Mariner Minors
9/2-9/3
Sacramento 2 (OAK), Tacoma 7
LHP Craig Anderson (5.65, W), in his second start since coming back, went five and third innings, giving up two runs on six hits, a hit batter, and two walks against four strikeouts. RHP T.A. Fulmer (0.00), being bumped up a level again, pitched the final three and a third and gave up just a hit and two walks while striking out three. CF Jeremy Reed (R, RBI, .302) had two hits, while 2B Mickey Lopez (HR, 2 RBI, .285), 1B A.J. Zapp (HR, 3 RBI, .295), and RF Elpidio Guzman (2B, R, .265) provided a little power to the cause.
Tucson 2 (ARI), Tacoma 8
RHP Gustavo Martinez (4.87, W) went six innings without allowing an earned run, five hits, a hit batter, five walks, and five strikeouts. RHP Jared Hoerman (5.07, S) pitched the last three innings to pick up his first Triple-A save, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out two. LF Greg Jacobs (R, 3 RBI, .316) had three hits on the night, while CF Jeremy Reed (2B, HR, 2 RBI, .304) and 2B Mickey Lopez (3B, R, .286) had two apiece. Some isolated extra-base hits came courtesy of 1B A.J. Zapp (2B, 2 R, .294), DH Ryan Christianson (2B, R, RBI, .259), and C Rene Rivera (2B, R, .250), who is replacing Pat Borders for the rest of the season.
Round Rock 1 (HOU), San Antonio 8
RHP Rich Dorman (3.48, W) went five innings and allowed a run on two hits and three walks against three strikeouts. LHP Chris Key (4.05) finished off the game, allowing one hit and striking out two. The two through five hitters did most of the damage, with 3B Hunter Brown (HR, .278) going 1-3, RF Shin-Soo Choo (HR, 3 R, SB, .308) going 2-4, 1B John Lindsey (2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .282) going 3-4, and CF T.J. Bohn (Hr, .262) going 1-4. C Brian Moon (2B, .170) also added a double.
Round Rock 13 (HOU), San Antonio 6
LHP Phil Devey (4.76, L) got burned again, giving up seven runs on seven hits and three walks against four strikeouts in just three innings. LHP Jared Thomas (3.75) went the next inning, and gave up two runs on two hits (HR) and two walks with one strikeout. RHP Renee Cortez (4.41) pitched the fifth and sixth, allowing a run on four hits, a wild pitch, and two walks against two strikeouts, then LHP Tim Rall (4.71) ran into even more trouble over the next two frames, with three runs on four hits (2 HR!) and three walks while striking out one. RHP Aaron Taylor (2.97) was the one pitcher to get through his stint without giving up a run, allowing one walk and striking out one. This time it was the two through six hitters, 3B Hunter Brown (4-5, HR, 2 R, .284), RF Shin-Soo Choo (3-5, 2B, R, .311), 1B John Lindsey (2-4, 2 2B, R, 2 RBI, .283), CF T.J. Bohn (2-5, 2B, R, .265), and DH Jaime Bubela (1-4, HR, 3 RBI, .230), who did all the damage.
Inland Empire 4, Lancaster 12 (ARI)
LHP Bobby Livingston (3.57, L) had a very uncharacteristic start, going five innings and allowing seven earned runs on nine hits (HR) and a walk against three strikeouts. RHP Greg Wear (11.57) went the next two innings and put the game further out reach by giving up four runs on six hits (HR) while striking out one. LHP Melvin Pizarro (4.03) gave up one hit in the eighth. 2B Juan Gonzalez (2B, E, .296), 1B Matt Rogelstad (2 R, .250), and SS Michael Garciaparra (2B, R, RBI, .213) contribute two hits each. RF Wladimir Balentien (HR, 2 RBI, .273) had his first homer in advanced-A and walked once as well. C Matt Hagen (PB, .234) had a passed ball and was 0-3 before being pulled for Lentz.
Rancho Cucamonga 1 (ANA), Inland Empire 6
RHP Jon Huber (6.12, W) got back on track by going six innings and allowing one earned run on five hits, a hit batter, and a walk while striking out seven. LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.24, S) picked up a three-inning save, allowing one hit and striking out three. 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, R, 2 RBI, .305) and LF Jon Nelson (2B, 2 RBI, .304) had two hits apiece, 2B Juan Gonzalez (2B, 2 R, .296) and SS Michael Garciaparra (2B, R, .213) doubled.
Wisconsin 7, Peoria 20 (STL)
Games like this make me look forward to the end of the season. LHP Casey Abrams (12.74, L) got an ill-advised starting debut, and gave up eight runs on ten hits (HR), a hit batter, and two walks with two strikeouts in just an inning and two-thirds. Ouch. RHP Chad Fillinger (7.62) went the next three and third innings, giving up two runs on five hits, a hit batter, a walk, and a strikeout. LHP Michael Ciccotelli (5.63) only got two outs after that, eventually allowing three earned runs on four hits and a walk with one strikeout. RHP Matt Tindell (10.80) went the next four outs and gave up four runs on four hits (HR), a hit batter, a wild pitch, and two walks against two strikeouts. RHP Kenly Chang (5.55) was the only one to not run into trouble, striking out one in the eighth. SS Adam Jones (2B, R, 3 RBI, .264) had another three hits, CF Josh Womack (2B, 3 R, SB, .260), DH Nick Orlandos (2 RBI, .300), and 3B Eric Blakeley (2B, R, .283) had two each. 2B Michael Cox (2B, 2 RBI, E, .232) doubled, but his error was what cost the T-Rats a large number of those runs.
