  Game Recaps (7/14/06)

Tacoma 6, Portland 5 (SD – 8)
RHP Francisco Cruceta (4.15, W) gave up four runs on six hits (2 HR), a hit batter, and three walks against eight Ks in six and a third innings. RHP Scott Atchison (3.75) scored one of those runs and gave up on of his own on a solo home run, plus a walk and a K in an inning and a third. RHP Jon Huber (1.80, S) got the final four outs, hitting a batter and ringing up two.
3B Scott Youngbauer (2B, R, 2 E, .236), LF Jon Nelson (2 R, 2 SB, .253), and 2B Ismael Castro (3B, 2 RBI, SB, .270) all had two hits, and C Jeff Clement (2B, 2 RBI, .226) had a double.

San Antonio 5, Springfield 2 (STL -2)
RHP Travis Chick (2.84, W) pitched seven strong, giving up two runs on four hits (HR) and three walks while striking out five. LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.88) gave up a hit in the next inning, and then LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (2.92, S) walked two and struck out two in the ninth.
RF Mike Wilson (HR, .372) gets the nod for his two hits, including a his fourth home run, but LF Sebastien Boucher (R, SB, A, .275) also had a hit and three walks, and appears to be turning it around after some serious struggles to start the year. CF Wladimir Balentien (.259) and SS Erick Monzon (R, .259) both had a hit and a walk. Yeah, I know Wlad’s walk was intentional, but I’m counting it anyway (and he didn’t strike out!).

Lancaster 7 (ARI - 4), Inland Empire 9
LHP Justin Thomas (5.95, W) gave up three runs on seven hits (HR), a hit batter, two walks, and five Ks in five and a third innings. After that, RHP Mumba Rivera (4.30) gave up two runs on three hits (HR) and a walk against three Ks. RHP Juan Done (9.58) let another run score on three hits and a K in the eighth, and LHP Saydel Beltran (6.75) walked the one batter he faced in the ninth before RHP Jose de la Cruz (3.00, S) came in and gave up two hits to score that run, though he would strike out one and eventually record the save.
LF Casey Craig (2B, R, 2 RBI, .367), RF Chris Colton (2B, R, .255), 2B Matt Rogelstad (R, RBI, .259), 1B Andy Hargrove (HR, 2 R, .235), and SS Jeff Dominguez (2B, 2 RBi, .275) all had two hits, and Jr. Hargrove walked a couple times too. 3B Reed Eastley (2B, R, 2 RBI, .278) added a double and a walk.

Wisconsin 2, Peoria 4 (CHC + 2)
RHP Marwin Vega (5.61, W) gave up four runs (two earned) on six hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and two walks against two Ks in four innings of work. LHP Lance Beus (1.35) gave up a hit, threw a wild pitch, and struck out three in the next two and a third innings, and RHP Roman Martinez (4.57) finished the game off without incident after that.
3B Ron Garth (2 2B, R, RBI, .268) had a couple of doubles, and 1B Johan Limonta (2B, .212) had one double.

Everett 2, Spokane 14 (TEX - 5)
RHP Bryan Ball (9.00, L) gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits, a wild pitch, and three walks against two Ks in two innings of work. Bullpen day didn’t work out so well after that, as LHP Rollie Gibson (5.40, E) gave up three runs on four hits (HR), two walks, and four Ks in two innings, and RHP Steven Richard (9.82) gave up four runs on two hits, a wild pitch, two hit batters, and two walks against two Ks in an inning and two-thirds. LHP Greg Nesbit (3.98) gave up three runs (one earned) on two hits, two walks, and two Ks in an inning and a third after that, and LHP Jose Suriel (2.31) gave up a solo home run and one other hit in the eighth.
2B Chirs Minaker (R, SB, .300) and RF Bryan Sabatella (2B, E, .386) both had two hits, and 1B Joe White (.288) had a hit and a walk.

Peoria Mariners 9, Scottsdale Rangers 2 (- 7)
We lucked out on pitching in this one, as RHP Nathan Adcock (0.00, E) made his debut, pitching an inning and giving up a run on a hit, a wild pitch, and a K, and then LHP Tony Butler (0.90, W) pitched the next four innings, giving up a run on four hits, a hit batter, and two walks while striking out seven. Butler’s K/9 is now 15.3, albeit in ten innings. RHP Haley Winter (11.70) pitched the next two innings, giving up a hit, throwing a wild pitch, and striking out two, and then RHP Jared Eichelberger (6.10) struck out four in the final two frames.
For the offense, C Juan Beltran (R, RBI, PO, .400), 1B Gerardo Avila (HR, 2 RBI, .368), 3B Alex Liddi (2B, 3B, 2 R, RBI, .273) and DH Donato Ruiz (R, RBI, .214) all had two hits, and RF Carlos Peguero (2B, R, .312) doubled.

