Mariner Minors
Two More Indy Leaguers Signed
The Mariners have signed two more Frontier League pitchers in
LHP Donny Langdon and RHP Justin Jordan. Like Ellison before them, both are expected to report to Wisconsin, which leaves me wondering who might be sent packing.
Langdon pitched with the Evansville Otters last season as well, though it was only for seven innings and he was pretty awful in that span. This year he cleaned it up a bit, but only pitched thirteen innings. In those thirteen innings, he only allowed two hits (.048 opp BA) and struck out eighteen, but he also walked six. Prior to that, he was with Kutztown University and in his senior year he led the team in innings pitched with 67 and had a 3.59 ERA. He also had 34 walks to 72 strikeouts, so it seems as if the walk has been an ongoing issue for him. But he IS left-handed, and the M's do so love picking up spare left-handed pitching, and he's only 23...
Jordan was only signed by Evansville two days before he was picked up by the M's, which seems to imply that they had been watching for him as a NDFA since the draft. He pitched in college for Belmont University, a liberal arts college in Nashville (not exactly top-tier competition), and had a 5.81 ERA in 83 innings during his senior year. Those numbers aren't particularly awe-inspiring, but the previous year he led the team in a variety of categories, pitching 92 innings, posting a K/BB of 45/12, and throwing six complete games, four of them in a row. He had a 3.59 ERA for the season. After that, he pitched for the Thunder Bay Border Cats in the Northwoods League and led that team in wins (6-4 record), innings pitched (84.2), and K/BB (60/15) there as well. Yes, that is 167.2 innings pitched over the course of that year, so that may have been why his numbers this season got a little ugly.
The Stock Front Office Quote Machine for the Otters informs us that he is "a big pitcher" (6'5), has "a great arm", and has "competed and proven himself at a high level".

Game Recaps (6/24/05)
Tucson 4 (ARI), Tacoma 3 (twelve innings)RHP Jeff Harris (2.30) started this one and did much better this time around, going five innings and allowing just a run on three hits while he struck out seven. RHP Michael Bumstead (5.14) followed with three innings and allowed a run on four hits, a hit batter, and a walk, and then RHP Masao Kida (4.10) gave up another run on a solo shot against two Ks in his two innings. RHP Sean Green (3.46, L) would take the loss after giving up a run on four hits with three strikeouts in two innings of work. LF Shin-soo Choo (HR, .275) and RF Abraham Nunez (HR, .277) had solo home runs on opposite ends of the game. C Wiki Gonzalez (.333) had two hits, and 3B Justin Leone (R, .253) walked three times.
San Antonio 9, Springfield 5 (STL)LHP Bobby Livingston (2.80) was not so hot in this outing, giving up four runs in six innings on nine hits (HR) and two walks against four punchouts. After that, RHP Renee Cortez (4.83) had a hit and two strikeouts in the seventh, LHP Cesar Jimenez (3.24) gave up two hits in the eighth, and RHP Emiliano Fruto (3.14) allowed a run on two hits, a walk, and a strikeout in the ninth. This was another game where every starter had a hit. LF Jaime Bubela (2 R, SB, .282) and DH Nate Espy (2B, HR, 3 RBI, CS, .278) had three each, and 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, 2 R, RBI, .274), RF T.J. Bohn (2B, R, 2 RBI, SB, .290), 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (HR, 2 RBI, .246), CF Gary Harris (CS, .272), and C Brian Moon (2B, R, RBI, .268) each had two.
Lake Elsinore 9 (SD), Inland Empire 10 (ten innings)RHP Mumba Rivera (7.96) had another rough start, going five innings and giving up a run for each on five hits (2 HR!), a wild pitch, a hit batter, four walks with one strikeout, but it might have been enough for the win, had RHP Phil Wilson (6.23) not given up four runs in just two-thirds of an inning on three hits, a balk, a hit batter, and a walk. RHP Aaron Trolia (4.26) dug the Sixers ‘pen out as he walked three and struck out two over the next two and a third innings, but LHP Troy Cate (0.00) took it to extra innings and won it after two frames in which he walked two. RF B.J. Garbe (2B, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, .268) and CF Chris Colton (2 HR, 6 RBI, .247) were standouts with three and two hits, respectively. LF Carlos Arroyo (.384) also had a couple of hits, but that’s less of a surprise and more of a reminder that he isn’t really being challenged at the moment.
