  Game Recaps (7/29/05)

Transactions are done. They should be up within the next couple of days. In the meantime… system sweep!

Iowa 4 (CHC –10), Tacoma 5
LHP Damian Moss (4.21) went the first six innings, giving up a run on two hits and three walks against five Ks. LHP George Sherrill (2.28) struck out two in the next inning, but RHP Sean Green (4.94) couldn’t get an out in the eighth, walking three before getting pulled. RHP Masao Kida (3.48, W) would score all three on a couple of hits, but he also struck out four and picked up the win. DH Chris Snelling (HR, 2 RBI, .371) led the charge with three hits, 1B Greg Dobbs (RBI, .330) had two, and RF Abraham Nunez (2 R, .260) walked three times.

Midland 4 (OAK + 5), San Antonio 6
LHP Jared Thomas (5.73) went three and one third innings, giving up a couple runs on six hits (HR) and two walks against three strikeouts. LHP Chris Key (1.62) went three after that, allowing two runs to score on five hits and a walk against three Ks. RHP R.D. Spiehs (2.55) and RHP Emiliano Fruto (2.56, S) split the last two and two-thirds, and both gave up a hit and a walk, but Spiehs struck out two as well. 3B Jesus Guzman (2 R, .277) and DH Nate Espy (2B, R, 2 RBI, .278) both had a couple of hits, and RF Jon Nelson (HR, 2 RBI, .220) had a home run. Everyone in the lineup had a hit.

Inland Empire 13, Rancho Cucamonga 3 (ANA + 2)
RHP Mumba Rivera (7.18, W) went six innings and gave up a run on seven hits and a walk against six Ks. Good to see those strikeouts coming back. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (4.92) went two innings after that, giving up two runs on four hits and a hit batter against a couple of strikeouts, and RHP Jeff Mault (7.20) struck out a batter in the ninth. While LF Sebastien Boucher (RBI, SB, .316) also had three hits, the game ball has to go to SS Erick Monzon (2 HR, 4 R, 6 RBI, .257), who looked like he could have beaten the Quakes on his own. 3B Matt Rogelstad (2 R, CS, .315), DH Carlos Arroyo (R, .326), and 1B Bryan Lahair (2B, 2 R, RBI, .291) added two hits each, but I have to give a serious shout-out to CF Wladimir Balentien (2B, 2 R, .267), who went 1-for-2 with THREE WALKS. It deserves caps.

Wisconsin 7, Burlington 0 (KC + 5)
RHP Ivan Blanco (6.17, W) had a fine start, going six innings and giving up three hits, a wild pitch, two hit batters, and two walks against three strikeouts. LHP Adam Brandt (12.86, S) got the three-inning save after that, giving up one hit and striking out one. On offense, LF Brent Johnson (R, RBI, SB, .294) and 3B Brandon Green (2B, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .231) contributed three hits, CF Chris Colton (R, .348), RF Mike Wilson (2 2B, R, 2 RBI, .265), and 1B Marshall Hubbard (2B, R, RBI, .297) had two, and 2B Yung-chi Chen (2B, RBI, .288) and SS Oswaldo Navarro (2B, R, .268) had doubles.

Tri City 9 (COL – 2), Everett 3
RHP Nick Allen (4.54, L) only made it through three innings, giving up four runs (three earned on six hits, two hit batters, and a walk against a strikeout. LHP Lance Beus (3.80) took the next four innings, giving up a couple runs on five hits and two walks with two more Ks. RHP Stephen Kahn (27.00) didn’t have quite the same luck in this inning as he did in his last one in Peoria, and ended up allowing three runs to score on three hits, a wild pitch, and a walk. RHP Edgar Guaramato (5.17) walked one and struck out two in the ninth. 3B Ron Prettyman (2B, .310), CF David Hall (2B, RBI, .305), and PH-DH Alex Gary (2B, .264) each had a double, but aside from that, there wasn’t much to the game, save for two walks by 1B Reed Eastley (R, RBI, .333).