VSL Phillies 1, Aguirre Mariners 0
RHP Alfredo Venegas (2.47) pitched five innings, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out one. RHP Miguel Marquez (1.43 E, L) gave up an unearned run on three hits and three walks against three Ks in the final four innings, and that ended up making the difference.
LF Rayon Lampe (.206) had a couple of hits, and 1B Humberto Espinoza (CS, .297) had a couple of walks.

  Game Recaps (7/13/06)

Tacoma 4, Portland 14 (SD - 7)
LHP Cesar Jimenez (4.07, L) finally had a rough outing, giving up seven runs on ten hits (HR) and a hit batter against five Ks in four and a third innings. RHP Justin Huisman (8.35) returned from wandering the desert to give up four runs on three hits (HR), two walks, and two Ks in an inning and a third, in addition to letting on of Cesar’s runs score. LHP Thom Oldham (4.63) let another run score in the next inning on two hits (HR), a walk, and two Ks. RHP Mike Flannery (0.00) struck out one in the ninth.
RF Chris Snelling (HR, .288), 3B Scotty Baseball (HR, .232), and LF Jon Nelson (HR, .237) all had home runs, but only Scotty’s was an inside-the-park home run. I saw it on TV, and Cust and Kennard Jones trying to go after that ball was pretty amusing. 2B Ismael Castro (2B, .242) had a double and a walk.

San Antonio 7, Arkansas 6 (ANA - 1)
LHP Ryan Feierabend (4.25, PO, W) gave up two runs on five hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and two walks against seven Ks in six innings of work. RHP Stephen Kahn (5.91) gave up two runs on two walks and a hit batter in the next inning+, though he did ring up all the batters he recorded an out on. RHP Craig James (1.60) didn’t help things, giving up two hits to score Kahn’s runs, but LHP Eric O’Flaherty (1.29, S) managed to fight back, letting a run score against James, but giving up only one more on two hits, a hit batter, a couple walks, and a couple Ks in two innings of work. O’Flaherty got that final fly out with the bases loaded.
RF Wladimir Balentien (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .258) had a couple of hits, including his fifteenth home run. LF Mike Wilson (E, .365) also had two, and 2B Yung-chi Chen (2B, .292), DH Jason Bourgeois (3B, 2 R, RBI, .273), and 3B Matt Tuiasosopo (2B, R, RBI, .214) all had extra-base hits.

Wisconsin 6, Peoria 4 (CHC + 1)
LHP Jose Escalona (3.74, W) gave up two unearned runs on five hits, a wild pitch, a walk, and six punchouts in five and one-third innings. RHP Juan Colon (0.00) gave up a hit and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning, and then RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (2.70) pitched two innings, allowing two hits and ringing up three. RHP Brian Kappel (12.00) gave up two runs on three hits, two walks, and a K in the ninth, but the lead was preserved.
SS Robby Hudson (2B, HR, .295) had three hits in this one, and C Adam Moore (2B, R, .158) had a double and two walks. 1B Jeff Flaig (2B, R, 2 RBI, .205) had a double too, while DH Johan Limonta (.210) just had the two walks.

Everett 5, Spokane 4 (TEX - 6)
RHP Ricky Orta (4.15, W) gave up a run on four hits while striking out five in five innings of work. Not bad, but let’s see him do it against one of the Western Division teams… RHP Ari Kafka (6.75) gave up an unearned run on a hit, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and a walk in the sixth, and then RHP Joe Kantakevich (3.97) gave up a run on three hits against a K in the next two innings. RHP Kameron Mickolio (2.61, S) struck out two in the ninth for his second save.
3B Manelik Pimentel (RBI, E, .273) and C Chao Kuan Wu (R, RBI, E, .250) both contributed two hits with the bats and not so much with the gloves. I guess Pimentel’s doing all right considering I believe he’s mostly been a 1B in the past. 2B Chris Minaker (HR, 2 RBI, .284) had his first pro home run in the third.

