  Game Recaps (7/7/05 and 7/8/05)

Double recaps!
Edit: 2:16 pm, now with Peoria's box from the day before...

Tacoma 1, Portland 4 (SD)
RHP Chris Buglovsky (4.79, PO) went three and one-third innings and gave up a run on four hits (HR) and a walk against a strikeout. RHP Michael Bumstead (5.05) went the next two and two-thirds, giving up a hit and two walks and punching out one. LHP Cesar Jimenez (0.00), up from double-A, was perfect in his debut and struck out one in one inning, but LHP Jared Thomas (4.98) would lose it, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk against a strikeout in the eighth. DH Aaron Rifkin (HR, .253) had three hits on the night for the Rainiers, but that was all that was worth noting.

Tacoma 2, Tucson 9 (ARI)
RHP Cha Seung Baek (5.33, L) went four+ innings, giving up nine runs on eight hits (2 HR!) and three walks, but RHP Jeff Heaverlo (5.32) let two of those score, as he gave up one hit and struck out two in the next two frames. RHP Sean Green (2.84) walked two and threw a wild pitch, but came out of his inning unscathed. RHP Masao Kida (3.90) hit a batter in the eighth. CF Jamal Strong (2B, RBI, .311), 1B Greg Dobbs (2B, .333), and 3B Justin Leone (2 2B, R, .273) had two hits each.

San Antonio 5, Midland 3 (OAK)
LHP Thom Oldham (3.66, W) went five and two-thirds innings for the win, giving up two runs on eight hits and two walks against six strikeouts. RHP R.D. Spiehs (1.35) went the next inning and a third, giving up a run on two hits, and RHP Emiliano Fruto (3.04, S) picked up the save after two innings where he gave up two hits and a walk while striking out two. 2B Ismael Castro (2 2B, R, 2 RBI, CS, PO, .252) had three hits in the game, and LF Jaime Bubela (3B, R, .287), 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, RBI, .271), RF T.J. Bohn (.302), and CF Gary Harris (HR, .280) had two each.

San Antonio 4, Midland 9
LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (4.68, L) went seven innings and allowed four runs to score on nine hits, two wild pitches, and a walk against six strikeouts. All those runs scored in the last three innings RRS pitched, but as bad as that was, RHP Renee Cortez (4.97) had it worse, giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts in the eighth. 1B Jess Hoorelbeke (2B, HR, 2 RBI, .264), SS Adam Jones (E, .278), and 2B Ismael Castro (2R, .256) each had two hits. After a couple of injury-riddled seasons and a tough promotion, Castro seems to be getting his bat on track. Wonder what his line will look like by the season’s end.

High Desert 7 (KC), Inland Empire 12
RHP Rafael Soriano (0.00) got an inning’s worth of rehab in, giving up one hit and striking out the side. RHP Mumba Rivera (8.92, W) followed and went six and two-thirds innings, giving up seven runs on ten hits (2 HR!) and a walk against eight strikeouts to nail down his first Cal League win. RHP Mike Steele (4.41) gave up a hit and struck out two over the last inning and a third. There was more than enough offense to go around, as 2B Matt Rogelstad (2 R, RBI, .311), 1B Bryan Lahair (HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, .272) and C Chris Collins (2B, R, RBI, .258) had three hits apiece, and CF Sebastien Boucher (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .296), SS Asdrubal Cabrera (3B, R, RBI, .326), and DH Wladimir Balentien (3B, RBI, .266) had two each.

Modesto 1 (COL), Inland Empire 4
LHP Ryan Feierabend (4.42, 3 PO, W) actually had a great outing, going eight innings and allowing just the six hits and a walk with six strikeouts. RHP Craig James (4.50) allowed a run on two hits and struck out two in the ninth. SS Asdrubal Cabrera (R, RBI, SB, .340), 1B Bryan Lahair (2B, R, .275), and LF Carlos Arroyo (.362) each had two hits. It’s been fifty at-bats now, and it looks like someone forgot to tell Drubie that the competition in the Cal League is supposed to be tougher. And… since I haven’t said it in a while, promote Carlos Arroyo.