Peoria Mariners 11, Surprise Royals 9 (+ 1) (eleven innings)
RHP Rich Dorman (9.00) showed some signed he’s getting back on track, going three innings and allowing one hit while he punched out four. RHP Miguel Marquez (9.69) continued to struggle after that, allowing eight runs on seven hits (HR), four wild pitches, and three walks against two strikeouts in just three innings of work. LHP Jose Suriel (5.29) walked two in the next two innings, preserving the lead, but RHP Ari Kafka (3.60, E) would give up an unearned run on two hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against two Ks over the next couple of frames to tie the game. LHP Estelin Soto (4.71) had a hit, a walk, and two strikeouts in extra innings. RF Jose Graterol (2B, R, 4 RBI, CS, .414) had four hits in the game, 3B Leury Bonilla (2 R, CS, .259) and SS Dean Zorn (2B, R, 3 RBI, .269) had three apiece, and 1B Andy Hargrove (2B, 2 R, RBI, .348), CF Donato Ruiz (2B, R, .230), and DH Erwin Jacobo (R, 2 RBI, .216) had two each. Hargrove also walked three times, and his iso OBP is .130+ right now.

Universidad 5 (FLA-WAS – 32), Aguirre 11
RHP Gerardo Esparza (2.61, E, W) went six and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits, two wild pitches, and four walks against three strikeouts. RHP Kelvin Alarcon (1.41) took over for the next inning and a third, giving up a hit and striking out two, and RHP Carlos Figueroa (14.73) struck out two in the ninth. SS Deybis Benitez (3 R, .222), LF William Ortiz (2B, R, 2 RBI, .275), and 1B Gerardo Avila (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .255) had two hits each, and PH-C Jair Fernandez (2B, RBI, .257) doubled as a pinch hitter.

  Marketing 101

Wednesday night, at the Aquasox game, the players were wearing these uniforms, which one of the posters at SportSpot described as "[i]t looks like the movie Tron threw up on them or that they ran through a forest of atomic spider webs."

My question would be, why wear them against Tri City, when they had just wrapped up a series against Eugene?

Baffling.

  Game Recaps (7/27 and 7/28/05)

Iowa 0 (CHC – 8), Tacoma 2
RHP Jorge Campillo (2.71, W) returned to triple-A action and gave up two hits and two walks while striking out five in six innings. RHP Clint Nageotte (1.06) went the next two, giving up a hit and a walk while punching out three, and RHP Masao Kida (3.58, S) walked two, threw a wild pitch, and struck out three in the ninth. 3B Justin Leone (2B, R, RBI, .254) and LF Shin-soo Choo (SB, .265) both had two hits, and CF Jamal Strong (SB, .291) was 1-for-2 with a couple of walks. SS Yuniesky Betancourt (SB, .295), called up today, was 1-for-3 and stole a base.

Iowa 0 (CHC – 9), Tacoma 6
RHP Jeff Harris (2.90, W) tore through a bad Iowa team, giving up just two hits, a hit batter, and two walks through six innings and striking out seven. He also had eight ground outs to three fly outs. LHP Andrew Lorraine (4.53) went the next two and had two each of hits and Ks, and RHP Chris Buglovsky (5.16) had a hit and a strikeout in the ninth. RF Chris Snelling (2B, 3B, 2 R, RBI, A, .366) came up a home run short of the cycle, and CF Jamal Strong (2 R, RBI, .293) and 1B Hunter Brown (2B, R, 2 RBI, .297) had two hits each. DH Abraham Nunez (3B, 2 RBI, .262) added a triple. 2B Jose Lopez (.279) went 1-for-4 in his return to the level.

San Antonio 2, Corpus Christi 8 (HOU + 1)
RHP Juan Sandoval (4.22, E, L) had one of his catastrophic starts, going four and two-thirds innings and giving up eight runs on nine hits (HR), a wild pitch, a hit batter, two walks, and two Ks. But hey, he does pitch to contact… LHP Chris Key (1.25) had a hit, a wild pitch, and a walk over the next inning and a third, and RHP R.D. Spiehs (2.70) finished up the game, giving up a hit along the way. 2B Ismael Castro (2B, HR, .254) had three hits in the game and is slowly coming along. 3B Jesus Guzman (.272) had two, and 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (HR, .255) had a solo home run.