Peoria Mariners 2, Mesa Angels 3 (0)
RHP Cory Koliscak (0.00) started it out by giving up a hit in the first inning, and then LHP Aric Van Gaalen (2.45) pitched the next five, giving up the three runs on eight hits, a balk, and a walk against five strikeouts. RHP Kyle Parker (6.94) pitched the final two, giving up a hit and striking out one.
CF Wellington Dotel (RBI, .266) and DH Stan Posluszny (3B, R, .328) both had two hits and RF Carlos Peguero (SB, CS, .317) had a hit and two walks. I suspect that at some point, AZL pitchers may stop throwing him strikes.

Aguirre Mariners 1, VSL Twins/Blue Jays 4 (- 16)
LHP Kervin Montbrum (2.61, PO, L) pitched three+ innings, giving up a pair of runs (one earned) on a hit, a wild pitch, two hit batters, and a walk against four Ks. RHP Rhonny Acosta (5.79) gave up two runs over the next five innings on three hits and a hit batter while striking out one. He also scored both of Montbrum’s runs.
C Israel Nunez (.367) contributed a couple of hits, 1B Humberto Espinoza (3B, R, .300) had a triple, and CF Terry Serrano (SB, CS, .198) had a couple of walks.

  Game Recaps (7/12/06)

San Antonio 6, Arkansas 5 (ANA 0)
RHP Yorman Bazardo (3.21) pitched six and a third innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits (2 HR) and a walk against four Ks. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (3.18, W) struck out five of the eight batters he faced for the win.
DH Mike Wilson (HR, 2 RBI, .352) had three hits and a walk, 2B Yung-chi Chen (2 2B, R, .302), RF Wladimir Balentien (2B, 2 R, RBI, .255), and 1B Marshall Hubbard (RBI, .333) all had two hits, and CF Sebastien Boucher (HR, .247) had his first home run of the season.

Oswaldo Navarro has been called up to Tacoma.

Rancho Cucamonga 16 (ANA – 2), Inland Empire 1
RHP Aaron Jensen (7.02) got hammered, giving up nine runs (six earned) on ten hits, two wild pitches, and two walks against three Ks in three innings of work. RHP Aaron Trolia (6.84) gave up four runs on seven hits and two Ks in the next two frames, and then RHP Justin Jordan (5.44) continued the trend, with two more runs on five hits and a K. RHP Joe Woerman (3.38) escaped having given up an unearned run on three walks against three Ks in the final two innings.
1B-3B Reed Eastley (.279) and DH Casey Craig (RBI, .364) both had a hit and a walk.

Wisconsin 15, Peoria 2 (CHC+ 2)
LHP David Asher (3.73, W) took the starting opportunity and ran with it, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out four in five innings of work. RHP Edgar Guaramato (6.42) walked one and struck out one in the next two innings, and then LHP Lance Beus (1.53) gave up a hit in the eighth. LHP Harold Williams (3.31) gave up two runs on three hits and a wild pitch, but curiously, no walks. He also struck out two.
3B Jeff Flaig (2 2B, 2 R, 4 RBI, .2045) led the charge with four hits in the game and 2B Luis Valbuena (2B, R, RBI, SB, .283) and LF Kuo-hui Lo (2B, 3B, 3 R, SB, .417) both had three hits and a walk. SS Robby Hudson (2B, 2 R, RBI, .289), RF Michael Saunders (2B, R, 2 RBI, .226), 1B Johan Limonta (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .217), and C Travis Scott (2 2B, 2 R, RBI, PB, .143) all had two hits.

Everett 5, Spokane 4 (TEX - 5)
RHP Natividad Dilone (4.87, W) gave up three runs on five hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against three strikeouts in five innings of work. RHP Andrew Fiorenza (0.00) struck out one in the next three frames, and then RHP Doug Fister (0.90, S) gave up an unearned run on two hits and struck out one in the ninth. Fister and Nesbit are moving out of the rotation in exchange for Orta and Ball, as a means of easing their workloads.
2B Chris Minaker (2 2B, 2 R, RBI, .286), 1B Joe White (R, .295), and SS Ogui Diaz (2B, R, .232) all had three hits. RF Bryan Sabatella (2B, 2 RBI, .289) had a double and a walk.