Beloit 9 (MIN), Wisconsin 7
LHP Casey Abrams (6.04, L) did his thing for two and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on three hits, two wild pitches, and five walks against one strikeout. I was listening to part of this game, the masochist in me was acting up I guess, but I did learn an interesting fact. Did you know that Abrams is leading the league in walks? Not only is the runner up fourteen walks behind Abrams, he’s also pitched 10.1 more innings. It’s not like the rotation isn’t hurting right now (but there is good news on the horizon)… LHP Eric O’Flaherty (5.66) gave up two of those and four of his own over the next two and two-thirds on four hits, a wild pitch, and two walks against two Ks, but RHP Roman Martinez (3.82) allowed to of O’Flaherty’s runs to score on three hits and a walk with a couple of strikeouts in the next three and two-thirds innings. SS Oswaldo Navarro (2B, .264), 1B Marshall Hubbard (2B, 2 R, .317), RF-CF Chris Colton (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .409), LF Brent Johnson (2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, .233), and DH Luis Soto (2B, RBI, .167) each had an extra-base hit. 3B Brandon Green (R, .224) went 0-for-2 but walked three times, and Colton also walked twice.

Wisconsin 2, Peoria 5 (CHC)
RHP Randy Frye (6.23, L) went five innings and gave up three runs on eight hits (HR) and five walks with one strikeout. RHP Ivan Blanco (4.03) pitched the next two, giving up a couple of runs on four hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against three strikeouts, and then RHP Justin Jordon (0.00) struck out the side (and had a wild pitch, error, I guess), in the eighth. CF Chris Colton (R, .423) and RF Mike Wilson (2B, RBI, .264) each had two hits.

Everett 10, Boise 3 (CHC)
LHP Paul Fagan (3.78, PO, E) went the first four innings, giving up a run on four hits, two hit batters, and three walks against one strikeout. RHP Jon Lockwood (0.00, W) would take the next three innings, and the win, and was perfect through all of them, striking out five. RHP Jeff Mault (5.06) struck out one in the eighth, but then RHP Joe Woerman (5.06) got into some trouble, giving up two runs (both unearned) on a hit, a hit batter, and a walk without recording an out. RHP Cory Koliscak (0.00) ended up pitching the rest of the ninth and striking out a batter. 2B Luis Valbuena (3B, 2 R, 4 RBI, SB, .303) led the way with four hits, DH Danny Santin (2B, .333), CF David Hall (RBI, .370), and LF Bryan Sabatella (2B, 3 R, .250) backed him up with three each, and RF Casey Craig (2B, 2 R, RBI, .333), SS-3B Ron Prettyman (R, 2 RBI, .444), and 3B Reed Eastley (.381) had two each.

Everett 4, Boise 12
Payback by the Hawks for yesterday’s embarrassment. RHP Eric Carter (7.24, L) gave up six runs on seven hits (HR), a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a walk in an inning and two-thirds. LHP Lance Beus (5.14) was next in line and gave up three runs on five hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and two walks against a strikeout in the next three and one-third+ innings. RHP Edgar Guaramato (6.14) let one of those score on the only hit he allowed, and struck out one in the sixth, and then RHP Oliver Arias (4.15, E) took the final two innings and gave up three runs (two earned) after five hits, a wild pitch, and two strikeouts. LF Casey Craig (2B, 2 R, .358) had another three hits, 3B Ron Prettyman (2B, RBI, .455) had two, and 2B Luis Valbuena (2B, RBI, .300) and C Brian Schweiger (2B, RBI, .182) both doubled.

Phoenix Athletics 14, Peoria Mariners 12
Making a rehab appearance, RHP Scott Atchison (0.00) got an inning in, giving up one hit and striking out two. I actually expected Dorman or Sherrill to make an appearance before Atch, but he’s kind of become a forgotten man in recent months. RHP Miguel Marquez (11.70, L) went the next three innings and had his usual bad outing (unfortunately) and gave up nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits, a hit batter, and three walks. LHP Daniel Schwab (3.38) went two frames after that, giving up an unearned run on two hits, a wild pitch, and two walks, and then LHP Estelin Soto (7.45) went the final three, giving up four runs on four hits, two hit batters, three walks, and two strikeouts. As bad as the pitching was, almost everyone in the lineup had a hit in this one. 3B Ronald Garth (R, 3 RBI, E, .500) and C Kent Dixon (2 R, SB, 2 PB, E, .429) both had three hits, and RF Jose Graterol (RBI, SB, CS, .520), CF Tim Auty (2B, 3B, 2 R, RBI, .455), SS Jeff Dominguez (2 R, 2 RBI, SB, .241), and DH Erwin Jacobo (R, RBI, .235) had two each.