Quad Cities 2 (STL), Wisconsin 1This was a serious pitchers duel. RHP Aaron Jensen (4.41) had one of his good starts and gave up just one unearned run on a hit, a wild pitch, and three walks against two strikeouts. RHP Cibney Bello (4.31, L) took the loss after another unearned run on a hit and a walk in the eighth, and RHP Craig James (0.66), who doesn’t seem to get the respect he deserves, had two strikeouts in the ninth. I’m not usually one to gripe, but seriously, Bello over James on the all-star team? CF Sebastien Boucher (.356) and RF Mike Wilson (2B, R, E, .261) both had a couple of hits in this game. Finally making an appearance, DH Luis Soto (RBI, .333) was 1-for-3 in his season debut. Soto is replacing Asdrubal on the roster, technically.
Boise 4 (CHC), Everett 6RHP Rafael Soriano (9.00) went one inning in his first rehab appearance, giving up a run on a hit, a hit batter, a walk, and a strikeout. I’ve heard he was mostly in the 90s and topped around 94. The guy who will usually be taking this spot in the rotation, RHP Nick Allen (3.00, PO), gave up two runs on four hits with a strikeout over the next four innings. LHP Rollie Gibson (3.86) took the next two and a third innings and gave up run on three hits against a couple of Ks, but RHP Cory Koliscak (0.00) allowed that run to score after a hit and a walk on his way to finishing that inning. RHP Edgar Guaramato (0.00, S) had a strikeout in the ninth, and for all I know, he might end up being the Aquasox closer this year. LF Casey Craig (RBI, SB, .375), who should really be playing at a higher level, had three hits for the Sox, and SS Hyung Cho (R, RBI, .364) and RF Michael Saunders (R, CS, .286) had two. C J.B. Tucker (2B, R, SB, .400) contributed a double.
Peoria Mariners 16, Surprise Rangers 3LHP Steve Uhlmansiek (40.50, E) made his pro debut, but he gave up three runs after two hits, a hit batter, and a walk in just two-thirds of an inning. Luckily, RHP Chia-an Huang (0.00, W) was there to step in for the next three and a third innings, and he just allowed a hit and two walks while striking out five, but I’ll hold off any “promote Huang” campaigns until he has a few more appearances under his belt. LHP Worth Lumry (0.00) had an excellent debut, only allowing one batter to reach (plunked) and striking out one in his two innings, and then LHP Estelin Soto (3.00, S) took the final three and allowed a run on four hits, a balk, and two walks against a strikeout. RF Jose Graterol (HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, .600) was the standout with four hits in the game, but there was a lot of offense, as 2B Juan Guzman (3 R, RBI, .333), C Nick Prosise (2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, .375), and CF Tim Auty (2B, 2 R, RBI, .600) had three hits and 1B Andy Hargrove (2 2B, R, 4 RBI, E, .500) and DH Erwin Jacobo (R, RBI, .400) notched two. Each player had a hit for the M’s.
Aguirre was apparently rained out.

Another Indy League Lefty Signed
Various people have contacted me to point out that the Mariners have signed another pitcher in
Frontier League left-hander Derrick Ellison.
So far as I can tell, this is Ellison's first contract with an affiliated team, but he's 26, mostly a reliever, and appears to be headed for the Midwest League. It's nice to be giving another guy a chance, but from what few numbers I've seen, it doesn't look to be much more than a roster filling move due to thin pitching in the mid-minors right now. Maybe he'll surprise us later on.

Game Recaps (6/23/04)
The first day of the harsh part of the season. Seven recaps a day (sometimes eight), from here out, until the beginning of August when the VSL ends. Well, and the Cal League and PCL All-Star Breaks.
Tucson 0 (ARI), Tacoma 3LHP Andrew Lorraine (4.52, W) pitched a nine-inning complete game, giving up just five hits and striking out two. 3B Greg Dobbs (2 RBI, .455) had two RBI with his only hit, but the story was Lorraine here.