Midland 6 (OAK + 6), San Antonio 2
LHP Thom Oldham (3.42, L) only made it through four innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits (HR) and two walks against five Ks. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (4.72), coming off a rather minor injury, went the next inning and two-thirds, giving up a couple of runs on two hits, a hit batter, and two walks against two strikeouts. LHP Tim Rall (2.38) went an inning and a third after that, giving up a hit and striking out one, and then RHP Renee Cortez (4.01) RHP Emiliano Fruto (2.62) split the last two innings. Both struck out a batter, but Fruto also walked one.

Lancaster 6 (ARI – 3), Inland Empire 1
RHP Chad Fillinger (4.83) got through six innings, but gave up four runs on eight hits (2 HR!) and two walks against seven Ks. RHP Aaron Trolia (4.42) gave up a hit and hit a batter in the next inning, and then RHP Oliver Arias (6.52) gave up a couple runs on three hits (HR) and a walk in the seventh. RHP Craig James (1.29) gave up a hit and struck out two in the ninth. 3B Erick Monzon (2 2B, RBI, .250) and 1B Bryan Lahair (2B, R, .291) both had a couple of hits. RF Sam Bradford Jr. (.000), who went 0-for-3 in his Cal League debut, is now with the Sixers as B.J. Garbe has been released.

Lancaster 6 (ARI – 4), Inland Empire 7
LHP Jason Mackintosh (4.02) was great through six and one-third innings, giving up three runs on four hits (HR) and two hit batters while striking out, but LHP Troy Cate (1.48, W) would get the win after blowing the save, giving up one of Mac’s runs and three unearned of his own on three hits, a wild pitch, a balk, and three walks against two Ks in the next inning and two-thirds. Of course, that meant another save for RHP Craig James (1.13, S), who gave up a hit and only needs a little over an inning of scoreless relief to get his ERA below one on this level as well. 3B Matt Rogelstad (2B, 2 R, RBI, .313) had four hits in the game and 2B Michael Garciaparra (R, 2 RBI, E, .259) had two.

Kane County 4 (OAK 0), Wisconsin 5 (seven innings)
Due to the loss of a few guys, the T-Rats haven’t been faring so well to start the second half, but it’s great to see them sweep a doubleheader. RHP Randy Frye (7.65) went six and two-thirds innings and gave up four runs on eight hits, a wild pitch, a balk, and two walks against one K. LHP Eric O’Flaherty (4.39, W) would get the final flyout and the win with a runner on. The game ended in a sort of unconventional way… so I’ll just cut the game log instead of trying to explain it…

Wisconsin Bottom 7th
· Pitcher Change: Tomas Cabaniel replaces Trent Peterson.
· Brent Johnson doubles (11) on a line drive to right fielder Luis Perez.
· Jack Arroyo reaches on a fielder's choice out, pitcher Tomas Cabaniel to third baseman Myron Leslie. Brent Johnson out at 3rd.
· With Chris Colton batting, Jack Arroyo steals (9) 2nd base.
· With Chris Colton batting, Jack Arroyo steals (10) 3rd base, Jack Arroyo scores. Missed catch error by third baseman Myron Leslie.
Johnson (2B, R, .283) had two hits in the game, as did 3B Yung-chi Chen (2 RBI, .286). SS Matt Tuiasosopo (2B, R, .291) had a double.

Kane County 1 (- 1), Wisconsin 7 (seven innings)
RHP Cibney Bello (4.57) started this one and was rather decent, going four innings and allowing just one run on three hits and three walks against six Ks. RHP Justin Jordan (6.92, W) also did well, going three innings with three hits, a walk, and three strikeouts to his credit. LF Brent Johnson (R, RBI, SB, .287), 2B Yung-chi Chen (2B, R, RBI, .288), RF Mike Wilson (HR, 2 R, .261), and SS Matt Tuiasosopo (2 RBI, .294) all had two hits, and C Rob Johnson (HR, 2 RBI, .278) had a home run. DH Marshall Hubbard (R, .294) had a hit and two walks in the shortened game.

