Fresno 7 (SF), Tacoma 11
LHP Bryan Ward (5.40) didn’t exactly do too well in his four innings, giving up four earned runs on eight hits (HR) and a walk with three strikeouts. RHP Jared Hoerman (5.12) went the next three innings, giving up a hit and striking out one, while LHP Randy Williams (3.09) got the same results out of a single inning. Newcomer/indie league fodder RHP Bill Simas (0.00, W) got the win with an uneventful inning of relief. 1B A.J. Zapp (2B, 2 HR, 3 R, 9 RBI, .296) had an incredible 5-5 performance, including a walk-off grand slam, and has hits in the past eight at-bats. LF Mickey Lopez (2 R, RBI, .293) also had three hits, while CF Jeremy Reed (2 R, SB, .313) had two with a walk. RHP Jeff Harris or LHP Bill Pulsipher tomorrow.

San Antonio 6, Tulsa 4 (COL) (thirteen innings)
RHP Felix Hernandez (3.97), who is finally getting challenged from time to time, went seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits, a hit batter (ouch!), and two walks against eight strikeouts. RHP Emiliano Fruto (5.69) went for one-third of an inning, giving up a hit and a free pass, and then LHP Tim Rall (4.68) gave up a walk. When RHP Rick Guttormson (3.39) came in and gave up a hit, it scored both of Fruto’s runners, but that was the only hit he allowed, as he struck out three over the next inning and two-thirds. LHP Jared Thomas (3.44, W) did every bit of his part to earn the win, ringing up eight of the nine batters he faced. RHP Renee Cortez (4.50, W) would get the save after a hit in the thirteenth. 3B Hunter Brown (2 R, 2 SB, .284) had three hits, and 1B John Lindsey (HR 3 RBI, .289) had two. After all the rainouts, I have no idea who’s pitching tomorrow, but the paper says RHP Rich Dorman.

Inland Empire 6, Modesto 13 (OAK)
Ouch. Well, RHP Rett Johnson (3.00, L) did start this one, and he went four innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks with three more punchouts. RHP Greg Wear (9.62) went next, which proved to be a bad thing, as he gave up six runs in two-thirds of an inning after four hits, a hit batter, a wild pitch, and two walks. Only one of those runs can be credited to RHP Mike Steele (5.64), though Steele would give up three of his own on four hits, two wild pitches, and two walks against three strikeouts in the next two and a third innings. LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.52) gave up a run on two hits and struck out one in the ninth. 2B Juan Gonzalez (2B, 3B, R, 2 RBI, CS, .300) had three hits on the night and was a home run shy of the cycle, while CF Gary Harris (2 R, .279) and RF Carlos Arroyo (2B, .322) had two. 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, R, 3 RBI, .294) got some good mileage out of his double as well. I'd say LHP Bobby Livingston tomorrow, but it seems he, Pizarro, and Nelson are serving suspensions for a brawl in High Desert, so it looks like LHP Troy Cate may be starting tomorrow.

Lansing 14 (CHC), Wisconsin 2
This has not been a good series for the T-Rats. LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.86, L) gave up four earned runs on four hits, a wild pitch, and six walks against five strikeouts in his six innings. RHP Chad Fillinger (9.82) went the next five outs, giving up an earned run on four hits with a strikeout, though that earned run came after LHP Casey Abrams (11.01) entered the game. Abrams, in his usual fashion would go one inning and give up three earned runs on five hits (HR) and a walk with one strikeout, before RHP Kenly Chang (5.22) got the 27th out on a swinging strike to put the game out of its misery. 3B Chris Collins (.251), C Justin Ruchti (.224), and SS Francisco Gerez (R, RBI, 3 E, .385) all had two hits, and CF Josh Womack (2B, RBI, .259) doubled. LHP Ryan Feierabend tomorrow, hopefully.

Salem-Keizer 1 (SF), Everett 6
Dominance, thy name is LHP Shawn Nottingham (2.81, W). The Sheriff went eight innings and allowed a run on four hits, a hit batter, and a walk, while punching out twelve. To add some perspective on this, he has nine wins (the second most is six), his ERA is fourth lowest in the league, his WHIP (1.13) is fifth lowest, he’s leading the league in innings pitched (77) by 14.1, and he’s leading the league in strikeouts by ten at 75. Dayom. LHP Brandon Perry (7.40) went the final inning, giving up a hit and striking out one. On offense, SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, R, 2 RBI, .283), RF Thomas Hubbard (2B, R, .257), and 2B Oswaldo Navarro (2B, 2 R, RBI, .262) had two hits apiece, and DH Matt Tuiasosopo (2B, R, RBI, .293) doubled, AND, he didn’t strike out in any of his three other at-bats. RHP Aaron Jensen, who is one of those pitchers tied for second in wins, goes tomorrow.