Mesa Cubs 7, Peoria Mariners 6
LHP Harold Williams (2.37, PO) was stellar again, going five innings and allowing two hits, a wild pitch, and a walk while striking out five. RHP Tyrone Lamont (5.25) went next and gave up three runs on three hits against two strikeouts, and since none of the hits left the park, I’m thinking some errors were involved. RHP Toma Bonilla (7.36, L) got the loss after he gave up four runs on five hits and a walk in just one inning of work. SS Dean Zorn (2B, R, E, .200), DH Jairo Hernandez (2B, HR, 2 R, .412), RF Eddy Hernandez (3B, R, RBI, .294), and 3B Leury Bonilla (2B, RBI, .235) had two hits apiece.

Aguirre 1, Ciudad Alianza 2 (BOS-SD) (seven+ innings)
Rain shortened the game today. LHP Jose Escalona (1.15, L) got tagged with a tough loss, as the only damage done against him happened to be a solo home run. He also struck out seven over the course of five innings. RHP Alfredo Venagas (3.06) got an inning and third in after that, giving up a run on two hits and a wild pitch before the game had to be called. SS Deybis Benitez (RBI, .175) had two hits, but LF Rayon Lampe (.227) was the only other player to have even one.

Universidad 5 (FLA-WAS), Aguirre 8
LHP Kervin Montbrum (1.74) gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits, two wild pitches, and three walks with two strikeouts in four innings. RHP Jorge Acosta (3.38) went the next four and would allow one more run on four hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and a walk with three strikeouts. RHP Diomny Gaetano (0.49, S) sealed it with a perfect ninth that saw him K another batter. DH Humberto Espinoza (2 R, RBI, .325) and CF Manuel Pinto (2 2B, R, .283) had three hits each and 3B/SS Deybis Benitez (R, E, .186) and 1B Gerardo Avila (HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, .268) had two apiece. RF Nicomedes Gomez (2B, R, .230) also had a double.

  Game Recaps (7/6/05)

Tacoma 2, Portland 3 (SD)
LHP Damian Moss (4.48) went six innings and gave up all three of the Beavers’ runs on four hits and three walks against four Ks. RHP Sean Green (3.00) was perfect in the final two, striking out a couple of batters. Every player in the lineup had one hit and exactly one hit in this one. 2B Ramon Santiago (HR, .250) hit a home run, and C Ryan Christianson (.280) had a couple of walks in addition to his single. SS Yuniesky Betancourt (SB, .281) was hit by a pitch in the elbow late in the game and was replaced by PR-SS Justin Leone (.272).

San Antonio 1, Midland 2 (OAK)
RHP Juan Sandoval (3.64, L) pitched well, but was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs on six hits, a balk, and a walk against five strikeouts over the course of seven innings. LHP Tim Rall (3.06) had a hit, a walk, and a strikeout in the eighth. RF T.J. Bohn (2B, RBI, .299), 1B Nate Espy (2B, RBI, .289), and C Rene Rivera (.295) each had two hits, and 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, .268) had a double. Interesting note on Guzman I gleaned from a Times article recently; the longest he’s gone without a hit is two consecutive games this season. That’s all.

High Desert 9 (KC), Inland Empire 1
LHP Jason Mackintosh (4.07, L) ran into some trouble in this start, giving up five runs on nine hits (HR) and three walks against four Ks. RHP Aaron Trolia (4.37) let two of those score, though, and three more of his own over the next three and two-thirds on six hits (HR) with four strikeouts. RHP Craig James (0.00) had a hit and a strikeout in his Cal League debut in the ninth. 3B Erick Monzon (2 2B, .277) and RF B.J. Garbe (.268) both had two hits, and SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, RBI, .317) had a double. DH Wladimir Balentien (.264) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout again tonight. I’m wondering if we’re heading into that time of the year where I’ve seen the switch go on for him in the past, and he’s started taking walks.