Fort Wayne 13 (SD), Wisconsin 2
Ditto for this game. RHP Bryan Stitt (4.63, L) gave up six runs on FOURTEEN hits, two hit batters, a walk, and two strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings. RHP Ruben Castillo (9.75) got through two more outs, striking out one of the batters, but would give up six runs on two hits (HR), a hit batter, and three walks. Half of those runs were scored after RHP Kenly Chang (5.40, E) came in, though he only allowed one hit and an unearned run in an inning and two-thirds. RHP Austin Bilke (3.75) struck out one in the ninth.
Salem-Keizer 10 (SF), Everett 2
Remember the bad blood I was talking about before? It’s all right here. RHP Phil Cullen (2.97, L) had little control in his two innings, giving up four runs on four hits, a hit batter, and two walks with one strikeout. LHP Shawn Nottingham (3.15) was brought in for a two-inning relief stint, and looked brilliant (the cutter was as nasty as I’ve seen it), giving up one hit and a wild pitch while striking out two. After that, RHP Roman Martinez (2.45) went an inning and two-thirds, giving up two runs on three hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk. LHP Kendall Bergdall (6.55) finished up the game, giving up four runs on five hits, a hit batter, a balk, a wild pitch, and two walks. Bergdall’s hit batter was retaliation, plain and simple, as by that time, four Aquasox had been hit. The benches cleared momentarily, then one of the Volcanoes players, who wasn’t even playing tonight, was ejected after they returned to their respective dugouts. 2B Oswaldo Navarro (R, .267) and 1B Brandon Green (2B, RBI, .270) both had two hits, but the award for this one goes to LF Trevor Heid (2B, RBI, .213), who didn’t even make an out. Why? Because he was hit twice (showing the umpire the welt on his arm to get the base on one instance; the umps in this game were rather inept), walked once, and doubled the only other time up. 3B Yung-Chi Chen (.296) gets bonus points for making the pitcher fall off the mound trying to catch up with his bunt base hit.
Everett 8, Salem-Keizer 1 (SF)
RHP Jason Snyder (2.23, W) had his best outing yet, going seven innings and allowing a run on two hits (HR) while striking out eight. Must’ve been all the notes he was taking behind the plate the day before. RHP Cibney Bello (4.09) went the next inning, striking out a batter, then RHP Mark Lowe (4.93) finished up by allowing a hit, throwing a wild pitch, and ringing up a batter. DH Thomas Hubbard (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, CS, .271) was 4-4 with a walk, while 1B Brandon Green (2B, 2 R, RBI, .272) and 2B Asdrubal Cabrera (R, RBI, .271) had two hits. 3B Yung-Chi Chen (2B, R, .295), RF Mike Wilson (2B, 3 RBI, .248), and SS Oswaldo Navarro (2B, .267) all doubled.

8/31-9/1
Sacramento 2 (OAK), Tacoma 3
LHP Bryan Ward (4.17) went seven strong innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and a wild pitch against four strikeouts. After that, RHP Jared Hoerman (5.34) edged his way out of trouble, keeping the final two innings scoreless, but giving up two hits, three walks, and striking out one in the process. The offense came almost entirely via the bat of C Jim Horner (2B, 3 RBI, .193) in the bottom of the ninth, but someone had to be on base before that to drive in so give some credit to CF Jeremy Reed (2B, R, .306) too.
Sacramento 7 (OAK), Tacoma 4
RHP John Kelly (7.36, L) made his starting debut for the Rainiers, though he didn’t fare well, going three innings and allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five. LHP Randy Williams (3.33) took the next three, giving up a run on two hits (HR) and a walk pitch against two strikeouts, and then RHP Bill Simas (4.82) held the River Cats to one hit over the next two frames and struck out three. RHP Tony Runion (3.86), who had been near automatic to this point, gave up four runs on four hits (HR) and a walk against one strikeout in the ninth. RF Greg Jacobs (2B, R, RBI, .308) had 4-4 night, but perhaps more interesting was 1B A.J. Zapp’s (HR, 2 R, .294) two hits, which included a home run over the centerfield wall that measured 505 feet, then rolled another eighty into the parking lot. An alert reader notes that this was the first time such a thing had happened in the history of Cheney Stadium, and this particulr feat earned Zapp $20 from manager Dan Rohn.
Tulsa 4 (COL), San Antonio 6
RHP Felix Hernandez (3.30, W) has gone back to ripping up the league, going five innings and allowing a run on three hits and two walks while punching out eight. RHP Aaron Taylor (3.06) went the next two and gave up a run on two hits with a strikeout. LHP Chris Key (4.22) went for an inning and two-thirds, but ran into some trouble with two hits and wild pitch that turned into two runs, though RHP Rick Guttormson (3.11, S) gave up a double to score one of those before striking out the 27th man. RF Shin-Soo Choo (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, SB, .309) and CF T.J. Bohn (HR, .263) both had two hits on the night, and 3B Hunter Brown (2B, R, .278) also doubled.