San Antonio 2, Springfield 7 (STL)RHP Job Huber (5.01) gave up all seven runs (five earned) on nine hits (2 HR!) and four walks against three strikeouts. LHP Chris Key (1.47) and RHP R.D. Spiehs (6.00) each had a strikeout, but Key pitched two innings and Spiehs just pitched one. 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (HR, 2 RBI, .242) had a two-run home run that scored all the runs for the Missions. 2B Ismael Castro (2 E, .240) had two hits, and his average seems to be getting up there, albeit slowly.
Inland Empire 1, Lake Elsinore 5 (SD)LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.98, L) gave up five runs after ten hits, a hit batter, and two walks against three strikeouts in five innings of work. RHP Greg Wear (3.26) went the final three, giving up two hits and striking out four. RF B.J. Garbe (RBI, CS, .261) had two hits in the game, and SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, .320) had a double.
Quad Cities 16 (STL), Wisconsin 15RHP Randy Frye (7.20, L) gave up seven runs on seven hits (HR), a hit batter, and two walks against a strikeout in three and a third innings, but LHP Eric O’Flaherty (6.39) gave up three of those and three of his own on three his own on three hits, a wild pitch, against two walks in just a third of an inning of work. RHP Ivan Blanco (2.04) gave up two runs in two and a third innings of work after that, with two hits (HR), a hit batter, a walk, and three strikeouts in that span. RHP Stephen Grasley (4.31) had a perfect seventh inning, RHP Roman Martinez (4.97) gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits in the eighth, and LHP Kendall Bergdall (3.94) allowed a run on a hit, three walks, and a strikeout in the ninth. Every starter reached safely in this one, and all but one had a hit. In fact, Wisconsin rallied for six runs in the ninth and came up just short of tying it. CF Sebastien Boucher (3B, 3 R, 2 RBI, E, .350) had four hits out of the leadoff spot, 3B Yung-Chi Chen (2 R, 3 RBI, SB, .299) had three hitting behind him, and 1B Marshall Hubbard (2B, R, 3 RBI, .333) and LF Josh Womack (3B, 2 R, 3 RBI, .265) had two. Hubbard also had another couple of walks, and I think tonight’s performance brings him above a 1.000 OPS. In the Midwest League. So why isn’t he in Inland now?
Boise 1 (CHC), Everett 8RHP Eric Carter (0.00, W) had one hell of a season debut, going five innings, allowing two hits and three walks, and
striking out ten. LHP David Asher (0.00) also fared well, going two innings and giving up just a hit striking out three. RHP Cory Koliscak (0.00) struck out two in the eighth, and RHP Jeff Mault (9.00) gave up a run on two hits and struck out one in the ninth. CF David Hall (2 R, .429) and C J.B. Tucker (2B, 2 RBI, .500) both had two hits, and 3B Hyung Cho (2B, R, RBI, .286) had a double.
Peoria Mariners 5, Mesa Angels 7LHP Harold Williams (4.50) gave up two runs on four hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against two Ks in four innings of work. RHP Juan Zapata (3.00, L) followed with three innings of work and gave up five runs (only one earned) after five hits (HR) and two strikeouts. LHP Daniel Schwab (0.00), now on the mound after spending most of his minor league career at first base, walked two in his inning of work. CF Sam Bradford (2B, HR, 2 RBI, .333) had another two hits, as did 1B Andy Hargrove (HR, 3 RBI, 1.000) and C Kent Dixon (2B, .667) in their pro debuts. Dixon walked once as well, and Hargrove worked a free pass twice. RF Jairo Hernandez (2B, R, RBI, .333) had a double and a walk in his stateside debut. I’d watch out for him.
Aguirre 9, Venoco #1 4 (HOU)RHP Gerardo Esparza (1.95, W) went six and two-thirds innings in this one and allowed two runs on four hits, a wild pitch, and three walks against two Ks. RHP Carlos Sanchez (3.31) went next and finished the game, giving up two runs (one earned) after four hits, a walk, and a K. No multiple-hit games for the offense, but CF Edzul Robles (R, RBI, .229) was 1-for-2 with three walks and 3B Pablo Orfila (2B, 2 R, .206) was 1-for-3 with two walks. RF William Ortiz (2B R, RBI, .313) and 2B Rayon Lampe (2B, R, .236) added doubles.