Peoria Padres 13 (+ 7), Peoria Mariners 6
RHP Doug Salinas (2.30, PO) walked one and struck out one in an inning of work. RHP Robert Harmon (10.24, PO) let a run cross the plate on a solo home run, in addition to a walk, a wild pitch, and two hit batters against a K in three innings. RHP Marquis Pettis (3.00) gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits (HR) and wild pitch against two Ks in the next three innings, but LHP Will Brown (9.00, L) suffered a severe meltdown after that, and let ten runs (nine earned) score on nine hits, a hit batter, and three walks against tow Ks in the final two innings.
RF Stan Poslusznny (.315) and SS Marcos Villezcas (2 R, .278) both had two hits, and CF Wellington Dotel (HR, SB, .250) had a home run and a walk.

Aguirre Mariners 9, VSL Tigers/Marlins 5 (- 9)
RHP Yoervis Medina (4.83) gave up three runs on five hits (HR) and a K through two innings of work. RHP Felix Correa (5.82) gave up two runs on a hit, two wild pitches, and three walks with one K in the next inning, and then RHP Jesse Nava (2.49, W) pitched four after that, with two hits, two wild pitches, two hit batters, two walks, and three Ks to show for it. RHJP Alfredo Venegas (2.72, S) would give up a hit and ring up three over the next two innings for the save.
SS Terry Serrano (2B, 4 R, RBI, 2 SB, .202) and DH Cesar Fuentes (2B, 2 RBI, .290) each had four hits, 3B Edilio Colina (HR, 2 R, 5 RBI, .276) had two, including his first home run. RF Nicomedes Gomez (2B, R, .261) had a double in his lone plate appearance.

  Game Recaps (7/11/06)

San Antonio 1, Arkansas 7 (ANA + 1)
LHP Travis Blackley (4.46, L) was chased pretty quickly, lasting only two+ innings and giving up six runs on six hits, a wild pitch, three hit batters, a walk, and two Ks. RHP Chad Fillinger (2.42) pitched the next four, giving up a run on three hits while striking out four. RHP Stephen Kahn (5.31) gave up a hit, threw a wild pitch, and struck out two in an inning after that, and LHP Eric O’Flaherty (1.04) pitched two-thirds of an inning before being ejected along with the manager, presumably because he hit a batter. LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.93) got the final out.
LF Jason Bourgeois (.275) had three hits and RF Mike Wilson (2B, A, .328) doubled and walked. DH Wladimir Balentien (.252) walked twice, and now had 36 walks to 91 strikeouts. While he’d be chasing the single-season K record if he were at the major league level, having that kind of ratio of walks to Ks isn’t something that he’s done since he was in the Arizona League posting a 1.021 OPS, and this was one of the tougher leaps to make in the minor leagues. He’s not sinking, and while the average is a bit lacking, he’s doing a little better than just treading water.

Rancho Cucamonga 4 (ANA – 3), Inland Empire 3 (eleven innings)
Every few months, RHP Cibney Bello (4.23) does something like this. He pitched six innings and gave up a run on six hits (HR), a wild pitch, and two walks against eight Ks. I don’t get it. RHP Mumba Rivera (4.11) blew another opportunity after that, giving up a run on a solo home run to go with a walk and two Ks in an inning and two-thirds. He wouldn’t be the last, though. LHP Saydel Beltran (0.00) gave up a hit and a walk in an inning and a third for his Cal League debut. RHP Jon Lockwood (3.65) had an unearned run score against him after a wild pitch and two walks in a third of an inning, and RHP Juan Done (9.64, L) scored that and the winning run on two hits and two Ks in an inning and two-thirds.
DH Reed Eastley (RBI, .278) and 1B Andy Hargrove (2B, RBI, E, .194) both had two hits, and RF Chris Colton (2B, PO, .255), CF Casey Craig (2B, .365), and 3B-1B Matt Rogelstad (3B, R, RBI, .262) had extra-base hits.

Aguirre Mariners 3, VSL Orioles/White Sox 2 (+ 5)
RHP Yovanny Olivero (2.19, W) gave up a run on nine hits, a walk, and three Ks in five innings of work. RHP Rhonny Acosta (6.18) gave up an unearned run on two hits and a hit batter with one strikeout in an inning and a third. RHP Miguel Marquez (1.59, S) gave up two hits and a walk while striking out two in the final two and two-thirds.
C Israel Nunez (RBI, .377) had three hits and a walk for the offense, and CF Terry Serrano (2 SB, RBI, .169) had a couple of hits. Don’t get too excited about Nunez, as he had 50 at-bats coming into the game, though he could be one to keep an eye on.