(Huzzah, completed recap before midnight!)

Fresno 6 (SF), Tacoma 9
RHP Gustavo Martinez (4.46) got through six and a third and gave up five earned runs on eight hits, a hit batter, and four walks against three strikeouts. One of those runs was allowed by RHP Jared Hoerman (5.44), who finished up that inning, but not before hitting a batter and walking one. LHP Tim Christman (4.45, S) went the last two, allowing one hit and striking out three. The offense was wide awake tonight, as SS Mickey Lopez (R, 4 RBI, SB, .289), CF Jeremy Reed (R, RBI, SB, .309), and 1B A.J. Zapp (HR, 3 RBI, .289) all had three hits apiece, while LF Luis Ugueto (R, E, .269) and 2B Michael Collins (2B, 2 R, .235) both had two. LHP Bryan Ward tonight.

San Antonio was rained out, which is to be expected, considering they were playing in Wichita.

Inland Empire 0, Bakersfield 3 (TB)
RHP Juan Sandoval (4.01, L) had a strong effort wasted, as he went the complete eight innings and gave up two earned runs on six hits (HR) and a walk with six strikeouts. LF Josh Ellison (.398) had another three singles, and RF Carlos Arroyo (2B, .320) doubled. LHP Troy Cate today? Probably in some tandem with RHP Rett Johnson.

Lansing 3 (CHC), Wisconsin 2 (ten innings)
RHP Brandon Moorhead (3.34) also caught whatever bad juju Sandoval had, and went eight innings with two runs on eight hits, a hit batter, three walks, and seven strikeouts, but didn’t figure into the decision. RHP Austin Bilke (3.98, L) did, and gave up an unearned run on a hit and a walk with a strikeout in the last two. DH Nick Orlandos (2B, R, RBI, .313) continues to hit with three in the game, 2B Eric Blakeley (SB, .294) had two, but there wasn’t much else from the offense. I miss Balentien. LHP Jason Mackintosh today.

Scottsdale Giants 5, Peoria Mariners 3
RHP Oliver Arias (5.90) pitch well enough, going six innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits (HR) and a walk with three strikeouts. RHP Ryan Leaist (3.86) was downright horrible next, getting one out, balking, and giving up three walks. Surprisingly, he didn’t give up any runs, in part due to the pitching of LHP Adam Brandt (3.12, L). However, Brandt couldn’t save himself from trouble, and ended up allowing and earned run on a hit and a walk with four strikeouts over the last two and two-thirds innings. SS Jeff Dominguez (R, E, .237) had two base hits, but no Mariner had an extra-base hit in this game. Peoria has the day off today.

This is my 400th post. Wow.

Tacoma Rainiers: 70-53, .569, 1st in PCL North
San Antonio Missions: 56-65, (26-25, 2nd half) .463 (.510), 1 GB in TL West

Fresno 3 (SF), Tacoma 4
RHP Cha Seung Baek (4.05, W) had a fine outing, going six innings and allowing one run on three hits and three walks against seven strikeouts. RHP John Kelly (3.60) went for the next two and two-thirds innings and gave up a couple of runs on two hits (HR) and a walk with three strikeouts, though both those runs came in the ninth. RHP Tony Runion (1.42, S) had to come in and get the final out. LF Vince Faison (R, .269) had two hits, but 2B Mickey Lopez (2B, 2 RBI, .283), 1B A.J. Zapp (2B, .284), C Pat Borders (HR, .272), and 3B Greg Dobbs (HR, .287) had to provide the power. RHP Gustavo Martinez tomorrow.

San Antonio 3, Wichita 4 (KC) (ten innings)
RHP Juan Done (5.39) didn’t pitch that badly, giving up three runs on nine hits (HR) and three walks against a strikeout over seven and a third innings. LHP Jared Thomas (3.66) couldn’t get an out after that, giving up a hit and a walk, but RHP Aaron Taylor (3.07) dug him out of it with a strikeout along the way. The loss in extra innings went to RHP Renee Cortez (4.60, L), who gave up a run on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts overall. LF Dustin Delucchi (2B, SB, .275), 3B Hunter Brown (HR, .280), DH Jaime Bubela (R, SB, .204), and CF T.J. Bohn (HR, .261) all had two hits apiece. LHP Chris Key tomorrow.