Game Recaps (6/22/05)
Tucson 4 (ARI), Tacoma 12RHP Cha Seung Baek (4.02, W) pitched seven innings tonight and gave up four runs on six hits and three walks against six strikeouts. RHP Jeff Heaverlo (6.08) and LHP Adam Brandt (0.00) split the last two innings and, aside from a hit against Heaverlo, there was nothing of note. 1B Hunter Brown (HR, 2 R, 5 RBI, .268) and 2B Ramon Santiago (2B, R, 3 RBI, .228) both had three hits, and C Miguel Olivo (2B, 3B, 3 R, RBI, .264) had two. Actually, everyone in the lineup had at least one hit. CF Jamal Strong (HR, .309) and LF Shin-soo Choo (HR, .283) had home runs.
Stockton 2 (OAK), Inland Empire 6RHP Mike Steele (3.68) pitched well in the spot start, giving up six hits and striking out four in five innings of work. RHP Chad Fillinger (6.00), just promoted from Wisconsin, gave up two runs on four hits and a walk against a strikeout over the next three, and then LHP Troy Cate (0.00) had a hit and a strikeout in the ninth. Speaking of recent promotions, SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, 3B, 2 R, 3 RBI, .500) was 2-for-4 with a walk in his first game at the level. Adam Jones is listed on the San Antonio roster, so expect him to debut there shortly. 2B Michael Garciaparra (R, .293), LF Carlos Arroyo (R, 2 RBI, SB, .387), DH Waldimir Balentien (2B, SB, .280), and C Justin Rcuhti (2B, R, .196) also had two hits. The Sixers finally broke their losing streak, which I think had gone on for eleven games now.
Boise 3 (CHC), Everett 0Another game where the defense pretty much lost the game. LHP Paul Fagan (0.00, 2 PO, L) went four innings and allowed three runs, all unearned, on two hits, two hit batters, and two walks against two Ks. Fagan also had two pickoffs. RHP Edgar Guaramato (0.00) followed and had a hit, a hit batter, a walk, and two strikeouts in his two innings, and then RHP Juan Colon (0.00) had two hits, a wild pitch, and three strikeouts going the rest of the way. SS Dean Zorn (2B, 2 E, .250) had another double, but also made two errors in the game.
Peoria Padres 12 (SD), Peoria Mariners 6Season opener! Seriously, I’m probably the only person who’s stoked about these kinds of things. RHP Clint Nageotte (0.00) finally made an appearance, going three innings and striking out six. RHP Toma Bonilla (22.50) got hammered next in his pro debut, giving up five runs on five hits, a hit batter, and three walks in two innings of work. RHP Tyrone Lamont (9.00) would get tagged with the loss, however, after giving up two runs on two hits (HR) and a walk against two Ks. RHP John Sullivan (22.50) was bit by the same thing as Bannister, and also gave up five runs on six hits and a hit batter in his inning, and then LHP Jose Suriel (0.00) took the ninth and struck out a batter. Sullivan was actually used as a catcher and third baseman in college, so the switch to the mound seems fairly recent. RF Eddy Hernandez (2 HR, 3 RBI, .750) jumped out and went 3-for-4 with a couple of jacks on his first game in the states, and 2B Ronald Garth (2 2B, R, SB, .600) also had three hits in his debut. DH Oswaldo “Jose” Graterol (2B, R, RBI, SB, .500), who I’ll probably continue referring to as such until I get confirmation one way or the other, had two hits. CF Sam Bradford Jr. (3B, R, RBI, .200) had a triple in his first game this season. Bradford broke his arm running into a wall last year and missed most of the season.
Cagua 4 (CIN), Aguirre 3LHP Jose Escalona (0.93) had one of the best VSL pitching performances I’ve ever seen, going five innings and allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out eight. RHP Jorge Acosta (4.22) went the next three, giving up two runs on four hits against four punchouts, and RHP Diomny Gaetano (0.00) went the next inning, giving up an unearned run on a hit and two walks. LHP Jose Jimenez (4.05, E, L) would take the loss as he gave up an unearned run after recording an out and a walk, but RHP Kelvin Alarcon (2.04) gave up hat run after another hit on his way to finishing the game. SS Deybis Benitez (2B, .143) had a double, but that was about it for the offense.