Tulsa 3 (COL), San Antonio 1
RHP Chris Buglovsky (3.64) started and went five innings, allowing a run on five hits, a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a walk against three strikeouts. RHP Emiliano Fruto (5.45, L), finally getting in some extended work, didn’t impress much by giving up a run on two hits and a walk against two strikeouts in his three innings. LHP Jared Thomas (3.49) had the same basic results in his one inning, minus the walk and plus a balk. CF T.J. Bohn (2B, .262) doubled, but that was about it.
Inland Empire 7, Lancaster 5 (ARI)
LHP Thom Oldham (3.75, E, W) pitched eight innings for the win, allowing four earned runs on nine hits (2 HR!), a hit batter, and a wild pitch while he struck out eight. RHP Darwin Soto (3.15, S) got another save with a strikeout in the ninth. CF Gary Harris (3B, 3 R, .281) and 3B Jesus Guzman (2 2B, R, RBI, .306) both had four hits, while RF Wladimir Balentien (2B, R, .333), whose arm must be decent enough if they’re having him play right in a playoff hunt, had two. 1B Matt Hagen (2B, R, .232) also doubled and walked.
Inland Empire 4, Lancaster 8 (ARI)
RHP Juan Sandoval (4.12, L) has an 11-11 record. Are we surprised? In this game he went five and a third innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits (HR) and two walks against three strikeouts. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (3.75) went the next inning and two-thirds, and though he wasn’t involved in any of Sandoval’s runs scoring, he did give up one of his own after two hits and a walk while he struck out three. RHP Mike Steele (4.78) gave up a hit and a walk in the ninth. CF Gary Harris (HR, 2 RBI, .284) had three hits on the night, while 1B Matt Hagen (2B, R, .236) and C Gregory Slee (R, .167) had two. 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, R, .305) and LF John Nelson (3B, .305) also provided a little power.
Wisconsin 1, Peoria 7 (STL)
The T-Rats couldn’t buy a win… LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.91) went six and a third innings, giving up five runs on seven hits (HR), a wild pitch, and two walks against four strikeouts. RHP Austin Bilke (3.91) went the next two-thirds and gave up a run after a hit batter and two hits. RHP Matt Tindell (4.91) pitched the eighth and hat a hit and a strikeout to show for it. CF Josh Womack (3B, R, .258) and LF Bryan Lahair (2B, .286) both had two hits.
Wisconsin 2, Peoria 5 (STL)
LHP Ryan Feierabend (3.63) was pretty solid through seven innings, giving up just one run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Things ended up falling apart after RHP Ruben Castillo (5.56) came in and went two-thirds of an inning, striking out a batter, but gave up a hit and a walk, which would lead to two runs. RHP Mike Hrynio (3.66) got the final out in that inning, but before that, he walked a batter and gave up a grand slam. SS Adam Jones (2B, RBI, .260) broke out with three hits, but that was it.
Salem-Keizer 9 (SF), Everett 7
Hmm… well, RHP Aaron Jensen (5.16, L) only got through an inning and two-thirds, giving up three earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two. LHP Brandon Perry (7.18) came in next with an earned run on two hits and two wild pitches with four strikeouts in two innings. After that, RHP Cibney Bello (4.22) went an inning and a third, with a hit, a walk, and a strikeout to show for it. RHP Brad Rose (1.69) pitched the next inning and two-thirds and would give up a run on four hits and a walk. Then the ball went to LHP Kendall Bergdall (6.27) who gave up two hits over the course of four outs. RHP Roman Martinez (0.00) walked a batter, hit a batter, and struck out one in his inning of work. There were four hit batters overall in the game, a sign of things to come and general bad blood developing between the two teams. 3B Yung-Chi Chen (2 R, 2 RBI, 2 SB, .295) had two hits, while CF Brent Johnson (2B, R, .301) and 2B Oswaldo Navarro (2B, 2 R, RBI, .265) both doubled.
Salem-Keizer 13 (SF), Everett 3 (eight innings)
RHP Mumba Rivera (3.51, L) went four and a third innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk against five strikeouts. RHP Terry Forbes (4.50) came in for the next inning and two-thirds and gave up three run, though none were earned, after five hits and a strikeout. LHP Vance Hall (6.06) pitched the last two and gave up an earned run on three hits, two wild pitches, and a walk against two strikeouts. Again, two hit batters in this game. CF Brent Johnson (2B, R, RBI, .300) and RF Elvis Cruz (2B, R, .202) both doubled.
POTM, completed as of last night, up sometime this weekend.

Tacoma Rainiers, for the week of 8/24-8/30
Tacoma 4, Portland 7 (SD) (8/24/04)
RHP Gustavo Martinez (4.79, L) was off again, going five and two-thirds innings and giving up six runs on seven hits (HR) and four walks against three strikeouts, though to be fair, LHP Tim Christman (4.54, E) did give up two of those runs and one of his own after three hits and a walk in the process of getting the final strikeout of the inning. RHP Jared Hoerman (5.17) pitched the final two innings, allowing up two hits, throwing a wild pitch and giving out a free pass while striking out one. RF Elpidio Guzman (R, SB, CS, .270), DH Ryan Christianson (2B, R, RBI, .274), and 3B Greg Dobbs (2B, RBI, .294) had two hits apiece, while the recently traded C Pat Borders (2B, R, .256) doubled.