As for the promised DSL update… IF Luis Nunez is still leading the division with a .385 average, .042 higher than anyone else, and also leads in hits (40), runs (26), doubles (8), and stolen bases (12). There are only three other M’s on the offensive leaderboard, with Alfredo Mateo leading in triples (4), Maximo Mendez coming in second in both runs (23) and stolen bases (10), and Joel Mendez coming in sixth in batting with a .286 average. That’s not to say that the M’s aren’t performing well offensively; they lost a lot of power with Dotel and Peguero moving to the states, but as a team, they’ve been unusually OBP heavy, posting a OBP that’s almost a hundred points higher than their team average.
As usual for the pitching, at least in the past three years, LHP Eddy Fernandez has snuck up to first in ERA (0.92), third in strikeouts (34), and is seventh in winning percentage at 4-1. He’s only walked four batters in 39 innings pitched. Among the six ahead of him in winning percentage are Walter Suriel and Michael Pineda, both M’s prospects who haven’t taken a loss yet and are putting up some decent numbers in limited time. Ariel Alcantara is now fourth in the ERA race (1.57), and LHP Edwards Paredes leads the division with ten saves. The team has gone 10-6 since the last update.

  Game Recaps (7/10/06)

San Antonio 6, Arkansas 8 (ANA 0)
LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (2.42) pitched six and two-thirds innings and gave up five runs on seven hits (3 HR!), a walk, a hit batter, and eight strikeouts. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (4.15, PO, L) scored two of those and three of his own (two earned) on four hits against three Ks.
SS Oswaldo Navarro (2B, R, .267), LF Mike Wilson (RBI, .328), and 2B Yung-chi Chen (.294) all had three hits, and RF Wladimir Balentien (2 R, E, .254) and 1B Marshall Hubbard (2 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, .333) had two hits and a walk each. Nice to see those new Futures Game vets contributing. CF Sebastien Boucher (2B, R, .248) added a double.

Rancho Cucamonga 3 (ANA – 4), Inland Empire 4
LHP Shawn Nottingham (3.80) pitched eight innings, giving up a run on six hits, two wild pitches, three hit batters, and eight strikeouts. RHP Jose de la Cruz (3.08, W) blew the save, giving up a couple of runs on two hits in the ninth, but got the win anyway after a late rally.
Ninth inning!
Inland Empire Bottom 9th

Lansing 4 (TOR – 3), Wisconsin 0
RHP Nick Allen (2.45) gave up eight hits, hit a batter, and walked two through six innings of work, but somehow managed to avoid giving up any runs and struck out four. RHP Roman Martinez (4.95, L) let a couple cross the plate on three hits, a hit batter, a walk, and a K in two innings of work, and RHP Brian Kappel (9.00) gave up a couple more on two hits and a K in the ninth.
2B Luis Valbuena (.278) had a couple of hits for the offense. Not much else going on.

Eugene 5 (SD 0), Everett 6
LHP Steve Uhlmansiek (2.38) didn’t have it together today, giving up five runs on seven hits, a hit batter, and three walks against four Ks in three and two-thirds innings of work. Fortunately, the bullpen was ready to pick it up, and RHP Justin Souza (4.05) pitched two and one-third innings, giving up a hit and striking out two, before giving way to RHP Aaron Solomon (0.00) and then LHP Jose Suriel (1.69), who both pitched an inning and had a hit, a walk, and a K to show for it, though Solomon also threw a wild pitch. Suriel gave up his hit to open the ninth, and RHP Steven Richard (0.00) threw a wild pitch and struck out the final two batters for the win.
Ninth inning went like this…
Everett Bottom 9th
· Pitcher Change: Jonathan Kirby replaces Stephen Faris.
· Leury Bonilla doubles (8) on a line drive to left fielder Chad Huffman.
· Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Dean Zorn replaces Leury Bonilla.
· Ogui Diaz out to catcher Luany Sanchez. Ogui Diaz out on batter interference.
· Gavin Dickey strikes out swinging.
· Christopher Minaker singles on a line drive to center fielder Michael Epping. Dean Zorn scores.
2B Chris Minaker (2B, R, RBI, .259) had two other hits aside from the walk-off single, and 3B Leury Bonilla (2 2B, R, .194) had another double in addition to the one that opened the ninth. 1B Joe White (HR, 2 RBI, .263) and DH Curtis Ledbetter (HR, .250) had back-to-back home runs in the third.