Beloit 3 (MIN), Wisconsin 5
RHP Jason Snyder (4.47) lasted only two innings before being pulled with shoulder troubles, giving up three runs on four hits and two walks. RHP Stephen Grasley (3.71, W) went the next four innings, allowing just a hit and a walk while striking out two to get the win. RHP Justin Jordan (0.00), taking the spot of Craig James on the roster, pitched an inning and two-thirds with a hit, a walk, and a strikeout to show for it, and LHP Donny Langdon (6.75, S) had the same results in his one and one-third innings, plus a wild pitch. 3B Brandon Green (2B, .226) and LF Brent Johnson (2B, RBI, SB, .231) led the way with three hits apiece, and DH Matt Tuiasosopo (HR, 3 R, .286) added two, including his sixth home run. C Omar Falcon (2B, R, RBI, .274) contributed a double.

Also, I found this out last night and it was apparently repeated on the radio earlier, but if you’re curious as to why it took James so long to get to California, I have the answer. He lost his driver’s license and didn’t have the identification needed to get through the airport.

Everett 16, Boise 9 (CHC)
I guess the whole “college hitters” thing is starting to work for the Aquasox. LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (4.15) only made it through three innings though, giving up three runs on eight hits and a wild pitch before he was pulled for RHP Joe Woerman (5.06), who also struggled, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk against a strikeout in the next inning. LHP Rollie Gibson (1.42, W) would get the win as he went the fifth and sixth innings, giving up just one hit and striking out one. RHP Juan Colon (6.43), RHP Edgar Guaramato (7.11), and RHP Cory Koliscak (0.00) split the last three innings, with Colon getting into the most trouble, giving up four runs on four hits, a wild pitch and a walk. Guaramato and Koliscak had it easy by comparison, as Guaramato struck out two and Koliscak allowed only one hit. SS Ron Prettyman (HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, .429) had four hits in the game, CF David Hall (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .304) and DH Bryan Sabatella (R, 3 RBI, .204) had three each, and 2B Luis Valbuena (R, RBI, .262) and 3B Reed Eastley (R, E, .353) had two apiece. 1B Jeff Flaig (2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, .304) had a double and a walk.

Reader Ryan Harvey sent me an e-mail pointing out a recent story in the Des Moines Register about Jeff Clement’s number being retired at his high school in Marshalltown. The article goes on to say that Clement may be receiving a bonus in the neighborhood of $3 million, and while negotiations have stalled a little lately, he hopes to get a deal done soon. Sounds like a great guy, and the article is definitely worth the time to read. Cheers to Ryan for bringing this to my attention.

  Game Recaps (7/5/05)

Tacoma 8, Portland 3 (SD)
RHP Jeff Harris (2.52, W) went six innings and gave up a couple of runs on six hits (HR) against five strikeouts. RHP Clint Nageotte (1.23, S) went the final three, giving up a run on two hits with three strikeouts along the way. Oddly enough, all the batters that were hitting had at least two hits. C Wiki Gonzalez (2 2B, 2 RBI, .362) had four of them, and CF Jamal Strong (RBI, .310), RF Abraham Nunez (2B, R, RBI, .272), 1B Greg Dobbs (2 2B, R, RBI, .359), 2B Ramon Santiago (2B, 2 R, RBI, .260), and SS Yuniesky Betancourt (2 2B, 2 R, RBI, .278) filling out the rest of the crowd.

High Desert 5 (KC), Inland Empire 4
RHP Brandon Moorhead (4.58) appeared again to take the start and go an inning and two-thirds with it, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk. RHP Chad Fillinger (7.59, E) gave up one of those, but only allowed three hits over the next four innings and struck out five. RHP Greg Wear (4.71) blew it, however, giving up two runs on four hits (HR) and a walk in an inning and two-thirds, but it was LHP Troy Cate (1.08) who lost it after giving up a run on a hit, a wild pitch, and four walks against a strikeout in an inning and a third. The offense was… well, not good. 2B Matt Rogelstad (R, .307) had two hits, and DH Wladimir Balentien (R, .263) went 0-for-2 with two walks against a strikeouts, but that was about all.

Beloit 7 (MIN), Wisconsin 5
LHP Julio Santiago (4.58) went five+ innings and gave up three runs on five hits, three walks, and two Ks, but had he been pulled before the sixth, that line would’ve been minus a hit, a walk, and two runs. Instead, RHP Cibney Bello (4.96, L) gave up both those runs, and in turn gave up four runs of his own (two of which scored after he was pulled) on six hits and two walks against three strikeouts in an inning and two-thirds. LHP Eric O’Flaherty (5.12) would go the final two and a third innings, giving up a hit, hitting a batter, and striking out one. LF Josh Womack (2 R, RBI, SB, .265) busted out four hits tonight, and 3B Yung-Chi Chen (RBI, CS, .296) had two. 1B Brandon Green (2B, R, .216) had a double.