Portland 2 (SD), Tacoma 3 (eight innings) (8/26/04)
LHP Bryan Ward (4.55) got the start and went six and a third innings, with a run on two hits (HR) and three walks against four strikeouts. RHP Bill Simas (7.71) couldn’t get an out after that, with a run on two hits (HR) and a walk, but then LHP Randy Williams (3.44, W) held the Beavers to one hit and striking out two over the last inning and two-thirds. 1B A.J. Zapp (2B, HR, 3 R, .296) was 2-2 with a couple of walks and scored all of the Rainiers’ runs, but DH Ryan Christianson (2B, .273) also doubled.
Portland 3 (SD), Tacoma 2 (seven innings) (8/26/04)
RHP Jeff Harris (4.85) went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits, a wild pitch and two walks against two strikeouts. RHP John Kelly (7.84, L) pitched the last two and gave up a run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. The offense came entirely via the solo shots by RF Elpidio Guzman (HR, .267) and 3B Greg Dobbs (HR, .293).
Portland 6 (SD), Tacoma 3 (8/27/04)
LHP Travis Blackley (3.83, L) started his last game at least for the year, pitching five and two-thirds innings and giving up five runs on ten hits and four walks against just one strikeout. RHP Jared Hoerman (5.30) struck out the last batter of that inning, but then opened up the seven by giving up three straight hits, which would lead to a run. LHP Tim Christman (4.29) came in for the next two innings and shut the offense down, giving up a walk and striking out one, then RHP Tony Runion (1.04) walked two and struck out one in the ninth. Notables on offense were RF Elpidio Guzman (2B, RBI, .267) and 1B A.J. Zapp (2B, RBI, .296) for their shows of power and CF Jeremy Reed (2 R, SB, .303) for scoring both times he got on base.
Portland 6 (SD), Tacoma 3 (8/28/04)
Second verse, same as the first… LHP Craig Anderson (5.79) edged out of trouble in his four innings, giving up three hits, hitting a batter, and walking five more without a run scoring. RHP John Kelly (7.71) went for the next four outs and ended up giving up a run after a hit, a walk, and a strikeout. LHP Tim Christman (4.66) came in after that, going an inning and allowing two runs on three hits (HR) and striking out a batter. RHP Bill Simas (7.11) would pitch the next inning and two-thirds, giving up a run on two hit s and a hit batter with one strikeout. RHP Jared Hoerman (5.53) continued the bullpen woes by giving up two runs on three hits in the ninth. 2B Mickey Lopez (2 R, .288) had two hits, while CF Jeremy Reed (2B, .304), DH Ryan Christianson (2B, R, .274), C Pat Borders (3B, RBI, .250), and LF Josh Ellison (2B, .200), who had recently been promoted, each had an extra-base hit.
Portland 7 (SD), Tacoma 0 (8/29/04)
The hits just keep on coming… quite literally, as RHP Gustavo Martinez (5.21, L) gave up thirteen of them (2 HR!), plus a wild pitch and two walks while striking out four in five innings of work. All of Portland’s runs for the game were credited to him. LHP Randy Williams (3.35) went the next two innings giving up a hit, hitting a batter, and striking out two, then RHP Tony Runion (0.84) went the last two and struck out three. CF Jeremy Reed (3B, .308) and C Pat Borders (2B, .258) both had two hits.
Sacramento 8 (OAK), Tacoma 4 (8/30/04)
RHP Brett Evert (13.50) had a rather unlucky debut, going two and two-thirds innings and allowing four earned runs on four hits (HR) and six walks against two strikeouts. RHP Jeff Harris (4.79) went two and two-thirds innings after that, giving up a run on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts, then LHP Tim Christman (4.58) came in for yet another two and two-thirds, and allowed a run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. RHP Bill Simas (6.14) gave up a hit in the ninth. DH Ryan Christianson (HR, 2 RBI, .276) had two hits on the night, while RF Elpidio Guzman (2B, R, .265) doubled and 1B A.J. Zapp (R, .295) was 1-2 with a couple of walks.

San Antonio Missions, for the week of 8/24-8/30
Wichita 5 (KC), San Antonio 0 (8/25/04)
RHP Juan Done (5.34, L) ran into some hard luck again, pitching six and a third innings and giving up three earned runs on seven hits (HR), a hit batter, and three walks with two strikeouts on a night where the offense couldn’t do anything right. LHP Tim Rall (4.60) pitched the next inning, and then RHP Emiliano Fruto (5.63) was perfect through two-thirds. After that, RHP Aaron Taylor (3.06) gave up a run on a hit, a wild pitch, and a walk in the ninth. RF Shin-Soo Choo (.311) had two hits, C Brian Moon (2B, .156) doubled, and both walked once, but that was pretty much all there was to it.
Wichita 0 (KC), San Antonio 1 (seven innings) (8/26/04)
RHP Felix Hernandez (3.44, W) three-hit Wichita over seven innings, walked two, and struck out seven. Think he’s figured out the league yet? On offense, C Brian Moon (3B, .161) tripled and RF Shin-Soo Choo (2 SB, .312) combined a single with two stolen bases.