Kane County 4 (- 2), Wisconsin 5
LHP Julio Santiago (5.31, W), steadily improving from a horrid start to his season, went seven innings and gave up four runs on five hits (HR) and a walk against four strikeouts. LHP Eric O’Flaherty (4.23, S) took the final couple of innings and had two each of hits, walks, and strikeouts, along with a wild pitch. CF Chris Colton (2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, CS, PO, .345) had three hits in the game and 1B Brent Johnson (2B, 2 R, .288) and RF Mike Wilson (2B, 2 RBI, SB, .261) both doubled.

Tri City 7 (COL - 2), Everett 11
LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (5.19, W) struggled through his five innings, giving up four runs on six hits (HR), two wild pitches, and four walks against six Ks, but he was fortunate enough to have the opposing starter struggle more (4 IP, 6 R, 7 H, 3 BB, 3 K, HB). LHP Rollie Gibson (3.38) went the next three innings, giving up a couple runs on three hits (2 HR!) and two walks while striking out three, and RHP Cory Koliscak (4.26) struck out two in the ninth. LF Alex Gary (2B, 3B, 2 R, .254) had three hits in the game, 3B Ron Prettyman (R, .321) and SS Robert Hudson (2B, R, RBI, PO, .284) had two apiece, and CF Trevor Heid (2B, R, 2 RBI, SB, .354) and RF Michael Saunders (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, CS, .235) had doubles, with Saunders also walking twice. DH Jeff Clement (R, .200) made his eagerly anticipated pro debut, singling in his first at-bat. With Clement signed, Chao Kuan Wu might be on the way back to the desert. Maybe he can help his countryman Chia-an Huang there.

Tri City 4, (- 3), Everett 7
LHP Paul Fagan (4.38, W) went five innings and was “effectively wild”, giving up just two hits (one earned) on five hits, four wild pitches, and two walks against two Ks, but hey, whatever gets the job done. LHP David Asher (4.15) went the next three innings and gave up a couple of hits while striking out five. The ninth went RHP Eric Carter (6.75) and RHP Cory Koliscak (4.15, S), though Carter gave up a couple of runs on two hits, three walks, and two Ks before Koliscak got the final ground out. Sure, 2B Luis Valbuena (SB, RBI, .257) had three hits, and LF Casey Craig (2 R, E, .295) had three walks. C J.B. Tucker (HR, 3 RBI, .250) even had a three-run home run, but I know you guys are all reading to find out that DH Jeff Clement (2B, 2 R, .429) went 2-for-2, walked, and was hit by a pitch.

Phoenix Athletics 0 (- 1), Peoria Mariners 5
The M’s opened up the second half of the AZL season with a win. LHP Steve Uhlmansiek (6.14) went the first, walking one and K’ing of his two outs. RHP Stephen Kahn (0.00) made his pro debut after that, going an inning and giving up a hit and a walk while striking out one. RHP Toma Bonilla (5.06) went the next three innings, allowing a hit and a walk against six strikeouts, and RHP Tyrone Lamont (4.50, W) picked up the win after walking one and striking out two in the next couple of frames. RHP Juan Colon (3.60) had a hit, two walks, and five strikeouts to his line in the final two innings. 3B Leury Bonilla (R, RBI, .253) had a couple of hits in the game, but the guy who probably had the biggest impact in the win was PH-C Kevin Gergel (2B, R, 3 RBI, .318), who had a bases-loaded double in the sixth, the only inning in which any runs crossed the plate. 2B Ronald Garth (2B, R, .324) also did well, doubling and walking twice.