Scottsdale Giants 8 (+ 7), Peoria Mariners 2
Two days of facing the top two teams in the league (M’s are about third), but they just couldn’t quite beat them. RHP Jeff Harris (0.00) pitched another inning, giving up a hit and striking out one, and RHP Justin Huisman (1.80) pitched the next two innings, giving up a run on four hits, a walk, and three Ks. After that, RHP Chris Tillman (0.00) made hits debut, giving up a hit and throwing a wild pitch. I’m a little bit surprised he got in before Adcock. RHP Carlos Javier (6.43, L) took the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits (HR), a wild pitch, two hit batters, and three walks against three Ks in three and two-thirds innings. I expected better out of him this year, but there’s still time. RHP Rocky Collis (3.12) gave up three unearned runs on two hits in the final inning an a third.
DH Stan Posluszny (HR, .300) had another three hits, and may be working his way onto the radar as he regains his form. CF Wellington Dotel (2B, CS, .246) added a double and two walks, and 3B Jose Morban (3B, R, E, .182) had a triple as he continued his rehab stint.

Aguirre Mariners 7, VSL Pirates 7 (+ 10)
RHP Miguel Marquez (1.69) lasted only an inning and two-thirds, giving up four unearned runs on a hit batter, a wild pitch, and six walks with just one strikeout. RHP Rhonny Acosta (6.49) had to come in to strike out the final batter of the second, though he threw a wild pitch in the process. RHP Yorjans Chourio (2.79, PO) gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits, a balk, and three walks against three Ks in three and one-third innings. RHP Carlos Sanchez (1.80, PO) let one of those score, and pitched the rest of the distance, giving up one more hit, hitting a batter, walking three, and ringing up two.
2B Cesar Fuentes (R, 2 E .275) and RF Rayon Lampe (R, .200) both had three hits, and 1B Pablo Orfila (2 2B, 2 RBI, .270) had a couple of doubles.

VSL Pirates 1 (+ 9), Aguirre Mariners 2
RHP Juan Ramirez (2.16, PO, W) pitched five and two-thirds innings, with five hits, a hit batter, a wild pitch, two walks, and six strikeouts to show for it. LHP Jose Jimenez (2.94, S) gave up a run on two hits, a wild pitch, and two walks with one strikeout while he pitched the rest of the way.
2B-SS Terry Serrano (R, SB, .160) had a couple of hits in the game.

  Game Recaps (7/9/06)

OF Wladimir Balentien had a couple of doubles in the Futures Game. The Times has the story.

Portland 5 (SD - 8), Tacoma 6
LHP Bobby Livingston (4.62, PO, W) got through five innings, giving up four runs on ten hits and two walks against a lone K. RHP Scott Atchison (3.57) gave up two hits, including a solo home run, and struck out one in two innings after that, and then LHP Cesar Jimenez (3.50), making a relief appearance before the break, struck out one in the eighth. RHP Jon Huber (1.93, S) gave up two hits and struck out one in the ninth.
RF Chris Snelling (R, CS, .289), 1B Bryan Lahair (R, .333), and 2B Hunter Brown (4 RBI, .259) all had two hits and a walk. CF Adam Jones (R, 2 A, .277) had a couple of walks and two throws to get runners at home and third.

Midland 4 (OAK - 1), San Antonio 5 (eleven innings)
RHP Travis Chick (3.18) gave up two runs on three hits, a wild pitch, six walks, and four Ks through six and two-thirds innings. RHP Stephen Kahn (5.59) gave up another run on two hits and a walk in an inning and a third+, and RHP Craig James (1.60, BS) scored one of those and let another cross on a hit and four walks in three innings of work. LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.95) gave up a hit and walked one in the eleventh.
2B Jason Bourgeois (2B, 2 R, RBI, SB, .265) had three hits and CF Sebastien Boucher (2 R, RBI, SB, .249) and SS Oswaldo Navarro (2B, R, RBI, .261) both had two hits and a walk.