Wichita 1 (KC), San Antonio 2 (8/26/04)
LHP Chris Key (4.10, E), swingman extraordinaire, went six innings and gave up a run on six hits, a wild pitch, and two strikeouts. RHP Jared Thomas (3.19) went the next inning and two-thirds, giving up two hits and striking out two, and RHP Rick Guttormson (3.23, W) wrapped up the game with a hit, a walk, and two strikeouts. 2B Rob Gandolfo (3B, R, .226) had another two hits as the offense continued to just barely squeak by.
Wichita 3 (KC), San Antoino 1 (8/27/04)
RHP Chris Buglovsky (3.72, L) went five innings, allowing three runs after five hits (HR) and two walks versus four strikeouts. After that, the bullpen didn’t give the Wranglers a chance. RHP Renee Cortez (4.60) gave up one hit in his two innings, LHP Tim Rall (4.53) struck out one in the eighth, and RHP Aaron Taylor (2.97) gave up a hit and a walk in the ninth. Unfortunately, the offense couldn’t get a break either. RF Shin-Soo Choo (SB, .311) and DH Jaime Bubela (2B, R, .222) both had two hits, but that was pretty much it, save for 1B John Lindsey (.281) going 1-2 with a couple of walks.
Wichita 2 (KC), San Antonio 3 (8/28/04)
RHP Rich Dorman (3.56) wasn’t up to his usual trick, but no one could touch him anyway. He went three and two-thirds, gave up five hits, walked six, and struck out three, but no runs ever came of it. LHP Tim Rall (4.49) pitched the next two-thirds of an inning, and then RHP T.A. Fulmer (5.58) gave up two hits and struck out one in the next four outs. LHP Jared Thomas (3.60) was the only one to run into trouble, giving up two runs on a hit (HR) and two walks against a strikeout over two frames. After that, RHP Emiliano Fruto (5.60, W) got one out, and RHP Rick Guttormson (3.18, S) got the last three after a hit and a strikeout. LF/CF Dustin Delucchi (2B, .277) and C Brian Moon (2B, R, .170) doubled, and RF Shin-Soo Choo (2 RBI, .311) drove in two.
Tulsa 0 (COL), San Antonio 4 (8/29/04)
LHP Phil Devey (4.03, W) returned from Athens with his “A” game, going seven innings and scattering three hits and two walks while striking out five. RHP Renee Cortez (4.41) came in for the final two innings, gave up a hit and a walk and punched out two. CF T.J. Bohn (2B, R, .251) broke out of a little slump with two hits, but LF Dustin Delucchi (Hr, 277), 1B John Lindsey (HR, .281), and DH Jaime Bubela (HR, 2 RBI, .227) all homered.
Tulsa 2 (COL), San Antonio 5 (8/30/04)
RHP Juan Done (5.21, W) went seven strong innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. RHP Emiliano Fruto (5.57) got the next batter out after hitting one, then LHP Tim Rall (4.43) took on the next two and struck out one of them. RHP Rick Guttormson (3.13, S) had a hit and a strikeout in the ninth. 3B Hunter Brown (R, RBI, .278) and CF T.J. Bohn (2B, R, 2 RBI, .258) both had two hits, while 1B John Lindsey (HR, .281) went yard yet again.

Inland Empire Sixty-Sixers, for the week of 8/24-8/30
Rancho Cucamonga 4 (ANA), Inland Empire 1 (8/24/04)
LHP Thom Oldham (3.54, L) pitched decently enough in his six innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits (HR) and a walk against eight strikeouts, but when Troy Glaus is the guy that’s beating you, I guess that takes some of the edge off. RHP Mike Steele (5.60) pitched the seventh, giving the old one hit, one walk, one K performance, then things got a little wild when RHP Greg Wear (9.24) came in for an inning, walked two, and threw a wild pitch, though he would strike out two batters. Speaking of strikeouts, LHP Miguel Martinez (5.62), making one of his very few August appearances, knocked out the side in the ninth. 1B Matt Hagen (2B, RBI, .227) logged three hits on the night, while RF Carlos Arroyo (R, .324) and DH Josh Ellison (.390) had two each. 3B Jesus Guzman (.295), on-base machine that he is, walked twice.
Rancho Cucamonga 4 (ANA), Inland Empire 9 (8/25/04)
RHP Rett Johnson (4.85) started this one, though he didn’t fare so well, going four innings and giving up four runs on four hits, a wild pitch, four walks, and a strikeout. RHP Jon Huber (4.56, W) went next three innings, one hit, four strikeouts, and eventually picking up the win. LHP Melvin Pizarro (4.14) walked two and struck out one in the eighth, and then LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.41) gave up a hit in the ninth. The offense did well in digging Rett out, as six batters, CF Gary Harris (R, 2 RBI, 2 SB, CS, .277), 2B Juan Gonzalez (RBI, .299), 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, R, 2 RBI, .296), 1B Matt Hagen (2 2B, R, RBI, .230), DH Matt Rogelstad (3B, 2 R, RBI, .249), and SS Michael Garciaparra (2 R, RBI, .201), all had two hits apiece. LF Jon Nelson (2B, RBI, E, .301) also doubled.
