  Rule 5 Preview

Baseball America has posted a free Rule 5 preview which covers the big names available. No Mariners show up on the list, so it seems we're fairly safe there, but the M's may still decide to go out and pick up someone out of that mix. After all, Francisco Cruceta seemed to have slipped off the 40-man, and more moves may be pending.

  Minor League Coaching Staffs Announced

Last night, I was talking with Jason (of InsideThePark) asking him when he thought the staffs would be released. He said any day now, and sure enough, the M's announced their field staffs today, the same date they did last year.

Bundage and crew + veteran hitting coach Terry Pollreisz will be taking on Tacoma, Darin Brown will be taking some of his staff and former T-Rats pitching coach Brad Holman to San Antonio, Gary Thurman is back in the saddle to manage Inland Empire, Steinmann returns to Wisconsin, as I predicted soon after Grifol's promotion (Mindtaker!), Jim Horner is the new Aquasox manager, and Dana Williams is back in the desert again. There still aren't any pitching coaches for Wisconsin or Everett, but they should get those named pretty soon.

  More from the Dominican...

And more from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Perhaps it's a series. This one focuses on the pros and cons that teams have operating a facility in the Dominican Republic compared to Venezuela. The article hints that the M's may be looking into dropping the VSL and expanding their DSL facility if things continue to go south (keep in mind, the facility was robbed earlier this year), but that's not a decision they're making just yet. Meanwhile, the Cardinals are looking to expand their operations into Venezuela, which would be nice as it would give the league an even number of teams again.

A few other notes... if you haven't checked out the Run Values post Dave did over at USSM, you should. That's part of why you'll hear me get excited over a strikeout pitcher inducing groundballs. Also, I've added some things to the side bar, one being the return of complete organizational stats (thanks, BA!) and the other being mention of my YIM account, which I actually use from time to time. Finally, I tracked down a source for accurate, up-to-date Puerto Rican Winter League stats. Very little is happening down there that concerns the M's, but look for that in this Sunday's update.

Diamond Futures' Top 10 M's Prospects

Michael over at Diamond Futures just released his top 10 Mariners' prospects list, which goes something like this...
1. Felix Hernandez RHSP
2. Adam Jones, "SS"
3. Cesar Jimenez, LHRP
4. Chris Snelling, OF
5. Bobby Livingston, LHSP
6. Wladimir Balentien, OF
7. Ryan Feierabend, LHSP
8. Chris Colton, OF
9. Shin-soo Choo, OF
10. Matt Tuiasosopo, "SS"
Michael has his own formula for doing things, which doesn't count players until they reach full-season ball and weights the scores pretty heavily on age. Since this is a strictly statistical effort, you're seeing someone like Colton on here, who you might not see on any other list, but aside from that, all the prospects on the list are at least decent (and all but Colton and Felix, who has exhausted his rookie status, will eventually appear on one of the top fives per level G and I have been doing). I try to balance the opinions out by turning to Diamond Futures and On Deck Baseball as the number crunchers.

RHP Rich Dorman: 2-2, 3.44 ERA in 34.0 IP, 16 runs (13 ER), 39 hits (HR), 48/25 K/BB
LHP Jose Escalona: 0-0, 3.86 ERA in 2.1 IP, 4 hits, 1 run (1 ER), 0/1 K/BB
RHP Emiliano Fruto: 2-1, 1.53 ERA in 17.2 IP, 8 saves, 4 runs (3 ER), 14 hits (HR), 19/6 K/BB
IF Jesus Guzman: .284/.345/.446 in 74 at-bats, 3 2B, 3 HR, 12 runs, 14 RBI, 7/17 BB/K
RHP Jeff Heaverlo: 0-3, 6.23 ERA in 17.1 IP, 17 runs (12 ER), 20 hits (4 HR), 14/10 K/BB
LHP Cesar Jimenez: 1-2, 2.63 ERA in 37.2 IP, 13 runs (11 ER), 35 hits, 28/14 K/BB
LHP Chris Key: 0-0, 6.48 ERA in 8.1 IP, 7 runs (6 ER), 12 hits (2 HR), 5/3 K/BB
IF Jose Lopez: .275/.366/.363 in 80 at-bats, 4 2B, HR, 6 runs, 10 RBI, 10/12 BB/K
IF Oswaldo Navarro: .310/.310/.448 in 29 at-bats, 4 2B, 7 runs, 1 RBI, 0/3 BB/K
C Luis Oliveros: .200/.200/.200 in 5 at-bats, 0/1 BB/K
LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith: 0-0, 4.05 ERA in 6.2 IP, 3 runs (3 ER), 7 hits, 2/3 K/BB
C Yorvit Torrealba: .286/.364/.286 in 28 at-bats, 3 runs, RBI, 3/6 BB/K

Not an eventful week for the pitching. Most of the performances were relatively stable. Fruto and Bazardo racked up some more Ks in limited time, but Jimenez gave up three runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings in his first bad start down there. Cortez and Escalona also saw their ERAs climb a bit after the bullpen fell apart behind them. Still no sightings of Ryan Rowland-Smith. The hitting was more of the same. Bohn's OBP and AVG are the same this week as they were last, but his slugging dropped since it's been mostly singles and walks. Jose Lopez finally saw his slugging jump up to... well, more reasonable levels. A home run and a double will do that to a line. Oliveros picked up his first hit too, so that's good. No Drubie or Ozzie this week.

Dominican Winter League:
RHP Julio Mateo: 0-0, 4.90 ERA in 3.2 IP, 1 save, 2 run (2 ER), 4 hits, 2/0 K/BB
RHP Rafael Soriano: 1-0, 6.23 ERA in 13.0 IP, 13 runs (9 ER), 25 hits, 8/5 K/BB

Poor performances for both guys, but Soriano only had two innings and Mateo had one. At least their use is being limited somewhat, unlike previous seasons. Miguel Olivo is playing with them on the Escogido team this year, which is odd, he's usually been with the Aguilas. In related news concerning M's busts... I think Mac Suzuki might be pitching for them too, but that's assuming that the "Macada" for his listed name is a transcription error. It may not be him.

The Puerto Rican Winter League is still without current stats for all teams, which is a shame. On the Mayaguez team they have RHPs Sean Green and Mumba Rivera and OF Jamal Strong, in addition to RHP Juan Done and IF Erick Monzon, who played there last season.

Hey, M's! Still waiting on the minor league coaching staffs to be named, along with the team MVPs! Edit: I just realized that they didn't finalize their coaching staffs until around Dec 1st last year. Oops.