Game Recaps (6/21/05)
Edit: Now with the Aguirre recap!Tuscon 4 (ARI), Tacoma 10RHP Chris Buglovsky (4.70, W) won tonight, going six innings and giving up just four hits and two walks against two Ks. The win came in spite of LHP Jared Thomas (4.46) giving up four runs on six hits (2 HR) and a walk against two Ks. RHP Sean Green (3.27) got strikeouts on three of his four outs. DH Miguel Olivo (2 2B, R, 2 RBI, SB, .254) led the team with three hits, but everyone was contributing tonight. CF Jamal Strong (R, .312), C Wiki Gonzalez (2B, R, 2 RBI, .329), RF Chris Snelling (2B, 2 RBI, .365), 1B Greg Dobbs (R, SB, .444), and SS Yuniesky Betancourt (2B, HR, CS, 3 RBI, .301) added two hits.
Stockton 12 (OAK), Inland Empire 3 RHP Nibaldo Acosta (5.72, L) went only three and a third innings and allowed nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits (HR) and a two walks with no strikeouts. With a few exceptions, the Sixers pitching staff is in a rather sorry state. LHP Miguel Martinez (7.09) pitched the next two and two-thirds and gave up two runs on two hits (HR), four walks, and two strikeouts. RHP Aaron Trolia (4.43) gave up a run on a hit, a hit batter, two walks, and two Ks over the next two innings, and then LHP Troy Cate (0.00) had a hit and two strikeouts. 3B Matt Rogelstad (R, .316) and LF B.J. Garbe (R, .261) both had two hits, and CF Michael Nesbit (2B, E, .284) had a double. Oh yeah, DH Wladimir Balentien (.276) walked twice and struck out once, and that’s noteworthy enough.
Boise 7 (CHC), Everett 2RHP Marwin Vega (2.25, L) pitched better than it looks, going four innings and giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out four. RHP Nick Allen (0.00), not so much, as he gave up two runs, neither earned, on two hits and two Ks in then ext two innings. RHP Oliver Arias (9.00) also gave up two runs in his two innings on three hits and a hit batter, against a lone strikeout, and then LHP Justin Thomas (0.00) walked one in the ninth. Basically, the pitching was destroyed in large part due to five errors. 3B Corby Heckman (R, E, .400) and RF Michael Saunders (2B, RBI, .500) had two hits in this one, while SS Dean Zorn (2B, .200) and DH Bryan Sabatella (HR, .250) had extra-base knocks.
Now, for notes:
· If Vega is just eighteen, he’s good. 87-91 mph fastball with movement, which he frequently located outside only to pound them in on the hands later, an 80 mph slurvey thing, and a change-up that goes from about 65 to 75 mph. There was one 67 mph change-up that a batter absolutely flailed on.
· Allen throws junk. No other way to put it really. Arias’ repertoire is close to Vega’s in style, but not stuff.
· Thomas has wacky movement in a way where you might question whether or not he knows where it’s going. A few times while warming up he threw over the catcher’s head.
· Zorn appeared to be hit in the pocket by a pitch in the ninth inning, but neither he nor the umpire reacted, so the next pitch, he laced a double over the left fielder’s head. Gotta love it. But his arm pretty much has second base written all over it.
· Saunders, Flaig, and Valbuena were the only ones seeming to consistently hit the ball with any authority. I leave out Sabatella, because he struck out the other three times, but the bomb he did hit was just right of dead center.
Aguirre 9, Venoco #2 7 (BAL)P Karlin Taylor (3.78) went three innings and gave up three runs on four hits and three walks against two Ks. RHP Ronald Uviedo (1.35, W) took the next five innings (why not just start him?) and gave up a run on five hits and two free passes against two Ks. RHP Carlos Figueroa (inf) walked the only three batters he’s faced this year, and then RHP Diomny Gaetano (0.00) gave up a bases-clearing double, but that was as close as the Orioles got and Gaetano struck out another on the way. LF Rayon Lampe (2B, R, 4 RBI, .232) led the team with three hits, and DH William Ortiz (R, RBI, .304) and 3B Pablo Orfila (R, RBI, .186) both had two. RF Greysom Berroteran (2B, 3 R, RBI, .289) added a double to the mix.