Mesa Cubs 1 (- 2), Peoria Mariners 5
RHP Brian Stitt (0.00) went a couple of innings, giving up a hit and striking out two. RHP Marwin Vega (8.53, W) followed him and went three innings, allowing a run to score on two hits, two walks, and a strikeout. LHP Worth Lumry (6.00), whose ERA always seems to be right around six, gave up two hits in the next two innings, and RHP Juan Zapata (4.57) finished the game with a hit, a walk, and four strikeouts. RF Eddy Hernandez (.354) had three hits, CF Tim Auty (2B, .373) had two, and DH Curtis Ledbetter (HR 2 RBI, .319) and LF Greg Halman (HR, 2 R, .236) both had two-run home runs.

No Aguirre game again on Wednesday. J needs to learn how to read the MILB.com schedules.

Aguirre 7, Ciudad Alianza 4 (BOS-SD + 4)
RHP Ronald Uviedo (3.11) got through only four and two-thirds innings, giving up all four runs on seven hits (HR), a wild pitch, a hit batter, and a walk against five strikeouts. LHP Hugo Castro (3.77, W) went the next three and a third, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out four. RHP Diomny Gaetano (0.68, S) would pick up another save in the ninth, though he did give up a hit and a walk. SS Terry Serrano (2B, R, CS, E, .235), 2B Humberto Espinoza (2 R, .304), LF William Ortiz (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, CS, .265), and 1B Gerardo Avila (HR, 2 RBI, SB, .250) all had two hits in the effort, but Ortiz also walked three times.

  Kuo-hui Lo Signed

According to the Seattle Times and the Bremerton Sun (registration jerks), the Mariners have made their first major addition of the the int'l prospect signing season, and signed OF Kuo-hui Lo, believed to be one of the top young players in Taiwan.

Lo's biggest asset appears the be his bat, as he was hitting .363 and slugging .625 in the senior league in Taiwan as a 19-year-old. Power, however, is not something that the players coming out of that region have been known for.

Lo is the fourth signing out Taiwan, joining Wisconsin 2B Yung-chi Chen, Everett C/DH Chao Kuan Wu, and Peoria RHP Chia-an Huang. The bonus to having a baseball academy there is that we're ahead of the game on most of these things.

(more info as it becomes available. c'mon, you guys know I live for this stuff)

  Game Recaps (7/26/05)

The computer here is about eight years out of date, and I’m caught listening to lobby muzak and one of the worst cellphone conversations I’ve heard in recent memory, but I’m rolling with recaps all the same.

Iowa 3 (CHC - 7), Tacoma 5
LHP Bobby Livingston (4.20, W) had another good start, retiring every batter the first time through the lineup and going five innings overall, giving up three runs on three hits and two walks against three strikeouts. RHP Felix Hernandez (2.36) took on the next three and one-third innings, giving up a couple of hits and three free passes while striking out five, and LHP George Sherrill (2.38, S) struck out the final two batters for the save. DH Hunter Brown (2B, 2 R, .293) and RF Chris Snelling (3 RBI, .365), recently demoted in favor of Dave Hansen (grrr), had two hits apiece. LF Abraham Nunez (2B, 2 R, RBI, .262) added a double.

San Antonio 3, Corpus Christi 7 (HOU 0)
RHP Jon Huber (5.21, L) had another bad start, going five and one-third innings and giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits (HR), a wild pitch, and two walks against six Ks. LHP Tim Rall (2.45) went the next had a hit, a wild pitch, a walk, and two Ks over the next inning and two-thirds, and RHP Scott Atchison (0.00) walked one and struck out two in the eighth. DH Jaime Bubela (RBI, .302) and CF Gary Harris (3B, R, RBI, CS, .287) had a couple of hits each, 2B Ismael Castro (2B, R, RBI, E, .248) had a double, and 3B Jesus Guzman (R, SB, .269) was 1-for-3 with a couple of walks.

Lancaster 5 (ARI – 4), Inland Empire 1
RHP Brandon Moorhead (5.03, L) went five and one-third innings in the loss, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk against seven strikeouts. LHP Derrick Ellison (6.97) took the hill after that for the next two innings, walking two and striking out one. RHP Jeff Mault (9.00) gave up a couple of runs on a hit and four walks against a strikeout in the next inning and one-third, and RHP Nibaldo Acosta (4.79) got the final out. CF Sebastien Boucher (2 2B, R, .309) had two doubles and a walk, but not much else happened for the offense.

