avila via being hit and Serrano via a walk. Avila’s home run happened to be a grand slam in the ninth inning that won the game, and he’s become one of my favorite players of late. Not because he’s been exceptional or anything, but because I got a copy of the media guide and found out that he graduated from Dante Alighiri High School in 2003. Now there’s something you don’t often see in the states. In my mind, I can see a plaque hanging above the main entrance, “Abandon All Hope Ye Who Enter Here”.

  Game Recaps (6/27/05)

Tacoma 6, Salt Lake City 4 (ANA)
RHP Cha Seung Baek (4.06, W) went six innings and allowed three runs on five hits (HR), a walk, and three Ks. RHP Sean Green (3.86) followed for an inning and gave up a run on two hits and a walk. RHP Clint Nageotte (0.00) got into a little trouble after that, walking two and throwing a wild pitch while only recording one out, but RHP Masao Kida (3.90) dug him out and struck out one while he took it the rest of the way. 2B Ramon Santiago (2 R, .247) and SS Yuniesky Betancourt (3B, 2 RBI, .298) both had three hits, and CF Jamal Strong (3B, R, RBI, .308), C Wiki Gonzalez (HR, .326) and 1B Greg Dobbs (HR, 2 R, .444) had two each.

San Antonio 5, Arkansas 4 (ANA)
LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (4.66) went six and a third innings and gave up four runs on five hits (2 HR!) and three walks against four strikeouts, but RHP R.D. Spiehs (5.25, W) allowed one of those after a couple of hits in his inning and two-thirds. RHP Emiliano Fruto (3.02, S) struck out one to get the save in the ninth. LF Jaime Bubela (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .292) and SS Adam Jones (HR, .278) both had home runs in this one, and Bubela also walked with the bases loaded in the ninth to score the winning run. 3B Jesus Guzman (3B, R, .276) and DH Nate Espy (2B, 3B, .285) added two hits apiece.

Wisconsin 2, Quad Cities 7 (STL)
LHP Casey Abrams (6.08, L) only pitched an inning and two-thirds before getting the pulled tonight. Probably because he gave up four runs on three hits, two wild pitches, and four walks with one K. LHP Eric O’Flaherty (5.77, 2 E) went the next three and a third, and gave up an unearned run on a hit and three walks against two strikeouts. RHP Cibney Bello (4.43) pitched the final three frames and gave up a couple of runs after six hits, a hit batter, a walk, and two Ks. CF Sebastien Boucher (HR, .333) has been moved to third in the order and opened the game with a home run, but that lead was short lived, as we’re already well aware. 3B Yung-Chi Chen (2B, RBI, .295) and C Rob Johnson (2B, .286) both had doubles.

Everett 6, Spokane 8 (TEX)
LHP Paul Fagan (2.25) pitched four+ innings tonight, giving up three runs (two earned) after six hits, a wild pitch, and four walks against three Ks. LHP David Asher (0.00) took the next two innings, allowing a couple of hits and a walk while striking out four, and then RHP Jeff Mault (3.00) gave up a hit and struck out two in the two innings after that. RHP Edgar Guaramato (10.80, L) walked two to open the ninth and an error loaded the bases, got a called strikeout, but then there was another walk and the game-winning grand slam struck shortly after. 2B Luis Valbuena (3B, R, RBI, .333) had another three hits, and DH Danny Santin (R, .222) added two.