Inland Empire 13, Bakersfield 9 (TB)
RHP Jon Huber (5.23) went five and two-thirds innings, giving up four earned runs on eleven hits (HR) and four walks with four strikeouts. LHP Melvin Pizarro (3.98) came in after that, and allowed three runs on five hits (HR) with three strikeouts. RHP Greg Wear (7.61) closed it with an uneventful ninth. As you can tell, there was a lot of note on offense. LF Jon Nelson (2B, 3 R, 2 RBI, .307) and SS Erick Monzon (3B, 2 R, RBI, .355) both had three hits, while RF Carlos Arroyo (HR, 6 RBI, .321), 1B Matt Rogelstad (2 RBI, .246), and C Rene Rivera (R, .247) logged two each. In some impressive on-base feats, 2B Juan Gonzalez (2 R, SB, .297) was 0-3 with three walks, and 3B Jesus Guzman (3 R, RBI, .296) was 1-3 with two walks. RHP Juan Sandoval tomorrow.

Lansing 1 (CHC), Wisconsin 2
RHP Bryan Stitt (4.32) did well this time around, going six innings and allowing a run on six hits (HR) and a walk while striking out ten. LHP Michael Ciccotelli (4.15, W) was perfect through the next two innings, striking out three, then RHP Mike Hrynio (2.69, S) slammed the door with a hit, a wild pitch, and a strikeout in the ninth. RF/LF Josh Womack (2B, .260) has two hits on the night, while PH/RF Chris Colton (2B, R, RBI, .243) doubled in his only at-bat. LHP Ryan Feierabend tomorrow.

Everett 5, Salem-Keizer 2 (SF)
RHP Aaron Trolia (6.86) started for the first time as a pro, going four innings keeping the Volcanoes scoreless, scattering three hits, hitting two batters, and giving out three free passes while striking out five. LHP Vance Hall (6.28, W) went the next three frames, allowing an earned run on four hits against two strikeouts. RHP Phil Cullen (2.10) walked a batter and threw a wild pitch in the eighth, and then RHP Mark Lowe (5.63, S) had an uneventful ninth. SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, 2 RBI, SB, E, .279) and 2B/1B Brandon Green (2 R, .281) both had two hits for the Aquasox. LHP Shawn Nottingham tomorrow.

Peoria Mariners 3, Arizona Royals 2
RHP Eric Carter (4.93, W) had another start where he went five innings, allowing an earned run on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts. RHP Stephen Grasley (4.03) was perfect through the next two innings, striking out four, then RHP Craig James (0.00, S) picked up the save in the last two innings, allowing two hits and a walk as he struck out one. LF Joe Jacobitz (R, .316) had four hits in the game, while 2B Jack Arroyo (R, .313), C Danny Santin (2B, .359), and 3B Pedro Ozoria (SB,E, .231) all had two hits apiece.

Fresno 1 (SF), Tacoma 3
LHP Travis Blackley (3.47, W) had his best outing since being sent down, going six and a third innings and giving up a run on three hits (HR) and four walks against eight strikeouts. LHP Randy Williams (3.13, S) pitched the rest, with two hits and two strikeouts. CF Jeremy Reed (2B, 3 RBI, .307) had three hits on the night, RF Greg Jacobs (2B, R, .304) had two, and 2B Mickey Lopez (2B, R, .287) and 1B A.J. Zapp (2B, .285) both doubled. Also of note, SS Ramon Santiago (R, .193) was pulled late in the game, and with Leone going down due to that unfortunate hand injury, this can only mean one thing… yes, we’re that much closer to getting the #2 pick. RHP Cha Seung Baek tomorrow.

San Antonio 4, Wichita 2 (KC) (seven innings)
RHP Rich Dorman (3.60, E, W) had the complete game, giving up an earned run on six hits and two walks while striking out nine. 1B John Lindsey (2 HR, 3 RBI, .288) and SS Michael Morse (HR, .268) provided more than enough offense with two hits apiece.

San Antonio 0, Wichita 7 (KC) (seven innings)
RHP Chris Buglovsky (3.51, L) had one of his worst outings of the year, giving up six earned runs on ten hits (HR), a hit batter, and five walks against two strikeouts in just four and a third innings. RHP Aaron Taylor (3.14) finished up that inning with a hit and two walks, though the run that scored was unearned. LHP Tim Rall (4.68) went in the sixth, walking one and striking out one. SS Michael Morse (2B, 3B, .276) was, again, the extent of the Missions offense. RHP Juan Done tomorrow.