Kane County 8 (OAK + 1), Wisconsin 3
RHP Aaron Jensen (5.29) went six and two-thirds and gave up six runs on seven hits (3 HR!!), a hit batter, and three walks against four Ks. RHP Jon Lockwood (3.18) gave up one of those and two more of his own (one earned) on a hit, three wild pitches, and two walks against three strikeouts over the final two and one-third. LF Brent Johnson (R, 2 RBI, SB, CS, A, .279) had two hits and two walks, and 3B Yung-chi Chen (E, .283) had three walks, but that’s the extent of the highlights.

Eugene 1 (SD – 3), Everett 6
New rotation setup, apparently, as RHP Jeff Gilmore (1.02, W) went eight innings and was brilliant, giving up a run on six hits (HR) while striking out seven. RHP Eric Carter (6.17), relegated to ‘pen work again, gave up a walk and struck out one in the ninth. CF Trevor Heid (HR, SB, A, .355) had another three hits in this one, 1B Reed Eastley (HR 2 RBI, .343) had two, and RF Michael Saunders (2B, .229) had a double.

Aguirre 5, Tronconero #1 1 (PHI + 10)
In a duel between the top two clubs in the league, the Aguirre M’s came out on top to gain first place. RHP Alfredo Venagas (2.16, W) went six+ innings and gave up a run on five hits, a hit batter, and two walks against three Ks. RHP Jorge Acosta (3.43) took the next two and two-thirds, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out four, and LHP Jose Jimenez (4.09, S) struck out the final batter of the game. SS Terry Serrano (2 R, 2, E, .226) and LF William Ortiz (RBI ,CS, .250) both had two hits, and 3B Deybis Benitez (2B, 2 RBI, .217), RF Greysom Berroteran (2B, RBI, .262), and CF Manuel Pinto (2B, .270) each had doubles. C Jair Fernandez (R, .260) had a hit and two walks. It seems like the whole of the Aguirre offense has been struggling uncharacteristically of late.

  Jeff Clement Inked

Yesterday, Baseball America hinted that the next draftee to sign might be number three pick Jeff Clement, and today, it has come to pass, via the M's upping their bid and Clement dropping his asking price.

Clement will be reporting to the Everett Aquasox shortly, so if you want to catch a glimpse of the guy who will now inherit the ever-dangerous "catcher of the future" label. I know I'll be up there shortly.

  Game Recaps (7/25/05)

Tacoma 2, Colorado Springs 16 (COL – 8)
Not a fun game to recap. RHP Cha Seung Baek (6.39, E, L) gave up ten of the runs in just two and one-third innings on twelve hits (2 HR!), a wild pitch, and two walks against one strikeout. RHP Jeff Heaverlo (5.62) also struggled over the next three and one-third innings, giving up four runs (and one of Baek’s) on six hits and three walks, though he did strike out five. RHP Sean Green (3.95) allowed one of Heaverlo’s runs to score and two more of his own over the next inning and a third on three hits and a walk, and RHP Masao Kida (3.64) struck out one in the eighth. DH Greg Dobbs (R, .333) had three singles and RF Abraham Nunez (2B, .262), 1B Aaron Rifkin (2B, R, .252), and SS Yuniesky Betancourt (2B, RBI, .299) all had doubles, but there was no hitting beyond that.

San Antonio 7, Corpus Christi 4 (HOU – 1)
RHP Michael Bumstead (5.40, 2 E) got the start with RRS on the DL, going four and one-third innings and giving up four runs on three hits, a wild pitch, and four walks against a strikeout. RHP R.D. Spiehs (2.95, W) got the win over the next two and two-thirds, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out one. RHP Scott Atchison (0.00) got an inning in, giving up a couple of hits and striking out two, and LHP Cesar Jimenez (3.00, S) gave up a hit in the ninth, but picked up the save. LF Jaime Bubela (2 R, SB, .301) had another three hits, CF-RF T.J. Bohn (HR, 2 R, E, .311) and RF Jon Nelson (2B, 3B, 2 RBI, .226) had two, and DH Nate Espy (2B, R, 2 RBI, CS, .278) doubled and walked twice.

