  News Around the Minors (2/1/05)

This isn't news, so much as various general prospect rankings that are worth noting.

To start, I have to bring up John Sickels' last article at ESPN, a top ten list of hitting prospects and a top ten list of pitching prospect. Reed comes in as ten for the hitters, while Felix is numero uno for the pitchers. As for Sickels, he'll be starting up his own blog type thing which I will link to once it goes online in a couple of weeks. When I first got into prospect watching, Down on the Farm was one of the earliest resources I came across and I was a loyal reader ever since.

Baseball Notebook, previously (and currently) known for their curious rankings, has posted a list of hitters/pitchers who could be interesting, but lack an opportunity right now. Wlad Balentien is number two on the hitters list, and Shin-soo Choo comes in at number nine...
2. Wladimir Balentien, of, Seattle: An absolute long-shot to emerge as a regular player, he already has 35 home run power and 10 steal potential. Of course, there's absolutely no place for him to play, barring major injuries at the big league level. His age (20) makes it unlikely he'll get an opportunity this season. Most consider him the most powerful hitter in the Seattle farm system.

9. Shin-Soo Choo, of, Seattle: A 15 home run, 20-25 steals type if he plays, it's most likely that he's either heading to Triple-A to play full-time or lands on the bench with the big league team, rarely playing and thus, rarely contributing much.

I figure that this article was intended as applying to those players coming to the team with the rest of the 40-man, otherwise I don't know why they'd suggest Wlad as a starter. It would require a catastrophe to make the Mariners bring him up at any point this year. But as for what they say, yes, he could steal ten to twenty bases as well as clobbering a few home runs. With Choo, add ten to twenty SBs to their analysis and we'll say it's good. No reason he shouldn't be in Tacoma getting as many ABs as possible though.

Creative Sports (not doing the wacky capitalization thing) has a free listing of their top ten prospects. I can forgive the occasional error, after all, some teams don't update information too well on their rosters, but read their opinion of Felix, and enjoy.

Closing on different note, there's also an article in the PI regarding this year's draft pool. It's decent, coinciding with some draft coverage that Baseball America has been running lately. Remember, while it's just 14 days until spring training, it's only four months until draft day. Why, that's right around the corner!

  NRI Article

Instead of posting the breakdown of this year's non-roster invitees here, I wrote an article which is now up at InsideThePark.

For those curious, I'm of the opinion that it's more likely that an NRI could make the team this year than in previous years. I'm not saying it will happen, but there are certain things that are less certain, like bullpen roles and perhaps the backup infielder. The org doesn't seem quite as satisfied with Bloomquist as they were during the Melvin era, but that's mostly my opinion. It's generally easier to say NRIs won't make the team than suggesting any one of them will.

This article, of course, is open to the public, so don't worry about the subscriptions on this one. Liberty and free content for all.
