  Random Media Guide Notes:

Finally got a copy of the 2006 Media Guide (big thanks to Slim, for getting one for me) and have been busily scouring the minor league sections for news on minor league signings and who might be on the summer league rosters.

Familiar names like RHP Mike Hrynio and IF Billy Hogan, along with RHP Felix Correa and C Tim Dierkes are still in the system, but were down with elbow surgery last year. OFs Jermaine Brock and Matt Ware and RHPs Justin Ockerman and Ryan Leaist, are still technically system property though know one's seen any of them in quite a while. Ockerman played basketball and had UCL surgery, I know that much. RHP Donald Clement missed last year with labrum surgery, as did RHP Ruben Flores.

The M's have signed a seventeen-year-old Italian infielder by the name of Alex Liddi, who was the first of two Italian players signed by MLB organizations this past year (the other going to the Cubs). They've also had some return from their new scouting presence in Mexico, as C Israel Nunez played in the DSL last year.

My favorite new name in the summer leagues... well, it's a three-way tie between IF Edilio Colina, RHP Yoervis Medina, and RHP Bruno Mercedes, all of which should appear with Aguirre. First name only would give some points to Dominican infielder Fray Martinez and maybe Venezuelan RHP Yovanny Olivero. Last name only, I'd have to go with Venezuelan RHP Douglas Salinas, who was in the instructional league this past fall, or better yet, Dominican catcher Jonathan Loaisiga.

I did a little additional digging on Salinas (the only guy I could find any info on), and he was clocked at 90 mph around the time of his signing, with good mechanics and an aggressive approach. He also has a curve and a change in his arsenal.

  News Around the Minors (3/5/06)

In retrospect, I probably could've waited around and put the last two posts in the same entry as this one. Eh...

The UW Huskies just went 4-2 in a tournament in Hawaii this past week, including a 5-2 victory over Arkansas, and RHP Tim Lincecum was named top pitcher in the tourney, while OF Matt Hague and IF Curt Rindal were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Everett Herald has some mention of Jesse Foppert and Clint Nageotte and their roles in yesterday's game. While some have said that the roster is pretty much set, there have been a few unexpected hiccups along the way, like Meche going down with an oblique strain, that could impact decisions later.

Travis Blackley, one of my favorite M's 'spects, appears to be doing well following his B game outing, according to the Tacoma News Tribune.

Mike Hargrove is considering using RHP Marcos Carvajal as a starter, according to MLB.com. It probably wouldn't be wise to assume that he could be stretched out into a regular starter quickly, but this does impace the minors in that he's a likely candidate for the Missions rotation.

On the topic of those Missions, there's a story in the San Antonio Express-News on how the they would be moving out, if the Marlins were on their way in.

Returning to MLB.com, Doug Miller tries his hand at a second minor league notebook, this one focusing mainly on Tui and his move to third during the B game. Whether he becomes a third baseman or a corner outfielder in the end remains uncertain, but I'm expecting big things from him next season.

Ending with a former M's note, RHP Tyrone Lamont faced the A's yesterday and didn't allow a hit over an inning and two-thirds. Go Laz!

  RRS Out of the WBC?

From this article in the Australian team's section, we have this news bit...
Injured pitcher: Seattle Mariners' minor-league pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith will return to the organization to have his sore left (pitching) elbow examined by the team. He is expected to be replaced on the roster by either lefty Tim Cox (Boston), or righties Josh Hill (Minnesota) or Glenn Richards (Atlanta).
RRS was the only remaining M's representative on the Aussie team.

This is the first I've heard of any sort of elbow problems with him. I wonder how long this has been going on.