Lancaster 1 (ARI – 5), Inland Empire 7
LHP Ryan Feierabend (3.87, 2 PO, W) finally got his ERA back under 4.00, going six and two-thirds innings and giving up a run on five hits and a walk against a strikeout. LHP Troy Cate (1.59, S) took it the rest of the way, walking one and striking out three. 1B Bryan Lahair (2B, R, 3 RBI, .291) had four hits in the game, and the trio of CF Sebastien Boucher (2B, R, RBI, .295), SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, 3B, 2 R, .306), and RF Wladimir Balentien (2B, R, .270) had two each.

The Wisconsin game was rained out yesterday. It’s scheduled to be made up fairly soon…

Eugene 3 (SD – 2), Everett 5
LHP Justin Thomas (4.54) went five innings and gave up three runs on six hits a wild pitch, and two walks against six strikeouts. RHP Roman Martinez (0.90, W) went the next three and two-thirds innings, allowing only two hits and striking out a batter, and LHP David Asher (5.40, S) recorded the final out to get the save. 3B Ron Prettyman (2B, 3 RBI, SB, .333) was the only one with two hits, but DH Reed Eastley (2B, 2 R, .339) added a double and a walk.

Peoria Mariners 11, Peoria Padres 8 (+ 1) (ten innings)
Patchwork pitching again. RHP Rich Dorman (18.00) went two innings and gave up four runs on four hits, a wild pitch, and three walks against five strikeouts. RHP Kevin Olore (5.40) struck out two in the next inning, and then RHP Brian Stitt (0.00) allowed two hits in the fourth (so there’s your answer, Lyle). RHP Chia-an Huang (6.62) gave up three runs on four hits, a walk, and a strikeout in the next two and one-third innings, and I can only hope he’s not suffering from Chao Wang Syndrome. RHP John Sullivan (3.68) gave up two hits and struck out one over the next inning and two-thirds, and LHP Estelin Soto (5.21, W) picked up the win in the final two innings, though he did give up a couple runs on four hits, a hit batter, a walk, and three strikeouts. Lots of threes in this one, that is to say, three hits apiece from 1B Kevin Gergel (2B, HR, 3 R, .312), DH Andy Hargrove (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, SB, .354), CF Tim Auty (2B, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .362), and RF Eddy Hernandez (RBI, .318). 3B Leury Bonilla (3B, HR, 3 RBI, .239) had a couple of hits go for extra bases. The M’s are the second best hitting team in the AZL right now, but it’s the pitching that seems to be killing ‘em.

Aguirre was rained out as well yesterday. The weather seems to be hitting them more than any other team.

I’m out of action for the next two days, mini-vacation if you will, though that isn’t entirely accurate. I’m back on Thursday, and will follow up with double, if not the dreaded triple recap.

  Geam Recaps (7/24/05)

Tacoma 7, Colorado Springs 5 (COL – 10) (seven innings)
RHP Chris Buglovsky (5.24) went three and one-third innings in the opener of the doubleheader, giving up four runs on six hits, a hit batter, and a couple of walks against a couple of Ks. RHP Sean Green (3.46, W) would get the win, going the next two and two-thirds and giving up just a hit and a walk while striking out two. There have been some rumblings of him as a September call-up lately, and there are certainly worse options, but his control (22/14 K/BB in triple-A) spooks me a little. RHP Masao Kida (3.69, S) gave up a solo home run and struck out two in the ninth. RF Abraham Nunez (R, RBI, .264) had a couple hits in the game, and SS Yuniesky Betancourt (3B, 2 RBI, CS, PO .298) and C Ryan Christianson (HR, 2 RBI, .254) had extra-base hits. Betancourt also walked, which brings his grand total at the level to five, which is the same as Dobbs had in 87 more at-bats in Tacoma last year. It’s the little victories that make prospect watching worthwhile.