Everett 7, Boise 1 (CHC)
LHP Justin Thomas (4.15, W) got the start and the win tonight, going the minimum and allowing a run on four hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against three strikeouts. RHP Jeff Mault (6.23) gave up a hit and two walks while recording one out in the bottom of the sixth, but LHP Lance Beus (2.45) dug him out of that mess by going the next inning and two-thirds without allowing a batter to reach base. RHP Oliver Arias (3.27) and RHP Edgar Guaramato (8.44) split the last two innings, with Arias giving up a hit and a walk while striking out one and Guaramato doing the same, minus the walk. C J.B. Tucker (2 2B, 3 R, .314) led the way with three hits, while 2B Reed Eastley (2B, .364), DH Danny Santin (RBI, .302), RF Alex Gary (2 2B, R, .226), CF Michael Saunders (3 RBI, CS, .261), and LF Bryan Sabatella (3 RBI, .159) had two apiece. PR-DH Casey Craig (2 R, .3.26) pinch ran for Santin in the eighth and had a single in an at-bat in the ninth.

Peoria Mariners 3, Peoria Padres 11
LHP Steve Uhlmansiek (7.36, E) got two innings in, giving up three unearned runs on three hits with three strikeouts. RHP Juan Zapata (4.09) went the next four innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks against four strikeouts. After that, LHP Worth Lumry (7.50) gave up four runs (three earned again) on four hits and three walks against one K over the final two frames. 2B Jeff Dominguez (2 B, 3B, R, E, .200), RF Jose Graterol (2 RBI, 3 SB, .550), and CF Tim Auty (2B, .471) had two hits apiece, and 1B Curtis Ledbetter (2B, R, 2 E, .278) had a double. As I originally suspected, the promotion of Hudson/Prettyman sent SS Dean Zorn (.000) back to Peoria, where he made an error in his first start. All told, there were seven errors by the M’s.

Aguirre 3, Tronconero #1 6 (PHI)
RHP Ronald Uviedo (2.37, L) went four and a third innings and gave up four runs on seven hits, two hit batters, three walks, and four strikeouts. LHP Jose Jimenez (4.80, E) went the next inning and gave up a couple of runs on two hits and a walk, and RHP Kelvin Alarcon (1.90) went the final two and two-thirds, giving up three hits and striking out two. 2B Humberto Espinoza (2B, R, RBI, .321) had two hits to reclaim the team lead in batting average, and 1B Gerardo Avila (HR, .267) hit his fourth home run. Just because I know you guys love him, I’ll note that DH Jetsy Extrano (R, .136) was 0-for-1 with two walks, and at .132, his ISO OBP is not bad. He still isn’t hitting with the same authority as he did in the first few games of the season though.

  Game Recaps (7/4/05)

Well, the 4th of July is over. Hope you’ve all enjoyed yourselves, whether your actions were legal or not, and come out of the whole thing with eyebrows still intact.

Tacoma 10, Portland 0 (SD)
LHP Andrew Lorraine (4.01) pitched a six-hit, two-walk shutout tonight and struck out three. He’s been doing that more often than I’ve anticipated. As the ten runs implies, it was bad night for Portland pitching. How bad was it, you ask? Bad enough to put in former Rainiers CF Dustin Delucchi as a pitcher for the final inning. RF Abraham Nunez (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .270) had three hits, and LF Shin-soo Choo (HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, .263) and 2B Ramon Santiago (2B, R, RBI, .246) each had two. C Ryan Christianson (2B, 3 R, SB, .278) had a double and a couple of walks.

Frisco 1 (TEX), San Antonio 2
LHP Bobby Livingston (2.78) pitched another good one, going six and two-thirds innings and allowing a run on eight hits (HR), a hit batter, and three walks with two strikeouts. RHP Renee Cortez (4.14) had a hit and three strikeouts over the next two innings before LHP Cesar Jimenez (3.11, S) struck out the final batter of the game. Scoring was limited to the longball in this one, as DH Nate Espy (HR, .285), who had two hits, and 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (2B, HR, .265), who had three hits, both clubbed solo shots out of the park. CF Jaime Bubela (.285) had his hitting streak finally end tonight at twenty-three games, as he went 0-for-4 and struck out three times.