Texas and Midwest All-Star Games
The official Minor League Baseball site is giving me the impression that they're going to have live video, audio, and gameday for both the
Texas League All-Star Game and the
Midwest League All-Star Game. Coverage for both starts at 8:00 pm, or 5:00 pm for those of us on the left coast.
I'd watch it, but by that time, I'll already be on the road to Everett, so I'll have to settle for commenting on the highlights later. Feel free to use the comments on this thread for any game observations.

Rohrbaugh signed
Seventh round pick LHP Robert Rohrbaugh
agreed to a minor league contract yesterday, as pointed out by an alert commenter in post below.
Rohrbaugh will get $145,000, plus tuition for his final three semesters at Clemson. He'll join the Everett Aquasox on Thursday.

Game Recaps (6/20/05)
Tacoma 1, Las Vegas 11 (LA)LHP Damian Moss (3.97, L) got kicked around in this one, giving up seven runs on seven hits (2 HR!) and four walks against five strikeouts in just four and two-thirds innings. RHP Michael Bumstead (5.34) finished the next inning and third without incident, but RHP Joe Woerman (18.00), who would ordinarily be in Everett about this time, gave up four runs on two hits (HR), a wild pitch, and six walks against two Ks. The scoring for the Rainiers came in the ninth, and amounted to a single by 3B Justin Leone (2B, R, SB, .259), followed by a wild pitch and then another single by 1B Greg Dobbs (.400), and finally a sacrifice fly from 2B Ramon Santiago (RBI, .221). RF Chris Snelling (.364) also had two hits, and DH Ryan Christianson (2B, .276) doubled and walked.
Stockton 16 (OAK), Inland Empire 11I’m not usually one to cite Rizzs-isms, ever, but this is one instance where you could say with some confidence that the Sixers didn’t quit. The pain of it is that, were it not for the errors, they would’ve won this game. LHP Ryan Feierabend (5.02, L) went just three innings and gave up nine runs (four earned!) on eleven hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk against three strikeouts. RHP Phil Wilson (2.25) pitched the next three innings and gave up three hits and a walk against four strikeouts, but then RHP Tanner Watson (27.00) ran into some trouble, giving up five runs on two hits, two wild pitches, a hit batter, and three walks. RHP Greg Wear (4.71, E) scored three of those and two unearned of his own on a hit, a walk, a wild pitch, and a strikeout, while he went the rest of the way. 3B Matt Rogelstad (2 R, 2 RBI, E, .313) and 1B Bryan Lahair (RBI, .284) also had three hits, but I’ll say that DH Wladimir Balentien (HR, 3 RBI, .278) was the standout from that crowd for smacking his fourteenth home run. 2B Michael Garciaparra (4 R, RBI, E, .284), SS Adam Jones (3 RBI, .296), and CF Michael Nesbit (3B, 2 R, .283) added two hits, and Garciaparra walked twice.
The Everett Aquasox open their season tomorrow. The roster should still be in flux for a little while, but there are a few interesting guys you might want to take a look at while you still can. I’m hoping to catch a glimpse of IF Dean Zorn, who might be one of the most capable switch-hitters in the organization. It looks like, from the exhibition game, that RHP Edgar Guaramato is in the bullpen for the time being, but he could still make the rotation as the season goes on. It also appears that RHP Chia-an Huang is in Peoria, as well as RHP Tyrone Lamont. Cue some angry fist shaking on my part, but that’s just the way it goes sometimes, and if there are any promotions internally from this years Aquasox squad, I’m sure they’ll both get a look. I’ll see you guys at Everett Memorial tomorrow, and probably a few more days this week as I try to scope out the team.