San Jose 1 (SF), Inland Empire 7 (8/27/04)
RHP Juan Sandoval (3.87, W) had his switch turned to “brilliant” in this game, going eight innings, giving up one run, scattering three hits, walking three, and striking out six. LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.38) pitched the ninth, giving up two hits, which is rather unusual, and striking out two, which is rather common. 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, 3B, R, 3 RBI, .300) was on a rampage, coming just a home run short of the cycle, but that should in no way detract from the performance of 2B Juan Gonzalez (2 R, 2 RBI, 3 SB, .302), who was 2-3 with a couple of walks. Others with two hits were LF Jon Nelson (SB, .302), RF Carlos Arroyo (HR, .326), and SS Michael Garciaparra (2B, 3 R, .208).
San Jose 0 (SF), Inland Empire 5 (8/28/04)
Ahem, LHP Bobby Livingston (3.32, W), complete game three-hitter, one hit batter, six Ks. ‘Nuff said. DH Carlos Arroyo (2B, 2 RBI, CS, .330) had another three hits, CF Gary Harris (2 R, .276) had two, and 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, 2 RBI, .300) doubled and continues to lead the system in that category. RF Wladimir Balentien (RBI, E, .333) returned from the Olympics with a promotion, and went 1-3 with a walk and no strikeouts.
San Jose 15 (SF), Inland Empire 3 (8/29/04)
RHP Jon Huber (7.18, L) took a thrashing, giving up nine runs on eleven hits (2 HR!) against two strikeouts in just two and two-thirds innings. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (3.72) made his return after that, going two and a third innings and giving up three hits, hitting a batter, and striking out three. RHP Mike Steele (4.97) went the next two frames, allowing a hit, plunking a batter, and punching out two, then things got bad again. RHP Greg Wear (11.08), who is becoming a bit of an inside joke in and of himself, gave up six runs on five hits (HR) and a walk against two strikeouts in just two-thirds of an inning. That home run? A grand slam. RHP Darwin Soto (3.20) finished up the game after that, giving up a hit and striking out a batter overall. In the two-hit club for this one were LF Jon Nelson (2B, .302) and RF Wladimir Balentien (R, .429), though there wasn’t much action beyond that.
Inland Empire 8, Lancaster 5 (ARI) (8/30/04)
RHP Rett Johnson (5.29) had another shaky start, going four innings and allowing three earned runs on eight hits, a wild pitch, and two walks with three strikeouts. LHP Melvin Pizarro (4.09, W) went three innings after that with a run on three hits (HR) and a walk against four strikeouts. LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.32, S) was a little off in the last two, giving up four hits, a wild pitch, and a walk, but he struck out three overall and successfully closed the game.
Tacoma Rainiers: 73-54, .575, 1st in PCL North
San Antonio Missions: 59-66, (29-26, 2nd half) .472 (.527), 1.5 GB in TL West

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, for the week of 8/24-8/30
Wisconsin 3, Quad Cities 2 (MIN) (eleven innings) (8/24/04)
RHP Brandon Moorhead (3.27) pitched another eight innings and gave up both of the runs on five hits, a balk, and two walks with another seven strikeouts. Ho hum, right? RHP Mike Hrynio (3.43, W) pitched the next three innings with a hit, two walks, and five strikeouts to show for it. DH Nick Orlandos (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .301) did his thing with another three hits, while SS Adam Jones (2B, R, .264) had two. Orlandos’ homer also gave the T-Rats the lead in the eleventh, and it was his first one of the year too.
Wisconsin 1, West Michigan 2 (DET) (8/26/04)
Hard luck again… LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.76, L) throws an eight-inning complete game, two runs on four hits (HR), two hit batters, and a walk against seven strikeouts, but still loses. RF Chris Colton (2B, 3B, R, .246) was pretty much all the offense had in this one.
Wisconsin 2, West Michigan 3 (DET) (8/27/04)
I’m sensing a pattern here… LHP Ryan Feierabend (3.74) pitched six strong innings, with a run on six hits (HR) and two walks with four strikeouts, and then RHP Kenly Chang (5.13) had a perfect seventh while striking out a batter. Even LHP Casey Abrams (10.33) got on the bandwagon and had an uneventful two-thirds of an inning, but then RHP Matt Tindell (6.75, L) came in, walked a batter, threw a wild pitch, gave up a home run, hit another batter, and was promptly pulled. RHP Ruben Castillo (4.66) walked a batter before striking out the last one, but by that time, the damage was done. LF Bryan Lahair (2 2B, .286) did his thing with another two hits; 1B Jeremy Dutton (SB, .207) had similar results, albeit with less power.
Wisconsin 1, West Michigan 8 (DET) (8/28/04)
…All right, forget the pattern and the streak of four one-run games, now begins a three game streak of opponents scoring an eight-spot. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (4.40, L) continues to pitch his way into the bullpen for next year, going two and two-thirds innings with six earned runs on eight hits, a wild pitch, and three walks with just one strikeout. RHP Chad Fillinger (8.38) went next, two and a third innings with a run on three hits against two strikeouts. RHP Austin Bilke (3.63) pitched the sixth inning, giving up a hit and ringing up two, then LHP Michael Ciccotelli (2.45) pitched the next two frames and gave up just a hit along the way. 3B Michael Cox (2B, RBI, .232) had two hits, along with the only showing of power for the T-Rats in this game.