High Desert 9 (KC), Inland Empire 7
A game pitched out of order, or so it seems. RHP Rafael Soriano (0.00) was perfect in two innings of work and struck out two, and then RHP Mike Steele (4.53, L) came in and gave up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and a walk against a strikeout in an inning and a third. LHP Derrick Ellison (7.36) gave up one of those runs and two of his own (one earned) in the next inning and two-thirds on three hits, a hit batter, and three strikeouts. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (5.16) went on to pitch the last four innings, giving up six hits, but no runs, and punching out one. SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, R, .353) had three hits in this one, and 3B Erick Monzon (3B, RBI, .278) and DH Wladimir Balentien (2 2B, R, .265), who both seemed to be scuffling lately, had two each.

Beloit 6 (MIN), Wisconsin 7 (thirteen innings)
RHP Aaron Jensen (5.34) had what is becoming a typical start for him, going six and two-thirds innings and allowing five runs on fourteen hits (HR) against five strikeouts. RHP Ivan Blanco (3.67) followed and blew the save, giving up a run on two hits, two wild pitches, and a walk against three strikeouts over the next four innings, and RHP Stephen Grasley (3.97, W) finally earned the win after two and a third innings of perfect relief in which he struck out two. CF Chris Colton (2B, 2 R, .467) led the way with four hits, but the three hits and three walks by RF Mike Wilson (2B, HR, 5 RBI, .266), one of them with the bases loaded to win the game, make him the player of the game.

Everett 6, Boise 0 (CHC)
RHP Nick Allen (2.34) fired an eight-inning shutout, allowing runners to reach via just three hits and a hit batter while striking out four. Fourteen groundouts will do that for you. RHP Juan Colon (1.50) pitched the final inning, and oddly enough, he had three groundouts as well. DH Chao Kuan Wu (R, RBI, .278) and RF Michael Saunders (3B, HR, 3 RBI, .233) each had two hits, and 1B Jeff Flaig (2B, RBI, .333) and LF Casey Craig (3B, R, .310) had extra-base knocks. The Aquasox dipped into the college signings again to bring up SS Robert Hudson (RBI, .000) and 3B Ron Prettyman (R, .250), who both walked in their debut game. I haven’t heard what other moves have been made just yet, but it seems like there should have been a few…

Surprise Rangers 12, Peoria Mariners 7
RHP Chia-an Huang (9.53, L) got hammered for the second appearance in a row, giving up nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits (2 HR) and two walks with three strikeouts in four innings of work. LHP Daniel Schwab (4.50) went the next two frames, giving up a run on a hit and two walks against a K, and LHP Jose Suriel (7.88) gave up two runs on two hits and a walk in the two innings after that. RHP John Sullivan (7.50) gave up a hit and a walk in the ninth. The offense was good, but not good enough, as 2B Juan Guzman (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, E, .333) and CF Sam Bradford Jr. (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .270) had three hits each, and C Nick Prosise (RBI, E, .250), DH Curtis Ledbetter (2B, RBI, .286), SS Jeff Dominguez (2B, E, .150), and LF Marquise Liverpool (2B, 2 R, .250) had a pair apiece. Four errors also contributed to the loss.

Was just checking the Peoria roster and it looks like we’ll be due for a George Sherrill appearance soon…

Venoco #1 6 (HOU), Aguirre 9
Some unlikely heroes on the pitching staff helped to win this game. RHP Alfredo Venagas (2.90) gave up five runs on four hits, two wild pitches, two hit batters, and a walk against two strikeouts in just a couple of frames of work. RHP Alejandro Gutierrez (3.07) then went the next three innings only giving up one hit and striking out four and RHP Jorge Acosta (3.55), likewise, one-hit the Astros over the three following innings, giving up one walk and striking out three. To make things even crazier, RHP Diomny Gaetano (0.52) gave up a run on two hits while striking out two in the ninth, and that’s the first run that’s scored against him this season. With a bats, there were some similarly unusual performances, like CF/RF Nicomedes Gomez (3B, R, 4 RBI, CS. .239) leading the way with two hits and two walks, and 2B Terry Serrano (R, 2 RBI, .217) and LF William Ortiz (R, RBI, .290) each had one hit and two walks. All told, the Astros’ pitchers gave away thirteen walks.