Inland Empire 2, Bakersfield 4 (TB)
LHP Thom Oldham (3.27, L) had a relatively good outing, going six and a third innings and allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk against eleven strikeouts. RHP Darwin Soto (3.13) finished up that inning, but gave up a hit to score two of Oldham’s runs. RHP Mike Steele (4.95) went the last inning, allowed a hit, and struck out two. On offense, 3B Erick Monzon (.343) had three hits, 2B Juan Gonzalez (2B, .299) and DH Matt Rogelstad (R, SB, .244) had two, and C Rene Rivera (2B, .244) doubled. RHP Jon Huber tomorrow.

Lansing 12 (CHC), Wisconsin 0
Well, if you hadn’t guessed, RHP Nibaldo Acosta (4.10, L) started and got through just an inning and two-thirds before he gave up seven runs on seven hits (3 HR!!) and three walks with two strikeouts. RHP Kenly Chang (5.25) went next, two and two-thirds innings with three runs on two hits and two walks with a loen strikeout. Two of those runs scored via newcomer RHP Matt Tindell (0.00), who had a hit, two walks, and a strikeout in his five-out debut. LHP Casey Abrams (10.36) gave up a run in his two innings on four hits, a wild pitch, a walk, and a strikeout, but that’s almost to be expected. As was RHP Chad Fillinger (11.12) giving up a bomb and striking out a batter in his inning. CF Michael Nesbitt (CS, .294) logged a couple of hits, while SS Adam Jones (2B, .264) and 1B Bryan Lahair (2B, .305) both doubled. RHP Bryan Stitt tomorrow.

Everett 1, Salem-Keizer 2 (SF) (twelve innings)
RHP Jason Snyder (3.33) was stellar through six innings, giving up two hits, a hit batter, and three walks while striking out four. RHP Roman Martinez (0.00) continues to benefit from the change in scenery, giving up an unearned run on three hits versus a strikeout in his three innings. RHP Cibney Bello (4.91) came in for an out, then LHP Kendall Bergdall (6.14, L) went the next two innings, giving up the winning run on three hits and a walk against two strikeouts overall. On offense, LF Casey Craig (2B, .298) and SS/2B Oswaldo Navarro (2B, .257) both doubled, but that was pretty much it. RHP Ruben Flores tomorrow.

Mesa Cubs 4, Peoria Mariners 6
LHP Paul Fagan (4.83, W) was back to his usual tricks, going five innings and scattering four hits and three walks as he struck out six. RHP Donald Clement (3.76) went next, going two and two-thirds innings and allowing two earned runs onfour hits with two strikeouts. LHP Adam Brandt (3.07, S) walked two over the last innin and a third to get the save. 3B Jack Arroyo (2B, R, RBI, E, .300) and RF David Hall (2B, R, RBI, .308) both had a couple of hits, while DH Danny Santin (3B, 2 RBI, .358) had his second triple and continues to be more than impressive. On the other side of the coin, there's PR/CF Jermaine Brock (R, RBI, SB, .237), who's struggling a bit more than I thought he would, though he was 1-1 today and I'm hoping he can get back on track. Seems like he might have missed some time with a minor injury as well.

Tacoma Rainiers: 68-53, .562, 1GB in PCL North
San Antonio Missions: 56-64, (26-24, 2nd half) .467 (.520), T-1st in TL West

Edmonton 6 (MON), Tacoma 9
RHP Jeff Harris (5.60) went just four innings and gave up five earned runs on seven hits (HR) and two walks against four strikeouts. Luckily, LHP Tim Christman (4.75, W) was able to go the next three innings, scattering four hits and striking out one. RHP Tony Runion (1.50, S) picked up after that, going two innings and allowing a hit, two walks, and striking out one. This victory was brought to you in part by a seven-run rally in the seventh, during which time 1B A.J. Zapp (HR, 4 RBI, .285), DH Ryan Christianson (HR, 2 RBI, .297), and 3B Luis Ugueto (3B, HR, 2 RBI, SB, .269) all homered, and that was a grand slam by Zapp. CF Jeremy Reed (3B, R, .296) and C Pat Borders (2B, 2 R, .270) also had two hits apiece, though everyone in the lineup had at least one. LHP Travis Blackley tonight.

San Antonio was postponed due to rain, doubleheader today, RHP Rich Dorman starting in one of them.