Wisconsin 0, West Michigan 8 (DET) (8/29/04)
RHP Bryan Stitt (4.31, L) ran into trouble for the first time as a starter this year, giving up five runs on six hits (HR) and two walks in his six innings, though he did strike out nine. LHP Casey Abrams (10.93) regressed again in the seventh, giving up three runs on four hits and a wild pitch while striking out two. RHP Mike Hrynio (3.38) hit a batter and struck out another in the eighth. Another uneventful night for the offense, as DH Nick Orlandos (.300) had two hits and neither of them amounted to anything.
Wisconsin 13, West Michigan 8 (DET) (8/30/04)
Again, flashes of brilliance from an offense that can’t quite put it all together. RHP Brandon Moorhead (3.24, W) had another good start, another seven innings with two more earned runs on nine hits, a hit batter, and a walk against six strikeouts. RHP Ruben Castillo (4.22) had an uneventful eighth, but then RHP Kenly Chang (5.64) made a few nervous in the ninth by allowing four earned runs on five hits (HR) and a walk. Where to start… well, 1B Jeremy Dutton (2B, 2 R, 4 RBI, .218) was 4-4 with a walk, and that’s certainly something. Three others, 2B Michael Cox (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .233), C Justin Ruchti (R, RBI, .225), and SS Francisco Gerez (2B, R, 3 RBI, 2 E, .318), logged two hits each. RF Chris Colton (2B, 2 R, RBI, .239) also added a double to the cause.
Tacoma Rainiers: 73-54, .575, 1st in PCL North
San Antonio Missions: 59-66, (29-26, 2nd half) .472 (.527), 1.5 GB in TL West

Everett Aquasox, for the week of 8/24-8/30
Boise 3 (CHC), Everett 1 (eight innings) (8/24/04)
I leave you guys alone for one week and look what happens… RHP Aaron Trolia (6.33, L) wasn’t all that bad, going six innings and allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts, but it just wasn’t enough. RHP Brad Rose (0.00), who’s getting the Frequent Flier’s award at season’s end, pitched two perfect innings after that and had a couple of strikeouts. For the offense’s part, well… in the fourth, 3B Brent Johnson (R, .308) walked and scored later on single by LF Trevor Heid (RBI, .219). C Omar Falcon (.241) also walked twice.
Boise 12 (CHC), Everett 2 (seven innings) (8/26/04)
LHP Shawn Nottingham (3.15, L) had his second rough start of the year, going just three innings and allowing four earned on five hits (HR), a hit batter, a wild pitch, and four walks against four strikeouts. LHP Vance Hall (6.16) went the next two innings, giving up an earned run after two hits (HR), a wild pitch, and a walk with another couple of strikeouts. LHP Kendall Bergdall (6.44, E) also ran into some serious trouble in his two innings, giving up three earned on four hits (HR), two wild pitches, and three walks against two strikeouts. On offense, 1B Brandon Green (E, .277) and RF Thomas Hubbard (.263) had two hits apiece, though you couldn’t tell from all the good they did. Instead, DH Matt Tuiasosopo (HR, 2 RBI, .293) had the offensive output for the game.
Boise 4 (CHC), Everett 1 (seven innings) (8/26/04)
RHP Aaron Jensen (4.91, L) was pretty good through five innings, giving up three earned runs after four hits, a wild pitch, and three walks against six strikeouts. RHP Cibney Bello (4.50) would finish up the game with three hits and two hit batters turning into a run while he struck out three. Again, the offense was sputtering, and when your only run comes when CF Mike Wilson (RBI, .246) walks with the bases full, you’re in trouble.
Boise 2 (CHC), Everett 0 (8/27/04)
Here, I will focus on the positives of the pitching. RHP Mumba Rivera (2.96, L) was stellar through seven innings, giving up no earned runs and scattering four hits and three wild pitches while striking out five. Mumba Fever! RHP Roman Martinez (0.00), who has recently taken to making me eat my words, pitched the next two-thirds of an inning giving up just a hit. After that, RHP Mark Lowe (5.35) stepped in for the next four outs and gave up a run on three hits while punching out a batter. 2B Oswaldo Navarro (2B, .260) had two hits and the only extra-base knock for the Sox in this one.
Everett 1, Vancouver 3 (OAK) (8/28/04)
RHP Jason Snyder (2.41) did his usual thing over five innings, with a run on five hits, a hit batter, two wild pitches, and a walk while striking out four. The loss went to RHP Terry Forbes (4.91), who gave up a couple of runs on three hits and a wild pitch in just a third of an inning. RHP Brad Rose (0.00) cleaned up after that, with a hit, a walk, and a strikeout overall. 2B Oswaldo Navarro (.264) had another two hits, while some doubles came via the bats of 1B Brandon Green (2B, .272) and RF Thomas Hubbard (2B, .262).
Everett 5, Vancouver 3 (OAK) (8/29/04)
The lone win in this painful stretch… RHP Aaron Trolia (5.40) gave the Sox another good start, going six and a third innings and allowing an earned run on five hits, a wild pitch, and a walk with three strikeouts. RHP Cibney Bello (4.40, W) finished up that inning, and actually gave up Trolia’s run and an unearned of his own after a hit, a wild pitch, and a strikeout. RHP Mark Lowe (5.06, S) got another save with two innings that saw two runners reach via the free pass and three strikeouts. 2B Oswaldo Navarro (2B, .265) had the double and CF Brent Johnson (R, RBI, .303) had two hits, but it was 1B Brandon Green (2 RBI, .272) who seemed to make the most of his opportunities. Oh yeah, C Brian Schweiger (R, .290) also walked twice and sacrificed once.