San Joaquin 2 (PIT), Aguirre 8P Kervin Montbrum (1.23, W) went the minimum and gave up just two hits, a wild pitch, and a walk while striking out five. LHP Hugo Castro (3.38) followed up with three innings where he allowed two runs after four hits, two wild pitches, a walk, and two strikeouts, and then RHP Diomny Gaetano (0.00) finished it off with two hits and two Ks in the ninth. On offense, CF Edzul Robles (R, 2 RBI, SB, .224) and 1B William Ortiz (R, 2 SB, .286) both had two hits, and 2B Rayon Lampe (2B, 2 RBI, .205) and 3B Pablo Orfila (3B, 2 R, RBI, .167) contributed some extra-base knocks.

Game Recaps (6/19/05)
Tacoma 8, Las Vegas 6 (LA)RHP Jeff Harris (2.42) went four innings in the spot start and gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits (HR) and four walks against five Ks. RHP Jeff Heaverlo (6.23, W) got through the next two unscathed, despite a hit and three walks, and then RHP Sean Green (3.72) gave up two runs on two hits, a walk, and a K before RHP Masao Kida (4.09, S) finished it off with a strikeout. DH Wiki Gonzalez (2B, R, RBI, .313) had four hits in this one, RF Abraham Nunez (HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, .288) and C Miguel Olivo (2 RBI, .241) had three, and CF Jamal Strong (2 R, 2 SB, .311) had two.
Midland 5 (OAK), San Antonio 9LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (4.56, W0 went six innings and gave up three runs on four hits (HR), wild pitch, and three walks with five strikeouts. LHP Chris Key (1.65, S) took it the next three innings and gave up two runs on three hits (HR), a walk, and a strikeout. There were no extra-base hits in this one, but everyone except Bohn had a hit tonight. LF Jaime Bubela (R, RBI, 2 SB, CS, PO .276) had three of them, and 2B Ismael Castro (R, 3 RBI, .229) had two.
Lake Elsinore 10 (SD), Inland Empire 9 (eleven innings)RHP Mumba Rivera (8.57, E) went six and two-thirds innings in this one and gave up five runs on ten hits (3 HR!!), two wild pitches, and a walk against five Ks. RHP Tanner Watson (23.14) struck out the final batter in that inning, but there was a walk and a hit batter to open up the eighth, both of which scored while RHP Aaron Trolia (4.42) finished the inning, hitting another batter along the way. Trolia, in turn, would walk two to open the ninth, and both would score when RHP Mike Steele (4.15) came in. Steele gave up three hits and an intentional walk in his two innings of work. RHP Greg Wear (5.00, L) got the loss after a hit, a walk, and a strikeout in the eleventh. Seven of the nine batters in the lineup, 2B Michael Garciaparra (R, .284), 3B Matt Rogelstad (2 RBI, .309), SS Erick Monzon (3 R, .288), 1B Bryan Lahair (HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, .278), DH Carlos Arroyo (SB, .397), RF B.J. Garbe (2 RBI, .257), and LF Michael Nesbit (2 R, .278), had two hits apiece. There were also four walks from that crowd, and everyone reached base safely at least once. Which will be longer, the Rainiers recent win streak, or the Sixers losing streak, now up to nine games? Stay tuned.
Wisconsin 13, Beloit 8 (MIN)LHP Casey Abrams (5.68) went five innings and allowed five runs on eight hits (2 HR), a wild pitch, and five walks against two Ks. I’d make a comment, but it would fall on deaf ears, or someone would point out to me that during the last two innings there was only one hit and three walks and that constitutes some kind of progress, or something. RHP Cibney Bello (4.42, W) got hammered in the next inning, giving up three runs on a hit, a wild pitch, a hit batter, a walk, and strikeout. The last three innings were split between LHP Eric O’Flaherty (5.58), RHP Ivan Blanco (1.17), and RHP Craig James (0.68). O’Flaherty struck out one, and James did the same but also gave up a hit. Tearing it up for yet another game was 1B Marshall Hubbard (2B, 2 HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, .329), who went 5-for-5. Between him and Lahair, well, mostly him, first base in this system is starting to get a lot more interesting. 2B Yung-Chi Chen (2B, 2 R, 4 RBI, .292), SS Oswaldo Navarro (2B, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, .283), and RF Brent Johnson (R, 2 RBI, .227) had three each.
There’s a
preliminary Aquasox roster up now, but it’ll be subject to some changes between now and Tuesday, I can assure you. Oh, and Guaramato isn’t really being tried as an OF, he was just listed like that in the media guide for some odd reason. Don’t go freakin’ out on me now.