Inland Empire 10, High Desert 3 (MIL)
They’re just throwing RHP Rett Johnson (0.00) in wherever, but this time he went three innings, gave up two hits, threw a wild pitch, and struck out two. LHP Bobby Livingston (3.48, W) went the next five, allowing a run on five hits (HR) and a walk as he struck out two. LHP Melvin Pizarro (3.68) gave up two runs on two hits (HR) in the final inning. 2B Juan Gonzalez (2B, 2 R, .298) and 1B Matt Hagen (2B, R, .226) both had three hits, while SS Michael Garciaparra (2 R, RBI, .215), LF Jon Nelson (2 RBI, .304), RF Carlos Arroyo (.322), and DH Erick Monzon (2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .327) had two each. 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, R, .295) also doubled. LHP Thom Oldham tonight.

Midwest League had the day off, so RHP Nibaldo Acosta tonight.

Everett 6, Salem-Keizer 2 (SF)
RHP Mumba Rivera (3.64, W) got through six innings in his second start, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks against five strikeouts. RHP Terry Forbes (2.35) went next and went two innings with two hits, a walk, and a couple of strikeouts. RHP Cibney Bello (4.97) went the final inning and gave up a hit. On offense, LF Casey Craig (HR, SB, .301), 2B Asdrubal Cabrera (HR, .280), and C Omar Falcon (HR, 2 RBI, .256) each hit their fifth home run during the game. RHP Jason Snyder tonight.

Phoenix Athletics 8, Peoria Mariners 0
RHP Jon Lockwood (7.24, L) went only three and a third innings, giving up five earned runs on five hits (HR), a hit batter, a wild pitch, and four walks against three strikeouts. RHP Tyrone Lamont (3.52) went next and turned in the best performance of the game, going three and two-thirds innings and allowing a run on three hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against five strikeouts. RHP Ryan Leaist (4.00) pitched the last two and gave up a run on a hit. Not much for the offense; LF Joe Jacobitz (2B, .299) doubled and SS Jeff Dominguez (.232) had two hits, but that was pretty much the extent of it.

Tacoma Rainiers: 67-53, .558, 1.5 GB in PCL North
San Antonio Missions: 55-63, (25-23, 2nd half) .466 (.521), 1st in TL West

Edmonton 4 (MON), Tacoma 1
RHP Gustavo Martinez (4.24, L) had some rough breaks in this one, going four and two-thirds innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits (HR) and three walks against a couple of strikeouts. RHP John Kelly (0.00) debuted next, going the next two and a third innings and allowing three hits, a walk, and striking out four. LHP Randy Williams (3.31) and RHP Tony Runion (2.25) followed with perfect innings, Runion striking out one. RF Vince Faison (HR, .250) homered, and that was the extent of the offense.

Edmonton 3 (MON), Tacoma 4
LHP Bryan Ward (4.66) went five innings and gave up all three runs on six hits and two walks as he struck out five. RHP Jared Hoerman (5.51) went the next three frames, allowing just one hit, hitting a batter, and striking out three, before LHP Randy Williams (3.26, W) came in for the final inning, giving up a hit. CF Jeremy Reed (RBI, SB, .293) had two hits, 1B A.J. Zapp (HR, .282) had a home run, DH Vince Faison (2B, .263) doubled, but it all came down to LF/1B Luis Ugueto (2 RBI, .266) singling in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. LHP Bill Pulsipher tomorrow.

Midland 7 (OAK), San Antonio 5 (twenty-one innings)
To compensate for today’s off day, the Missions played two and a third games. RHP Felix Hernandez (4.23) went five and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, a balk, and three walks against four strikeouts. To be fair, he only allowed one run on four hits and a walk until the sixth inning, and one of those runs in the sixth was an inherited runner scoring. That distinction went to RHP Renee Cortez (4.54), who went for an inning and a third, giving up three hits, a walk, and striking out one. RHP Aaron Taylor (3.21) went next, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out two in his inning of work. The next three innings went to RHP Rick Guttormson (3.49, E), who gave up a hit, hit a batter, walked another, and struck out four. Showing off some impressive durability, LHP Jared Thomas (3.66) went the next five innings, holding the Rockhounds to two hits as he rung up four. RHP Emiliano Fruto (5.43) went two innings after that, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out two. LHP Tim Rall (4.76, L0 would get the loss after three innings where he gave up two runs on three hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk as he struck out two. It’s hard to describe offense in games where players have eight to ten at-bats, but 2B Rob Gandolfo (R, SB, .223) had four hits, while SS Michael Morse (RBI, .260), LF Jaime Bubela (R, .204), RF T.J. Bohn (HR, 2 RBI, E, .264), and C Luis Oliveros (.237) had three each. RHP Rich Dorman tomorrow.

Inland Empire 9, high Desert 8 (MIL) (fourteen innings)