Everett 2, Vancouver 3 (OAK) (8/30/04)
Unfortunately, this probably knocks him out of contention for pitcher of the month, but LHP Shawn Nottingham (3.22, L) went six and two-thirds innings and gave up three runs on two hits (HR) with four walks and six strikeouts. RHP Phil Cullen (1.91) wrapped the game up, allowing only a walk after that. LF Mike Wilson (2 2B, .248) had a couple of doubles, CF Brent Johnson (2B, R, .302) and DH Matt Tuiasosopo (2B, RBI, .267) had one each, SS Asdrubal Cabrera (3B, R, .270) tripled, but they still couldn’t turn it into enough to win the game.
Tacoma Rainiers: 73-54, .575, 1st in PCL North
San Antonio Missions: 59-66, (29-26, 2nd half) .472 (.527), 1.5 GB in TL West

Peoria Mariners, for the week of 8/24-8/30
Peoria Mariners 5, Arizona Brewers 2 (8/24/04)
RHP Eric Carter (4.26, E) went through six innings, giving up eleven hits and throwing a wild pitch, though somehow those only turned into two unearned runs and he struck out five. RHP Stephen Grasley (3.55, W) pitched the next inning and gave up a hit while striking out two with, unsurprisingly, no walks. LHP Adam Brandt (2.79, S) did, however, though that was the only runner to reach base in his two innings and he struck out two along the way. RF John-Austin Emmons (RBI, .336) and 3B Pedro Ozoria (R, 2 SB, .244) both managed two hits, while SS/2B Jack Arroyo (2B, R, RBI, .310) had the only extra-base hit on the team. All three walked once as well.
Peoria Mariners 11, Mesa Cubs 2 (8/26/04)
RHP Oliver Arias (5.59, W) had one of his better starts in recent memory, going six innings and allowing a couple of runs on five hits and two walks while striking out nine. RHP Tyrone Lamont (3.31) went next, with two shutout innings where he gave up a hit and struck out two. RHP Craig James (0.73) pitched the last inning and struck out a batter. 2B Rayon Lampe (R, 2 RBI, .223) had the best night of his young career by going 4-4, though all were singles. The same was true for 1B Luis Soto (2 R, 2 RBI, .328) and his three singles, though RF John-Austin Emmons (2B, 2 R, .333) and rehabbing DH Ryan Balfe (2B, 3B, 2 R, 3 RBI, .400) showed some pop. LF Joe Jacobitz (R, RBI, .300) also had two hits, again, both singles.
Phoenix Athletics 5, Peoria Mariners 2 (8/27/04)
RHP Joe Woerman (5.33, L) struggled a little again, going five innings but giving up three earned runs on five hits, a hit batter, and two walks against four strikeouts. RHP Ryan Leaist (2.35) did quite well in the next four innings, giving up nothing earned with one hit, three walks, and five strikeouts. 3B/2B Pedro Ozoria (R, SB, E, .250) was the only one with two hits, though 1B Luis Soto (2B, RBI, .326) and LF Jermaine Brock (2B, .231) had an extra-base hit each.
Peoria Mariners 0, Scottsdale Giants 1 (8/28/04)
RHP Jon Lockwood (6.97, L) was the unlucky recipient of the loss this time, pitching solidly, with only one run on five hits, three walks, and five strikeouts over five innings, but getting zilch in terms of run support. RHP Stephen Grasley (3.18) went the next three innings, with two hits, a hit batter, and four strikeouts. Grasley's been a model pitcher of late, and may be making enough of an impression to get him to Wisconsin to start next year. In a bit of a shift of regular positions, 3B Luis Soto (SB, .333) and CF Jermaine Brock (.242) both had two hits. Brock, we know, is a natural centerfielder, but Soto at third? Unreal.
Arizona Royals 3, Peoria Mariners 5 (8/29/04)
LHP Paul Fagan (5.07, W), in his final start of the season, brought out his A-game to make one final impression on the league, going six shutout innings and allowing five hits, a hit batter, a wild pitch, and walk against six strikeouts. LHP Adam Brandt (3.38) went for the next two innings, allowing a couple of earned runs on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts. RHP Craig James (0.68, S) got another save with a perfect ninth. The trio of 1B Jeff Flaig (3B, R, .252), C Danny Santin (HR, 2 RBI, PB, .325), and DH Rob Johnson (R, .222) had two hits apiece, while 3B Luis Soto (2B, R, RBI, CS, 2 E, .331), 2B Pedro Ozoria (HR, 2 RBI, .254), and CF David Hall (2B, .222) all showed off some power with their hits.
That's it for the AZL, they're done for the year. Some guys may be moved up and see time elsewhere depending on what happens with Everett and Wisconsin, maybe Inland as well.

One week, and about half a grand later, I'm back in business. I'll start getting recaps together as soon as I finish tweaking things.
I plan on starting with the AZL and working my way up gradually. This may be interrupted by writing the POTM article, I don't know yet, but that's the plan so far. I only have a few box scores for the AZL, but thanks to those of you who posted a few of them in the comments section.