There’s also a new article up at ITP that I wrote that gives
a little more info on the recent draft signings. It’s subscriber content, though, so…

Game Recaps (6/18/05)
So. The Mariners beat Pedro Martinez for the first time, EVER, and not only was I at work for the entire time, I forgot to turn on the game. Ack.
Tacoma 3, Las Vegas 6 (LA)Well, Tacoma’s a half game out of first again. LHP Andrew Lorraine (5.11, L) brought the ten-game winning streak to an end, going six innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits (HR) and four walks against just three Ks. RHP Michael Bumstead (5.58) gave up two runs on three hits and a walk over the next two frames. CF Jamal Strong (2B, .307) and SS Yuniesky Betnacourt (CS, .323) had two hits, and YuBet walked for the first time in triple-A. RF Abraham Nunez (HR, 2 RBI, .280) had another home run, C Ryan Christianson (2B, R, .279) had another double, and LF Shin-soo Choo (R, .288) walked three times. He has forty-one walks against forty-seven strikeouts now.
Midland 1 (OAK), San Antonio 2 (seventeen innings)Seventeen innings, I mean really. I hope Rowland-Smith can take the Missions deep tomorrow. LHP Thom Oldham (3.71) pitched well, going five innings and giving up seven hits and three walks against eight strikeouts. RHP Renee Cortez (4.99) went two innings after that, with two hits, a wild pitch, and two strikeouts, but LHP Cesar Jimenez (3.32) blew the save op over the next three, giving up a run on four hits (HR) with three strikeouts. RHP Emiliano Fruto (3.02) was perfect through the next two, but far more impressive was the incredible performance by LHP Tim Rall (2.52, W), who was
perfect through five innings and struck out seven. Games that go on this long have weird offensive numbers by nature, but I have to give the game ball to 3B Jesus Guzman (HR, .270), who, in addition to having three other hits, hit a walk off home run in the seventeenth inning. I, and the Missions bullpen, salute you, good sir.
Lake Elsinore 2 (SD), Inland Empire 0LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.70, E, L) went seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits and three walks against five strikeouts. RHP Phil Wilson (3.60) finished it off, giving up a walk and punching out two in the final two innings. LF Carlos Arroyo (CS, .397) had another three-hit game, 2B Michael Garciaparra (CS, PO, .282) had two, and SS Adam Jones (2B, .293) and CF Chris Colton (2B, CS, .240) both doubled.
Wisconsin 1, Beloit 2 (MIN)RHP Jason Snyder (3.53, L) went seven innings and gave up both runs on two solo shots, but only allowed two other hits, two hit batters, and two walks while striking out seven. RHP Chad Fillinger (2.70) gave up three hits in the eighth, but didn’t allow a run and punched out one. CF Sebastien Boucher (2B, RBI, .338) had two hits in yet another game, and 2B Asdrubal Cabrera (3B, .318) was 1-for-2 with two walks. The Rattlers may have lost two in a row, but so has Clinton, and thus, the T-Rats are division champs for the first half.
Aguirre 3, Tronconero #2 4I’m having trouble with the VSL site right now, so I can’t provide any stats to go along with this. RHP Alfredo Venagas went four and a third innings and gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk against five strikeouts. RHP Kelvin Alarcon went the next two and two thirds and allowed a run on four hits with two Ks. LHP Jose Escalona (L) got tagged with the loss, but his run was unearned after he pitched an inning+ and had a hit, two walks, and two strikeouts in that span. RHP Diomny Gaetano gave up the walk-off hit. For offense, I guess I have to go with CF Edzul Robles (R), DH William Ortiz (RBI), and LF Rayon Lampe (R) all going 1-for-3 with a walk.
Today’s Schedule:
Tacoma: RHP Jeff Harris, at Las Vegas, @ 12:05 pm PT
San Antonio: LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith, at San Antonio, @ 4:05 pm PT
Inland Empire: RHP Brandon Moorhead, at Inland Empire, @ 2:11 pm PT
Wisconsin: LHP Casey Abrams, at Beloit, @ 12:00 pm PT
Aguirre: Off day