Surprise Royals 10, Peoria Mariners 5
RHP Miguel Marquez (9.00), a seventeen-year-old kid who made the jump directly from Venezuela without making a start there, went three innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks against five Ks. I don’t know anything about him, and his appearance on the roster was a bit of a surprise. LHP Daniel Schwab (6.00, L) went the next two innings and gave up a couple of runs on five hits (HR), a hit batter, a wild pitch, and two walks against two Ks. RHP Juan Zapata (3.60) followed him with another two innings, and two runs (one earned) scored after three hits, a hit batter, a walk, and two strikeouts. LHP Worth Lumry (6.00) had similar results in his one inning of work, except both runs were earned, he didn’t hit anyone, and he only had one K. RHP John Sullivan (15.00) had a walk and a strikeout in the ninth. For the offense, 2B Juan Guzman (3B, 2 R, E, .350), CF Tim Auty (2B, 2 R, .625), and 1B Kent Dixon (2B, 2 RBI, E, .571) had two hits apiece, but there was only one hit outside of those three. Auty also walked once and had two throws to nail a runner at home. I’m starting to like this guy.

I probably should also mention that I fixed some of the sidebar links a few days ago. Peoria and Everett stats are properly linked, and Peoria’s roster is via ITP. I did that roster myself, and it’s accurate as far as I know.

Ciudad Alianza 2 (BOS-SD), Aguirre 3 (eleven innings)
RHP Alfredo Venagas (1.55) had a killer start, going seven innings and allowing a run on four hits with five strikeouts, but it wasn’t quite enough for the win, and RHP Kelvin Alarcon (2.14) took it beyond regulation, going three and a third innings and giving up a run on three hits with one strikeout. LHP Jose Jimenez (3.86, W) walked one and struck out another, recording the final two outs for the win. There were no multi-hit performances in the game, but C Jair Fernandez (2B, RBI, .309) and SS Deybis Benitez (2B, .154) had doubles, and LF Miguel Pinto (HR, .275) had a home run in his only plate appearance. 2B Rayon Lampe (R, .236) walked in three times up at the plate to raise his OBP to .358.

Tomorrow’s Schedule:
Tacoma: LHP Andrew Lorraine, at Salt Lake City, @ 6:00 pm PT
San Antonio: RHP Jon Huber, at Arkansas, @ 5:10 pm PT
Inland Empire: All-Star Break
Wisconsin: RHP Randy Frye, at Quad Cities, @ 5:00 pm PT
Everett: RHP Eric Carter, at Spokane, @ 7:05 pm PT

  Game Recaps (6/26/05)

Tacoma 6, Salt Lake City 4 (ANA)
RHP Chris Buglovsky (4.78, W) went six and two-thirds and gave up four runs on six hits (2 HR!) and five walks against two strikeouts, so it could’ve been worse, especially considering RHP Jeff Heaverlo (5.88) let two of those score on the only hit he allowed in his inning and a third. Heaverlo also struck out one. RHP Masao Kida (4.02, S) gave up a hit and punched out one in the ninth to get another save. Still rehabbing (or is it re-rehabbing at this point?), 1B Scott Spiezio (2B ,HR, 2 RBI, .349) led the team with four hits in the game. SS Yuniesky Betancourt (HR, 2 RBI, .278) added another two hits and a walk, and RF Abraham Nunez (2B, R, RBI, .275) and 3B Justin Leone (2B, R, .253) had doubles.

San Antonio 7, Springfield 5 (STL)
LHP Thom Oldham (4.01) took the mound and went five and one-third innings, allowing five runs on nine hits (HR), two balks, a hit batter, and two walks with three strikeouts. LHP Chris Key (1.47) scored one of those runs, giving up two hits in the sixth without recording an out, but RHP R.D. Spiehs (1.17) only allowed a walk and struck out one over the next inning and a third to dig both pitchers out of further trouble. By the way, if you readers wouldn’t mind giving me a heads up periodically if I screw something up with guys like Spiehs, Asdrubal Cabrera, Fillinger, or Mumba Rivera, that would be terrific. I’m trying to individually calculate the stats for those guys based on the level/league they’re currently playing in, but every once in a while I just go into autopilot and copy down whatever number I have in front of me. LHP Cesar Jimenez (3.16) had a hit and a walk as well over the next inning, and RHP Renee Cortez (4.64, S) struck out one over the final four outs to pick up the save. DH Nate Espy (2B, R, .280) and CF Gary Harris (2B, 4 RBI, CS, .289) had three hits apiece for the Missions, and LF Jaime Bubela (R, SB, CS, .288), RF T.J. Bohn (2B, R, RBI, CS, .295), SS Adam Jones (2 2B, R, .286), and 2B Ismael Castro (HR, .243) had two each. 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, .271) and C Luis Oliveros (2B, E, .339)

It seems that the Sixers have released RHP Tanner Watson and LHP Miguel Martinez. Eh.