Inland Empire 11, Lancaster 9 (ARI 0)
LHP Justin Thomas (6.09, 2 PO, W) threw another shaky start, giving up seven runs on fourteen hits (2 HR), a walk, and five Ks through six and two-thirds. RHP Aaron Trolia (6.10) then pitched a third+ and gave up two runs on four hits, and RHP Jose de la Cruz (3.16) scored one of these, giving up a walk and ringing up four in two innings of work.
The Sixers managed to claw their way out of the sizable hole they dug this time around. RF Chris Colton (2 2B, HR, 5 RBI, CS, .257) led the charge with four hits and 2B Jack Arroyo (3 2B, 4 R, RBI, SB, .333) had three doubles and a walk. 1B Reed Eastley (2B, 3 R, RBI, .276) and C J.B. Tucker (3B, R, 2 RBI, .231) both had extra-base hits and two walks. DH Omar Falcon (.245) had two walks too. CF Brent Johnson (2B, R, .287) added a double.

Forgot to mention this in the recaps last night, but Ron Prettyman broke his hand and should be out for a while. RHP Mike Hrynio is moving to the DL with shoulder tenderness, and LHP Saydel Beltran will be called up from Everett to replace him. It’s not the best move considering Beltran’s stats, but he’s already 23 and they might as well try him out up there.

Lansing 0 (TOR – 4), Wisconsin 3
Two wins in a row is definitely a cause for some sort of celebration, in this case. Last time, I said LHP Paul Fagan (4.32, W) was typically either on or off, and it was a matter of getting his stuff to where he could control it at least most of the time. This was one of those “on” starts, and he gave up just three hits while striking out five in seven innings of work. RHP Juan Colon (0.00) gave up two hits in the eighth, and then RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (3.86, S) gave up a hit and struck out one for the save.
LF Michael Saunders (2B, 2 R, .223) and DH Johan Limonta (3B, R, .189) both had two hits and a walk.

Eugene 10 (SD + 1), Everett 8 (ten innings)
I caught a little bit of this on the car radio today, and it seemed as if RHP Mike Schilling (1.80) wasn’t quite hitting his spots, though he managed to survive and give up only two runs on six hits, a wild pitch, a balk, a walk, and three Ks. After that, RHP Bryan Ball (9.00, BS) botched it, giving up two runs on three hits, a hit batter, and two Ks in an inning of work. The Aquasox rallied back, but RHP Kameron Mikolio (2.89, BS) ended up letting three more runs score on three hits (HR), a balk, and a walk. LHP Rollie Gibson (2.84, L) pitched an inning and two-thirds after that and gave up three runs (one earned) on a hit, a hit batter, a walk, and two Ks, and RHP Andrew Fiorenza (0.00) scored all three after a walk and an error before recording the final fly out.
2B Chris Minaker (2B, 3B, R, RBI, .226) and LF-CF Gavin Dickey (2B, 3 R, .283) had three hits, DH Joe White (.259) had two hits and a walk, and CF Greg Halman (3B, R, 2 RBI, .256) and 1B Manelik Pimentel (HR, 2 RBI, .250) both had extra-base hits. Pimentel also walked twice.

Peoria Mariners 3, Scottsdale Royals 8 (+ 6)
LHP Tony Butler (0.00) shut down one of the league’s best offenses (behind the M’s and the Giants) and held them to two walks and a wild pitch while he struck out three in three innings. After that, things fell off, and RHP Jared Eichelberger (7.56, L) gave up two runs on two hits (HR) and a walk in two innings, followed by RHP Haley Winter (14.62), who gave up six runs (four earned) on seven hits, a wild pitch, a walk, and two Ks in three innings.
DH Stan Posluszny (2B, R, RBI, .261) and CF Donato Ruiz (2B, R, RBI, .125) both had doubles. Avila wore the Golden Sombrero today and finally dropped his average to below .400.

Aguirre Mariners 0, VSL Phillies 2 (+ 10)
It’s a bit unusual that the VSL would play a game on Sunday, but necessary in this case. LHP Leonardo Rodriguez (2.86) had two hits, a hit batter, two walks, and three Ks to show for five innings of work. RHP Felix Correa (5.23) gave up two runs on a hit, a wild pitch, and two walks in a third of an inning, but LHP Kervin Montbrum (2.45, PO) let one of those score, and walked two and struck out two going the rest of the way.
SS Cesar Fuentes (.261) had a couple of hits.

  Game Recaps (7/8/06)

Portland 1 (SD - 7), Tacoma 6
RHP Cha Seung Baek (2.96) gave up one hit, walked four, and struck out six in seven innings of work. RHP Mike Flannery (0.00) allowed three hits in the eighth, and then RHP Jon Huber (2.04) gave up a solo shot and struck out one in the ninth.
CF Adam Jones (2B, HR, .280) and C Jeff Clement (R, .231) both had two hits.