  Game Recaps (7/3/05)

Colorado Springs (COL), 11, Tacoma 9, (twelve innings)
RHP Cha Seung Baek (4.52) went five innings in his start and gave up six runs on ten hits and two walks against two Ks. RHP Michael Bumstead (5.40) followed and gave up three runs on three hits and two walks with a strikeout over the next two innings. RHP Jeff Heaverlo (5.66) pitched three+ innings after that and gave up three hits and two walks while striking out two, but LHP Jared Thomas (4.46, L) lost it after giving up two runs on two hits (2 HR!) against three strikeouts in the final two innings. On offense, CF Jamal Strong (2B, R, RBI, .310), RF Abraham Nunez (R, .262), C Wiki Gonzalez (HR, 3 R, .337), and 3B Justin Leone (HR, 3 RBI, .282) each had two hits.

Frisco 2 (TEX), San Antonio 3
RHP Jon Huber (4.72, W) went seven innings and gave up a run on six hits and three walks against four strikeouts. LHP Cesar Jimenez (3.17) struck out one in the eight, but also gave up two before he was pulled for RHP Emiliano Fruto (3.15), who would give up one run on two hits and a walk against a strikeout over the next inning and two-thirds. RF T.J. Bohn (R, .300) is becoming a force again, with another three hits on the night, and SS Adam Jones (R, .275) and CF Gary Harris (RBI, .277) had two each. The hitting streak by LF Jaime Bubela (R, .289) is still going…

Inland Empire 6, Bakersfield 2 (TEX)
LHP Ryan Feierabend (4.85, E, PO, W) went five innings and allowed runners to reach via five hits and three walks while he struck out four. RHP Greg Wear (4.41) got into some trouble over the next three innings, giving up two runs on two hits (2 HR!) and a walk against two Ks, but LHP Troy Cate (0.00) came in and struck out the side in the ninth. SS Asdrubal Cabrera (3B, R, .300) led the way with three hits, while CF Sebastien Boucher (2 R, .300) and LF Carlos Arroyo (CS, .366) had two each. Boucher also walked twice. C Chris Collins (2B, R, RBI, .252) added a double to the mix.

Wisconsin 3, Fort Wayne 8 (SD)
RHP Randy Frye (6.43, L) gave up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits (HR) and a walk with two strikeouts in five innings. RHP Roman Martinez (4.26) went the last three and gave up a run on three hits (HR) and a walk with two strikeouts. With the bats, 1B Brandon Green (R, .217), RF Mike Wilson (R, .259), and C Omar Falcon (2 RBI, .281) all had two hits, and CF Josh Womack (HR, .252) had a home run.

I didn’t note this earlier, but when Donny Langdon joined the T-Rats recently, LHP Kendall Bergdall was released. I ragged on Bergdall a lot for his walks, but I still hope he finds a place in another organization, and regains some of his control there.

Vancouver 6 (OAK), Everett 3
RHP Eric Carter (3.75) went just three innings tonight, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits, a wild pitch, a hit batted, and four walks with one strikeout. RHP Jon Lockwood (0.00) followed him with three innings in which he only allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three. LHP Rollie Gibson (2.08) had a walk and a strikeout in his inning and third, but RHP Cory Koliscak (6.23, L) would give up three runs over the next inning and two-thirds on three hits (HR) to lose the game. 1B Chao Kuan Wu (R, .214) had two hits in the game, RF Alex Gary (2B, .179) had a double, and CF Trevor Heid (2 R, SB, .227) walked twice. SS-3B Reed Eastley (SB, CS, .333) got the call from Peoria and went 1-for-3 with a walk in his debut.

Peoria Mariners 2, Scottsdale Giants 3
LHP Harold Williams (3.21, L) went five innings and allowed a couple of runs on four hits (HR), a wild pitch, and a hit batter while striking out eight, but he still got the loss tonight. Right now, it’s saying the Leury Bonilla followed him, but since RHP Toma Bonilla (4.50) is the pitcher, I’ll say that it was him and he went three innings and gave up a run on a hit and four walks with one strikeout. The offense was just ugly today, with only four hits total, so if I have to single out one guy who performed decently, I’ll go with SS Juan Guzman (R, SB, .286), who didn’t have a hit, but did walk, steal a base, and score.