Quad Cities 11 (STL), Wisconsin 8
RHP Jason Snyder (4.12, L) took the first five innings and the loss, giving up eight runs on eight hits (2 HR!), a wild pitch, two hit batters, and two walks against three Ks, and RHP Ivan Blanco (2.91) pitched the last four, allowing three runs on six hits, a wild pitch, and a walk with six strikeouts. Ordinarily, I’d consider it distressing the Rick Ankiel has owned our pitching staff this year, but he’s hitting better than one would expect and for a great deal of power. 2B Yung-Chi Chen (R, RBI, .296), C Rob Johnson (R, .286), and 3B Brandon Green (R, 2 RBI, .196) had two hits apiece, and SS Oswaldo Navarro (HR, 2 R, .279) had solo home run and two walks. The T-Rats are currently winless in the second half.

Everett 4, Spokane 7 (TEX)
RHP Marwin Vega (9.00, L) had a rough outing, going just three innings and allowing six runs on two hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and four walks against three Ks. Vega couldn’t get an out in the fourth, so LHP Justin Thomas (2.25) pitched three innings after that, scoring three of Vega’s runs and allowing a run on three hits and striking out two. LHP Lance Beus (0.00) had two strikeouts and a wild pitch in the seventh, and RHP Juan Colon (0.00) had a walk and a strikeout in the eighth. SS Dean Zorn (2B, R, E, .333) led the team tonight with four hits, but his glovework is still shaky and he made his fourth error. 1B Jeff Flaig (R, .357) had a pair of hits and a couple of walks, and LF Casey Craig (2B, RBI, .429) also had a couple of hits and a throw to get a runner at second. C Danny Santin (2B, R, RBI, 2 PB, .154) had a double, but his defense wasn’t that great and he had two passed balls. I don’t really think this Aquasox team is as bad as they’ve looked defensively. Oh yeah, 2B Luis Valbuena (HR, .261) also smacked his second home run of the season.

Tomorrow’s Schedule:
Tacoma: RHP Cha Seung Baek, at Salt Lake City, @ 6:00 pm PT
San Antonio: LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith, at Arkansas, @ 5:10 pm PT
Inland Empire: All-Star Break
Wisconsin: LHP Casey Abrams, at Quad Cities, @ 5:00 pm PT
Everett: LHP Paul Fagan, at Spokane, @ 7:05 pm PT
Peoria: TBA, at Peoria, @ 10:30 am PT
Aguirre: TBA, at Aguirre, @ 8:00 am

Tacoma Rainiers: 43-33, .566, 1.5 GB in PCL Pacific North
San Antonio Missions: 3-1 (41-33), .750 (.554), 0.5 GB in TL West
Inland Empire 66ers: 2-4 (30-46), .333 (.395), 1 GB in CAL South

  Game Recaps (6/25/05)

Tacoma 0, Sal Lake City 10 (ANA)
LHP Damian Moss (4.86, PO, L) took the loss tonight, going four and two-thirds innings and allowing nine runs on ten hits and three walks against three strikeouts. LHP Jared Thomas (4.42) scored two of those runs and one more on three hits, a balk, two walks, and two Ks over the next two and third. RHP Clint Nageotte (0.00), back from Peoria and in the bullpen until further notice, struck out one in the eighth. 2B Ramon Santiago (.236) had two hits, but the offense was quite weak.