Midland 4 (OAK 0), San Antonio 1
LHP Ryan Feierabend (4.33, L) gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits (HR), a hit batter, and three walks against seven Ks. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (2.57) gave up an unearned run on a hit and a walk in the next inning and a third, scoring one of Feierabend’s runs, and then LHP Eric O’Flaherty (1.07) hit a batter, walked one, and struck out two in the final inning and a third.
DH Jason Bourgeois (2B, R, PO, .256) had two hits, and RF Mike Wilson (2B, .304) and SS Oswaldo Navarro (2B, .254) both doubled.

Inland Empire 5, Lancaster 12 (ARI + 1)
The Sixers kept taking hits from the Lancaster offense, with RHP Justin Jordan (5.06, E, L) giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits (HR) in three and one-third innings. RHP Mumba Rivera (4.07, PO) gave up four runs on four hits (HR) and three walks with one K in the next three innings. It appears he’s off-kilter again. RHP Joe Woerman (4.50) let three of those score, however, and one more of his own on the three hits he gave up while finishing the game.
RF Chris Colton (2B, 3 R, RBI, A, .245) and LF Casey Craig (3B, R, RBI, .372) both had two hits. Colton walked once, while Craig drew two free passes. C Brian Schweiger (RBI, E, .333) had two walks as well.

Lansing 5 (TOR – 3), Wisconsin 8
The last two wins both belong to RHP Marwin Vega (5.70, W), who gave up all five runs (two earned) on six hits, two wild pitches, a walk, and six Ks. LHP Harold Williams (3.08) got it all together for three innings after that, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out four. RHP Brian Kappel (0.00, S) had a strikeout and notched the save in the ninth.
I have to give credit to the T-Rats offense in this one. SS Robby Hudson (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .292) was 4-for-4 batting ninth in the order, C Nick Prosise (2 RBI, .242) had three hits, RF Michael Saunders (2 R, RBI, 2 SB, .217) and 2B Luis Valbuena (3B, 2 R, RBI, .279) both had two hits, with Saunders also walking twice, and CF Alex Gary (HR, .200) had a home run.

You may have noticed Kappel’s name above, so to recap the moves of the day, Kappel, RHP Juan Colon, C/DH Adam Moore, and OF Kuo-hui Lo were all moved up to Wisconsin and DH Curtis Ledbetter was sent to Everett. There’s also another new face on the Aquasox staff, but more on that in a moment. Sorry to those of you who didn’t have a chance to check Moore or Lo in Everett.

Eugene 1 (SD 0), Everett 8
LHP Greg Nesbit (3.79) pitched four innings, giving up a run on five hits while striking out four. RHP Ricky Orta (7.36, W) earned his first pro win by going two and two-thirds innings, giving up one hit and striking out two, and after that, RHP Joe Kantakevich (3.86) gave up a hit and struck out one in the next inning and a third. RHP Steven Richard (0.00) gave up a hit and walked one in his pro debut in the ninth inning.
CF Greg Halman (2B, 2 R, RBI, SB, .257), 1B Manelik Pimentel (HR, 4 RBI, E, .250), DH Bryan Sabatella (R, .400), and LF Gavin Dickey (3B, R, 2 RBI, SB, .245) all had two hits. RF Jose Graterol (R, A, .154) had two walks and got a runner out at the plate on a throw.

Mesa Cubs 3 (- 8), Peoria Mariners 5
LHP Aric Van Gaalen (1.74, W) had another solid start, going five innings and giving up just a run on two hits against four Ks. RHP Kyle Parker (8.38) let another run score on two hits, two walks, and two Ks in a couple innings of work, and then LHP Will Brown (2.00, S) gave up an unearned run on three hits and two walks against two Ks in the final two innings.
RF Carlos Peguero (2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .346) had three hits in the game, and C Erwin Jacobo (2B, RBI, .286) had a double and walked.

Aguirre Mariners 2, VSL Mets 3 (+ 5) (ten innings)
RHP Alfredo Venegas (2.83, E) pitched six and a third innings and let two runs score on two hits, three hit batters, and two walks against three Ks. RHP Jesse Nava (2.95, BS, L) would get the loss, giving up a run on three hits, a wild pitch, and three walks against four Ks, in addition to letting one of Venegas’ runners score.
C Israel Nunez (HR, PB, .386) had three hits and a walk and 1B Pablo Orfila (2 2B, .273) had a pair of doubles.