Tacoma 2, Colorado Springs 3 (- 9) (seven innings)
LHP Damian Moss (4.38) pitched the first five and two-thirds innings, giving up a run on five hits and two walks against three Ks. RHP Clint Nageotte (1.20) pitched two-thirds of an inning after that, but would end up giving up a run on a wild pitch and a walk against a strikeout. LHP George Sherrill (2.45, L), not quite accustomed to back-to-back games yet, gave up a run on two hits in one-third of an inning to lose the game. 2B Ramon Santiago (2B, R, .252) had a couple hits in the game, and 1B Aaron Rifkin (2B, RBI, .251) and SS Yuniesky Betancourt (3B, RBI, .299) had some extra-base hits. Continuing the props for Betancourt, that’s his sixth triple for the Rainiers.

San Antonio 4, Corpus Christi 3 (HOU + 1)
LHP Jared Thomas (5.87) went three innings this time around and gave up the same amount of runs on five hits and four walks against four Ks. LHP Chris Key (1.30), who arguably could be in Tacoma right about now, went the next four and gave up five hits, balked, and punched out two. RHP Renee Cortez (4.10, W) and RHP Emiliano Fruto (2.66, S) split the last two innings, and the win and the save, respectively. Cortez walked one and struck out one, and Fruto did the same thing, plus a strikeout. LF Jaime Bubela (2B, RBI, SB, .297) and DH Nate Espy (2B, HR, .277) had three hits, 2B Ismael Castro (RBI, .251) had two, and 3B Jesus Guzman (HR, .269) had his ninth home run along with a walk. I don’t give him much press, but Bubela’s stolen base today was his thirty-first. If he is actually figuring out how to play again, then he might have the upside of a Podsednik-type in the majors, that is to say, older, left-handed, base stealing threat, serviceable in center, not a whole lot of power, and probably forced into action by a team without better options. Of course, since he’s 27 and hasn’t sniffed triple-A yet, don’t take that one to the bank.

Inland Empire didn’t play today. Blame the force of habit and MILB.com’s tendencies to leave off days unmarked.

Clinton 9 (TEX – 4), Wisconsin 13
Solid outing by RHP Mark Lowe (4.66, W), who went six innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits (HR) against three strikeouts. The bullpen didn’t do so hot from there, though, and LHP Adam Brandt (22.50) would give up six runs on seven hits (3 HR!!) against three strikeouts in the next two innings, and RHP Jon Lockwood (2.70) nearly suffered the same fate, giving up a run on a hit and three walks against a strikeout over the next two-thirds. Fortunately, RHP Stephen Grasley (3.31) came in and struck out the final batter of the game.

Eugene 10 (SD – 1), Everett 3
I considered making the journey to see this game, but I think I made the right decision. RHP Nick Allen (4.19, L) had the worst outing of his young career, giving up six runs on eight hits (HR), a walk, and a strikeout in just an inning and two-thirds. LHP Lance Beus (3.63, E, PO), on the other hand, fared rather well in the next four and a third and gave up only one run on a hit, a hit batter, three walks, and four Ks. RHP Joe Woerman (6.30) finished off the final three innings having allowed three runs to score on four hits, a wild pitch, and four walks against four Ks. LF Casey Craig (HR, 2 R, SB, .312), C J.B. Tucker (HR, .260), and CF David Hall (.314) had two hits apiece.

Surprise Rangers 5 (- 3), Peoria Mariners 3
LHP Harold Williams (2.91, L) got another tough loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits, two walks, and three strikeouts over the course of five innings. RHP Ari Kafka (6.00) went the next two, giving up a hit and three walks and striking out two, but RHP Toma Bonilla (5.89) had an unearned run score on a hit and a walk in the next inning and a third. RHP Juan Zapata (5.03) collected the final two outs for the M’s pitchers. 2B Juan Guzman (2 2B, RBI, E, .280) had a pair of doubles, and DH Curtis Ledbetter (HR, .328) and 3B Jeff Dominguez (2B, E, .281) had extra-base knocks.