San Antonio 3, Springfield 2 (STL)
RHP Juan Sandoval (3.49, W) pitched quite well, going seven and two-thirds innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits (HR) with five strikeouts. LHP Tim Rall (2.49) got the final out of the eighth, and then RHP Emliano Fruto (3.08, S) finished the job by punching out two batters in the ninth. LF Jaime Bubela (SB, CS, .285), RF T.J. Bohn (RBI, .292), and C Luis Oliveros (2B, R, RBI, .352) each had two hits for the Missions, and 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, R, RBI, .272) and SS Adam Jones (2B, R, .200) had doubles.

Lake Elsinore 10 (SD), Inland Empire 5
LHP Ryan Feierabend (5.17, L) had the start and gave up six runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts in five innings. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (5.51) pitched the next inning and two thirds, giving up three hits and striking out one, and then RHP Chad Fillinger (10.13) gave up four runs on six hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk against three Ks over the final two and a third innings. C Justin Ruchti (2 HR, 3 RBI, .211) had two home runs and three hits overall to lead the team and finally get back above the Mendoza line. SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, R, RBI, .333) added two hits, and RF B.J. Garbe (2B, R, .267) doubled.

Quad Cities 13 (STL), Wisconsin 0
Ugly, just ugly, and all of the scoring in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. LHP Julio Santiago (5.84, L) gave up seven runs on eleven hits, two walks, and two strikeouts, but RHP Stephen Grasley (4.53) let two of those score and four of his own (two earned) over the next inning and two-thirds on five hits, two walks, a hit batter, and a strikeout. LHP Kendall Bergdall (4.13) gave up two runs on four hits against three strikeouts over the next three innings, but the good news is that it seems like he’s cutting back on the walks. RHP Roman Martinez (4.78) walked one and struck out one in the ninth. DH Marshall Hubbard (.330) and LF Jack Arroyo (2B, .230) had two hits apiece, but the offense wasn’t doing much with this one.

Boise 2, Everett 6
RHP Oliver Arias (5.14, PO) pitched the first five innings, allowing two runs on five hits (HR) and a walk against a couple of strikeouts, and RHP Jon Lockwood (0.00, W) took the last four along with the win, giving up just one hit and striking out one. Arias also picked off Jeremy Reed’s little brother at first. 2B Luis Valbuena (2B, HR, 3 RBI, .278) and CF Trevor Heid (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .143) could’ve won this on their own, but 1B Jeff Flaig (2B, .278) added a double and LF Casey Craig (R, CS, .400) was 1-2 with a walk.

Phoenix Brewers 8, Peoria Mariners 9 (eleven innings)
It was the supreme test of wills. The Mariners have had all of their box scores posted thus far, quite an accomplishment considering the league. The Brewers, on the other hand, had none of their boxes posted through the first three games. Who would come out on top? Well, turns out it was the M’s, but just barely. RHP Brett Bannister (4.50) gave up a solo home run and struck out three in his two innings of work, and then RHP Toma Bonilla (0.00, PO, E) had the defense struggle behind him, giving up five runs (none earned) after four hits, two hit batters, and a walk against four strikeouts in four innings of work. RHP Tyrone Lamont (3.00) was perfect through the next two innings, striking out three, and then RHP John Sullivan (22.50) allowed a hit in the eighth. LHP Jose Suriel (0.00, E, W) gave up two unearned runs in the ninth, blowing the save op, but pitched into the eleventh having only allowed two hits. A lot of two-hit nights for the offense, as 2B Juan Guzman (2 R, RBI, SB, E, .333), C Kevin Gergel (.133), 1B Andy Hargrove (R, RBI, E, .462), LF Donato Ruiz (R, .300), and DH Jairo Hernandez (HR, .375) each had two hits. CF Sam Bradford (3B, R, RBI, .286) and SS Leury Bonilla (3B, R, E, .200) added triples, and 3B Ronnie Prettyman (.200) was 1-for-5 with a walk in his debut.
