  M's Sign Indy League Catcher

This has been floating around all day, and since the news is slow anyway, I might as well announce that the M's won signing rights to C Tony Sanguinetti of the Frontier League.

Sanguinetti, who turned 24 this October, hit .274/.356/.559 in 299 at-bats with the Richmond Roosters this year, which included 22 home runs. This was a major step up from his previous season with Richmond, which had him hitting .228/.324/.364 in 162 at-bats with only four home runs. His contract had been sold to the newly-formed Traverse City Beach Bums after Richmond disbanded, but they apparently decided to put him up for bid rather than keeping him. He was four shy of tying the league's home run lead, putting him around fifth place overall.

Nifty signing, even on an organizational level. I'd expect him to be at Inland or higher, maybe DHing when he isn't catching (Johnson and Clement would have priority, I assume).

  Winter Leagues Stats Wrap (1/15/06)

It's been over two weeks and I'm still getting used to throwing the 06 up there... well, here's some discussion fodder while we're waiting for the next Hawks game. I'm not ordinarily a big football fan, but it's nice to see a Seattle team making noise in the playoffs.

Venezuelan Winter League (Semi-finals):
RHP Yorman Bazardo: 0-0, 2.45 ERA in 7.1 IP, 2 runs (2 ER), 5 hits, 6/0 K/BB
SS Asdrubal Cabrera: .071/.222/.214 in 14 at-bats, 2 runs, 2 RBI, 3B, 2/2 BB/K
RHP Renee Cortez: 0-0, 7.94 ERA in 5.2 IP, 5 runs (5 ER), 8 hits (2 HR), 3/1 K/BB
LHP Jose Escalona: 0-0, 0.00 ERA in 0.0 IP, 1 hit, 0/0 K/BB
RHP Emiliano Fruto: 0-1, 1.93 ERA in 4.2 IP, 2 saves, 2 runs (1 ER), 5 hits, 6/4 K/BB
3B Jesus Guzman: .000/.000/.000 in 5 at-bats, run, RBI, 0/3 BB/K

Not a lot going on for the hitters here, as most of the bigger names have packed it up for the season, but the pitchers are still active and contributing to the playoff hopes of their various teams. Cortez has made a few more bad pitches, but Bazardo seems to be tearing it up and Fruto's done well overall.

Dominican Winter League (Semi-finals):
RHP Julio Mateo: 0-0, 0.00 in 2.0 IP, 1 hit, 1/0 K/BB
RHP Rafael Soriano: 0-0, 1.69 ERA in 5.1 IP, 1 run (1 ER), 6 hits, 3/1 K/BB

The only thing that happened since last note was the brief appearance of Julio Mateo, who struck out the only batter he faced. Stats are current, by the way.

The PRWL has moved on to the finals, but no Mariners players have contributed to this point. The stats only go up to the 12th, though, so it's possible someone (probably Rene Rivera again) has seen some playing time since then.
