  John Sickels chats w/ BP

While I am one of those heathens that has yet to get a subscription to Baseball Prospectus, I feel it is worth noting that they will be having a chat with noted minor league guru John Sickels Monday at 11 AM PDT, 2 PM EDT. You are free to submit questions early, so take the liberty if you wish to get one or two in.

  News Around the Minors, 11/13/04

Taking a note from the MLB.com site, the Tacoma News Tribune is running a story on former first-round pick Ryan Anderson. This rendition is a bit less optimistic, naturally, and focuses more on the process that went through as Benny Looper and Co. decided to take yet another chance on the tall lefty.

On another former Rainier note, I feel that I should probably clarify something that came up in an e-mail from Logan at Mariners Revolution. Jose Lopez IS playing with the Lara Cardenales in Venezuela, but if you look up his stats or the roster, it will list him by his middle name as Celestino Lopez. Sorry for the confusion.

Meanwhile, MLB.com is taking their cue from BA and ITP and running a story on shortstop Michael Morse. Not much to add, aside from the fact that if he made the big leagues, he would be one of only a few Jamaican players to do so. Also, if Mike Goff is working wonders with Morse's ability to play short (and Dobbs' ability to play third), why haven't they tried the same with Jose Lopez? Perhaps there's less to work with in that regard...

Over in Wisconsin, the local press has been informed that the contract of manager Steve Roadcap will not be renewed for the 2005 season. This comes no doubt as a result of the 57-82 record the T-Rats put up this year, though the Mariners have recently found difficulty in getting a winning season out of any Wisconsin team. Roadie was one of the managers I liked within the system, but it's not a huge stuff; what he can do well, Brundage can do better.

Speaking of Brundage, it appears that he's out of the running for Mariners first base coach, or at least isn't being mentioned anymore. With Jeff Newman as the likely candidate to take over third, Goff and Dan Rohn are the better candidates to take over first and the infield coaching duties. While Goff is highly qualified, it might be better if he could continue his current job. They aren't guarenteed to stay at shortstop, Tuiasosopo and Jones might be able to benefit from his instruction, and the same could apply to others. Goff in the minors on the same principle Chavez is.

Over at InsideThePark, my review of the corner infield prospects is now up. This has been a collective effort on all of our parts, so where Jason Churchill took the starting pitchers, Joe Kaiser got the outfielders, Ian Levin got the catchers, and Troy Sowden will take on the middle infielders coming on Monday. Good reads all; we're still providing content on the M's prospects even with the slow news elsewhere.

RHP Tony Runion, 2.35 ERA, 12.2 IP, 21 hits, 15 strikeouts

Ugly

C Luis Oliveros, 10 games, 32 at-bats, 2 home runs, 7 RBIs, .188/.212/.394

A number of movements this time... Evert and Gonzo are on their way up, Oliveros and Runion are down, Lopez, Leone, and Thornton debut. Guaramato gets defaulted up the list because he's been faring better and his experience is a lot less than those of the guys he's been trying to get out. Other players haven't made enough of a mark yet to get on the list, so we're waiting for the Domincan League to really get rolling right now.

  Morse and the AFL

Baseball America has been putting together a continuing series on Arizona Fall League players that are of some interest in the prospect world. Most recently, Michael Morse came up in an article and talked about his goals for the season. As I've mentioned before here and in the ITP recaps, Morse is in Arizona primarily to work on his defense, but this article adds that he has actually spoken with A-Rod on the prospects of staying at the position. It seems as if A-Rod isn't the only one who has some faith in Morse. In addition, he's been working out with guys like Dmitri Young, Juan Pierre, and Charles Johnson during the offseason in his Florida home. Overall, it sheds a good amount of light on a prospect who is still relatively unknown even now, months after being traded to the M's.

On a completely unrelated note, there was an article on Bucky Jacobsen in the Everett Herald recently and towards the end of it, they mention that the Mariners have signed Matt Stark as a regional scout for Mexico. Oddly enough, Stark was the hitting coach for the Albuquerque Isotopes last season under Ron Hassey, who was recently named the Mariners bench coach. I don't know enough about Stark to speak about his abilities as a scout, but I do know that the M's scouting in Mexico has been sorely lacking for a number of years now, so anything seems better than what they've had.
